Does it give you the option to break them apart when you move them, or they permanently stuck together? Do they register as 2 gold in the menu when you go to buy something from an NPC?

That happens occasionally when a rented vendor falls. When the renters stuff moves into the owners moving crate anything less than 60k used to turn into gold coins stuck together like that instead of a check. Usually it was more like 20k though, I've never seen only 2 before. Either way, the devs fixed that issue a while ago so that pile is definetely rare.
Just transferred it to test to try some stuff.
It can be separated into 2 separate normal looking gold piles (the graphic for 6 or more coins), when separated they are labeled "gold coins" and weigh 25 stones each, they can be recombined into the "double stack" graphic.
Does not count as gold as far as npcs are concerned when in your pack.
Does not register as gold when in bank box and asking "balance"
