NRL Grand Final out-rates the AFL
by Glenn Dyer

The NRL Grand Final won by the Melbourne Storm has out-rated the AFL Grand Final.

It was the second time in three years the NRL Grand Final has out-rated the AFL game, thanks to the presence (and eventual victory) of the Melbourne Storm in the final match of the season.

The Storm won the match played in Sydney and watched by 3.490 million people across all TV markets on the Nine Network. In Australia: 2.46 million viewers watched in the five metro markets, with 1.119 million on average watching Sydney, 650,000 in Melbourne and 535,000 watched Brisbane.

A further 1.080 million watched in regional Australia. In contrast 3.47 million people watched the AFL Grand Final in all markets: 2.704 million people watched the AFL Grand Final on the Ten Network in the five metro markets.

More than 1.42 million people watched in Melbourne, with the regional audience around the country adding a further 70,000 to the audience. In terms of the combined figure, that was better than the 3.135 million who watched the AFL match across the country last year and 3.329 million who watched in 2007.

The NRL Grand Final was the second highest in the current system of TV ratings, just behind the 3.748 million (2.422 million in the five metro markets) who watched the Storm win its second Grand Final in 2007. It’s now clear from the final series since 2005 in both codes that to get big national audiences, both codes need the presence of one out of Sydney/Melbourne Club.

The AFL’s biggest audiences were in 2005 and 2006 for the epic Sydney Swans/West Coast Eagles matches, one once by each club. The Storm have featured in the two best-viewed NRL Grand Finals, making it perhaps the best marketing prospect in Rugby League for sponsors.

I think I will stop calling AFL 'The Melbourne Competition' now as it is clearly misleading. Melbourne loves their League!

So Melbourne "loves" its league because of T.V ratings?

I know a ****load of people who only watched it because Melbourne were in it and it was late Sunday afternoon when everybody was home.

The AFL Grand Final was played between two Victorian teams with low supporter bases on a Saturday afternoon, of course its not going to out-rate the NRL one which featured Melbourne in it (as favourites too).

Wow, what a coincidence that the two highest rating audiences for AFL were the ones that featured Sydney, whereas the NRL ones were the ones that featured Melbourne.

Now I'm interested in how NRL went in terms of attendances compared to the AFL over the 2009 season?

Ah here we go.
NRL:
Attendance 3,412,872 (total)
16,979 (per match)
AFL:
Attendance 6,373,355 (total)
36,212 (per match)

Thats pretty embarrassing.

...and? They still watched it! lol

Maybe I should of been more specific; Melbourne loves their Storm/league!

Not a coincidence at all. Syd and Melb are the two biggest cities, of course when either one of them are involved in a final there are going to be more viewers than if they weren't.

whereas the NRL ones were the ones that featured Melbourne.
Both times Melbourne was playing a Sydney team (Eagles in '07 and Eels this year). This tells us that Sydney is undoubtedly the most important market in the country to attract in terms of ratings. Thats Sydney, the Rugby League stronghold.

Not embarrassing at all. It is easily explained by stadium rationalization. That is; the AFL plays all its games in Melbourne at only 2 large stadiums (Etihad and the MCG), thus drawing a larger crowd to each game.

The NRL plays many of its games in Sydney at smaller, local, suburban stadiums (CUA, Parra, Jubilee, WIN, Brookvale, Campbelltown, Leichhardt and Toyota Stadium). The lower capacity and distance from other Sydney supporters (traveling to outer suburbs in the 'big smoke' isn't easy) of these stadiums compared with Etihad and the MCG is the reason for the higher attendance the AFL recieves. The upside to these smaller grounds is they provide a level of intimacy and atmosphere that simply cannot be created in larger grounds (maybe with the exception of Suncorp).

To see the effects of stadium rationalization in the NRL you need look no further than Brisbane. The Broncos play all their home games at Suncorp Stadium (52k cap.) and have an average home crowd of 38,747 (2009).

Damn you, Storm!

We were screwed by Archer. First, he lets Turner run again after calling a tackle and the Storm score. Then, he gives a ****house penalty against Fui and the Storm grab the match winning field goal when we should had the ball and been on the attack to draw the game.

Ah, well, coming from 15th to make the GF was one hell of a ride. Gotta appreciate what life gives ya.

Cya next year, Storm.
