I just got banned for my guild title that I didnt choose and had actually asked to have changed. But I got banned anyways. So if you have a name or guild title that is slightly inappropriate might want to take a look at it and make sure you cant get banned.

Violation: Inappropriate Title
Shard: Legends
Character: Point and Click
Guild Title: balls deep

Really? Once again a GM shows lack of understanding; if you aren't emissary or above, you can't set titles.

Ouch!

If anyone is in any doubt about their guild title, while they can't themselves change it, they can set it not to show. I recommend doing this until the unwanted title has been changed.

AMAZING!! I had a friend who used to play UO and the guild her and her boyfriend named was deemed inappropriate. After telling them the reason the GM just changed the guild name. No banning back in the day. :sad4:

Wow....

I don't know what to say, other than "balls" arent offensive to me, even in this context.

Do I need to throw away all my 'bola balls' now? They arent bannable are they? :coco:

Sorry to hear that...

Unfortunately, it looks like the current EA policy for offensive guild titles is that you are supposed to resign immediately from the guild, or call a GM yourself to have the title removed:

http://tinyurl.com/6q3xp2

If you wait until somebody calls a GM on you, you're screwed...

Hopefully this policy can be revised - it opens a nasty way for Guild Leaders to grief their guild members.

I've been noticing a trend...I've not seen anyone banned for not being in violation of some rule or another. Now I'm not saying everyone getting banned is at fault but it does look like they are cleaning house so to speak. Could it be they want to clean up things a bit before marketing SA? Who knows, I don't agree with why some people are getting banned but I'd recommend people get pretty familiar with their rules before they get caught doing something on accident.

In this case it looks like it was a rule violation, yet at the same time not being able to change the title doesn't help. I'd have looked at a warning on a first offense so they can have an opportunity to change it if it was me but I don't have the power to make that decision...

Sorry you got banned but "balls deep"? Thats a lil blatent IMO. Even if you couldn`t change it,you definately could have chose not to display your title till it was changed.

It is a pet peeve of mine that some peaple (I know YOU didn`t) choose to affix ignorant names to their titles or even name their charectors offensive names. I do page on peaple for inappropriate names.Anyone who has kids shouldn`t hafta explain what balls deep means.I`m sure I`ll get flamed for it,but I really don`t care. Kids play this game too.

Don`t get me wrong,I`m not diss`in you for something your guildmaster set,but it IS something you had control over witht he option to display or not.

I think ppl in this world need to lighten up and stop being hippocrits. They say "OH HOW DARE HE OFFEND ME!"..."OH I HAVE BEEN OFFENDED!"

Pied Piper - your post is too long to quote. Suffice it to say that it shows deep immaturity and lack of understanding.

Fortunately not all children in the 4th grade (whats that like 10 years old?) know what "balls deep" means. And if you are supposed to be an example of what knowing these things at an early age does to a person's attitude - we dont need to say anymore about the need to ban people for offensive language.

B) Call a gm to have it removed
C) resign from the guild

You chose to keep it - you pay the consequences.

Having said that though, if i had been the gm, i warning and a suspension would have been issued.

I like how the game has stuff like arcane circles wich is a pentagram wich is a pagan or satanic symbol.

Yet something simply describing something that could be a number of things such as the depth bodies which may lay around ones person as he is slaying demons etc. is bannable.

Highly hippocritical and typical of these trying times actually :scholar:

Sorry for the long post above...thats why I like bards...describes my actually very fast thinking and moving mind which can go on and on.

Talk to me in game and you will know sir.

But again there are pentagrams in the game so it is highly hippocritical.

Since school children play pentagrams should be taken out. Pentagrams aren't allowed in school and are treated like swastikas and the confederate flag and such.

And rightly so I might at...nuff said hippocrits...

Been awhile since you were in 4th grade I see, 95 out of 100 4th graders prob know what that means, I know I did and that was 18 years ago. We have parents that don't care to thank for that ....

Sorry, it just REALLY irks me when people go around bashing pentagrams & pentacles as synonyms for satanism (and on par with swastikas? gimme a break).

From Wikipedia: Pentagrams were used symbolically in ancient Greece and Babylonia. Christians once more commonly used the pentagram to represent the five wounds of Jesus, and it also has associations within Freemasonry.

The pentagram has long been associated with the planet Venus, and the worship of the goddess Venus, or her equivalent. It is also associated with the Roman word lucifer, which was a term used for Venus as the Morning Star, associated with the bringer of light and knowledge.

From altreligion.about.com: Surprisingly, the pentagram also plays an important part in the symbology of the early United States government. The five pointed star appears in much of our early iconography - the US flag, the Great Seal, and on our currency. It is even to be found in the Capitol, where the White House sits at the apex of a giant pentagram.

Now, back to the point of this post:

This game was originally rated Mature. Now it is rated Teen. Unless they have lowered it again, little children shouldn't be playing this game.

I had a friend leave one guild and join another recently, and I wasn't able to use her old title. Apparently, with current guild titles, certain words aren't allowed. I think they were chef, mage, and smith that I tried. I find it funny that I can't use "chef smith" but someone can use "balls deep."

Ok I'm starting to have a bit of a problem with the "you broke a rule, you deserve it bla bla bla" crowd. If EA was using bots to ban people then I would totally agree with you. This is not the case.

Unless there have been some amazing advances in AI technology these are actual humans who are performing these bans. Humans with basic common sense, logic and some sense of justice, fair play and customer service. I'm not saying a HIGH sense, but they are conscious and one could assume they are at least smart enough to turn on a computer.

That being said it's ridiculous to ban someone for the above situation (accurate or not) when the guild name is so marginally offensive and the person isn't in a position to set the guild name. A rational person can see the situation and make other choices besides some robot ban based on a draconian interpretation of the rules and a desire to make people suffer.

Personally I didn't purchase the UO Masochist expansion and I don't use a product or a company in order to be treated badly, unfairly or in a uncaring way.

Peace,

That's another issue that people may run into slang in different countries since UO is an international game. What one person may not think twice about can me something drastically different to someone on the other side of the world.

I guess the part I am having trouble with is the inconsistency, not the suspensions and bannings, making it hard to understand what is acceptable and what is not.

There was a player on LS with the chracter name "Uzed Tampacks" running around about a year ago, and got no GM response on that one. If that wasn't disgusting and bannable, then I see nothing wrong with balls deep, although in poor taste.

Just be clear and consistent, please.

Please do give it a second thought! Many games occur inside this game called UO.
Many games dealing with behavior.
Among them is the naming game. Players and groups of players name themselves
for a reason, ALWAYS!
Give them an inch, they go a mile. What next? Perhaps pictures and words inside
the game of UO. What can players get away with? Have it the players way,
they would do anything and everything, after all, it is just a game and who should care?
And, please none of this we are all adults claim, some people who are adults
just do not want to be limited their behavior on UO.
Do understand that the Guild name title is indicator of the players within.
A player who obviously knows the name is in bad taste should have avoided!
Or, as you said, hide the Guild name.

ok look at these same names that are bannable on the presumption that the reader already has a derogittory mind. Kinda like the ink blot tests pschiatrists use

great balls of fire
balls of fire - both of those could be cuz the person liked the song Great Balls of Fire

Deep Throat- whom we all know was helped break the water gate scandal but mere ******* would assume other wise

Andy ****- a friggin comedian for god sakes

Heck I could come up with thousands of names and phrases if I wanted to. If the name is outright explicit then yea..but just because he uses "Balls Deep" which is a common southern term for bein in trouble etc. does it make it right cuz the mod or whatever or whomever paged is so dumb they cant understand a simple cultural difference and common phrase used among southerners.

BTW it could mean many more things than that. But i see alot of names with the word SEX and SEXUAL whatever but I'm not bein a paging ***** about it.

I have much better things to do like make this stupid most...defending sum dude I've never talked to or met.

Instead I do it because its right and instead of wasting time banning names not out right explicit. They such fix much other game balance issues probs, cheats hacks etc.

And I'm from TX. SE TX round Galveston. Coaches in middle school used alot worse words than balls deep I assure you...heck sum of the lil league coaches, coaching elem kids cursed worse than the H.S. coaches

Naming your character afters someone with any type of notoriety living or dead has technically always been a no no...

That would be like naming a character George Washington, or Winston Churchill, it falls under the same rule.

Actually a lot of recent studies are finding out that video games are good for kids as it builds problem solving skills and stimulates mental development. Some shrinks are prescribing gaming for children with ADD. So "babysitting" your kid with a game for an hour or so a day might be good for them in the long run.

simple .. don't let your 4th graders play a game revolving around murder and plunder what kind of example are you really setting for your kid?

personally i think EA/Mythic really needs to go back and change the rule's and not allow under 18 players again.

this is a prime example of why they never should have changed the 18+ rule. people can't be mature enough to handle freedom of speach.

and another thing, people saying they don't get to pick there guild tag's that is total BS every guild i have been in i have been able to request whatever title i wanted as long as the game filters didn't block it.

So I cant have the name Pied Piper then huh? Because since we been giving history lessons did you know that before the pied piper was a folk lore he was a real individual in history? Which alot of the old info was destroyed or misconstrued?

Yeah...during the black plague era or whatever in Germany ppl were doing this "manic dancing" and crap. They would all of a sudden just start moving in ways that looked like they were dancing. They used bards (sum bards sang, sum played instruments, sum did both) to calm them down.

Also, today historians think that the manic dancer plagues that swept among some parts of Europe near Germany were actually ppl that had auteism.

But the Pied Piper sum how got flipped into sum lil children story or changed up like so many things of past. When actually he was a pioneer in a way to treat the "manic dancing" that been going on.

I believe sumhow the rats got throwed into the childrens tale cuz of the bubonic plague during the period.

The Pied Piper in sum mytholigies can be a representation of the devil or a demonic figure. But in those myths hes a Satyr lookin type creature and less humanoid.

Any how come I see many famous names including Jack Black etc. and so forth if it a big No No?

Hanzo Hattitori!? I think he was real persons in history...theres alot

Guess alotta famous named ppl an ppl with the name sexual and sex in their names better stocks up on them char name change tokens. *grins*

Heck I've even seen sexual choclate.... I didn't page? why? better things to do than Nark on small frye insignifigant things.

Especially when mere giving a kid internet access with the best filter in the world won't stop alotta bad crap....

BTW like 75% of the ppl that play xboxlive on internet are kids and they are the very ones with the out right obscene names, tags, or mottos. The lil kids are the ones talking the crap, cursing, and saying obscene things on in game chat.

Its very disturbing to hearing a childs voice whom is male but sounds femalish because he hasn't hit puberty yet...and hes talking **** to 30 old men in a game of Halo or sumin...then again its kinda funny LOL

It's also kinda funny how I see EA wasting our money on bullcrap bans. They should stop dupers, script runners, websites selling in game items for real money, etc.

The only reason why I would see why the dev are not doing it is because some of them are making money on the side doing the cheats and exploits themselves and running the sites for profit.

Or the more logical argument could be that some of the dev teams before them created the loop holes for their own benifiet and put up the item selling and cheat selling sites.

Which means this dev team has a really huge job and Boo Boo on their hands. And need not waste their times with these piddly names that are mere SOUTHERN LINGO.

You're confusing GMs with Devs. GM's enforce rules and assist players with problems. They don't do any programming, nor make corporate decisions. Also, selling in game items for RL money isn't against the rules, and never has been.

The only reason why I would see why the dev are not doing it is because some of them are making money on the side doing the cheats and exploits themselves and running the sites for profit.
This is one of the most ignorant statements I've ever seen on Stratics, not to mention ludicrous.

There are a lot of words that are common "lingo". Just because they are doesn't make them any more right as far as game rules go.

This actually surprises me alot. I have been close to two people in this situation, and in both cases it was the GM OF THE GUILD that got pulled and warned, not the player. Even as an emmy, you cannot set your own title, so there is no viable way to hold the person with the title at fault. I would point this out when disputing the suspention/ban (I assume you will be doing so).

A funny side note: my husband's current guild title is "Removed by EA Staff" because someone paged on his original title and that is what the GM replaced it with after pulling our GM to jail to discuss it.

This is my impression as well. It seems they are sticking to the letter of the law, and if a player is found breaking any rule, however minor or questionable it may be, they're getting hit for it.
I am noticing a different, more disturbing trend. GM's that are not familiar with the UO game mechanics. Even if Omni was an Emmisary, he could not set his own guild title. Only a DIFFERENT Emmy or the Guild Master can do that.

As I said above, every other time I have heard of such a situation (once I was with the Guild Master when it happened, the second time it was in reference to my husband's title), it was the GUILD MASTER, not the person with the title, that was pulled to jail and talked to. And in neither case were they suspended or banned. Both times the Guild Master was warned, had a mark put on their account, and the offensive name was removed.

Moral of the story: Name your character Bob, Jim, Sally, or Sue and don't talk in-game at all. Talk pnly through ICQ/AIM/UOAM or Vent/TS

That is the only way to stay safe since the Customer Service staff has decided that no one is allowed to have fun anymore.

These are the steps you follow huh? Since you are always on here with negitivity and complaints!
Please, take it to icq, aim, TS and/or Vent!

I'm a little worried about my fisherman (Pirate) now.

His guild title says "Cap'n of the Filthy *****," the ship from the movie Cabin Boy.

Sounds like some people are ban happy.

this is a prime example of why they never should have changed the 18+ rule. people can't be mature enough to handle freedom of speech.
1) There is no freedom of speech on the internet, there's only privilege of speech. If you step over the line, or are perceived to step over the line, that privilege may be taken away.

2) Innuendo's are innuendo's. They're called that because they can be taken one way or another, such is the case here. Generally it's meant to be funny. But lately, it's been meant as a way to see how far you can push the envelope.

3) The OP said he asked for the title to be changed. Yet he did nothing to hide it. By asking for the title to be changed, he acknowledges, in some form or another, that he knew the name was not right. Whether he just didn't like it himself, or otherwise. But this falls under the personal responsibility section of the game as much as it does anything else. The OP should have taken personal responsibility for the name, by hiding his guild title and not allowing it to be seen, or leaving the guild. I know this seems like he's punishing himself to get the situation fixed, but what would have been better in the circumstances? Hiding a guild title, or getting banned?

The situation could have been avoided. Now we can blame the EA GM's all we like, but the FACT is that we all KNOW what the rules are. Why are we blaming them for enforcing them???? It doesn't matter how LAME people think it is! Rules are rules people! You all understand this! So why fight it? We ALL agreed to the rules when we signed up. We agreed they were fine, and we understood them, and we would follow them. Now people are getting upset that they're enforcing them! PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY!!!!!

Ea cracking down on all kinds of stuff=good for the game. EA not posting said crackdown on the main log in screen=SURPRISE to the player.

It is one thing to have rules. It is another NOT to enforce those rules for the most part, and quit another to say, "OK, we will enforce them now, and not tell any one?

All they have to do is post some examples of rules, and things happening lately that can get you banned.

the banning for a name (or guild name in this case) is such a random and inconsistant act that it rarelly if ever is raised.

i played with my characters named 'Poo' for years then one day caught a name change from a GM because of the name.
and we are talking years here.

did it suck.
yup.

at the end of the day we are playing EA's game.
so if they decide to gather up all their toys and go home, well, there is nothing we can do.

what are the chances that anyone else is gonna catch a ban for this?
all depends on if someone reports you and if the GM is in a anal mood.

ive seen titles and names and have more then a few myself that are easilly bannable, yet nothing has ever been done about it.

all the planets and moons have to line up just right to catch a ban for this im thinking.
and really, with so few people playing the game now a days even running INTO someone in game is a rare event (hehe)

now here is something to think about.
what with all the bans for innocent people buying (unknown) duped items and now bans for names and guild titles.... heck we run the very real possibility of having the only church approved game here soon!

WWJD?
well hell, he'd play UO!

ya know.
now that i think about it, there was a guild on sonoma called PORN for a long time.
big guild too.
and i know for a fact that people use to report them all the time.
nothing.
granted it would have been neat to see the guild title 'balls deep' with the old PORN tag flying, hehehe.

lol Talking of guild tags ... on Napa we currently have: MUFF and KOK Sometimes they play/raid together ... nothing like hearing in vent "We have some MUFF and KOK coming thru the drop down!"

the phrase in question is not exactly that of a SEXUAL REFERENCE.

if you were walking around a swamp with water up to your waist, you could say "i am balls deep in water." though referencing a private part on your body, i would not say that it is in fact a sexual reference in the way that deep throat is a sexual reference.

im on the fence here, i do believe however, that should not have been his title. he could have in fact used "waist deep" or "knee deep."

You should probably have included the guild name so we could all get a better idea of why it was inappropriate. It looks like another member of the guild also had their title removed by EA.
