January 2011 Best Shot in the Realm Results

The Best Shot in the Realm, a free archery contest for all of the citizens of Baja was originally hosted by the Society of Archers guild with Theoran as Master of Ceremonies. Now the BSR is going into it's third year sponsored by the Misfits of Society guild with Toni Fierce as the GM. This monthly held contest at the Skara Brae fairgrounds offers an opportunity for Baja's greatest archers to lay their claim to monthly champion, earn an engraved bow, a million in gold, and garner a spot in next years Champion of Champions Shoot-off for the year of 2011.

This years start was held in late January just following the Champions Shoot-off and found 18 archers each attempting to put their names in the annals of Baja's greatest archers. A round robin tournament with increasingly higher scores for each round whithers away contestants at each level until a monthly champion is crowned. This months contest lasted an unheard of 7 rounds and brought cheers, hoots and hollers from many of the archers and spectators.

Round 1 where 70 points is required to move onward is usually merely a tune-up for many seasoned competitors but tonight saw a few new shooters who fell by the wayside early with Lysdexic, Sally (encouraged to shoot by the crowd) and Jocasta failing to score the required 70 points. Lil Debi and Howard Hill showed they were ready with early Robin Hoods (RHs) which is accomplished when a 2nd or 3rd arrow actually splits the shaft of an earlier shot accompanied by a unique wood splitting sound of cheeeched!

Round 2 found Allie Koholic posting a RH with Ithaca and Happy Fool failing to score the required 100 points while 8 other archers merely posted three bulls-eyes.

Round 3 is a measuring round for many shooters where 150 points is needed to continue on for the night and only three perfect bulls-eyes will move you onward, This round is where the dreaded inner ring shot, a 10 point shot, is the bane of many shooters and just missing the bulls-eye by a small bit will send you to spectator status. This round saw RawHeadRex, Llama, Nightstalker, Richard Lionhart and Drax all failing to score 150 points with AllieKoholic, Norritt, Sanarr and Ahebban posting RHs, Ahebbans coming combined with an inner ring shot to save him for another round. Noted shooters so far were Cherokee, Lil Debi, Howard Hill and Sanarr who have not yet missed a bulls-eye thru three rounds.

Round 4, normally the deciding round where 2 bulls-eyes and a RH will give you the 200 points and usually the monthly crown, saw eight talented shooters missing their marks and a shoot-off was called for by Toni.

Round 5 was started with the shooters lining up one at a time with cheers and hoots coming from the crowd as many cheered on their favorite archer. A five-shot total would determine 2011s 1st monthly winner and Ahebban was the 1st one to approach the buttes, but his 170 total would surely not win this nights contest. Next up was AllieKoholik and then Norritt who both had double RHs and 260 scores, and the nights bar level was set. Cherokee later matched this feat and three shooters were tied for round 6. Other notables were Lil Debi and Sanarr with 250s.

Round 6 saw Norritt and Allie Koholik again tying with 170s while Cherokee finally took a seat with a 130. The crowd realized now that the pressure was on.

Round 7 and an unheard of before marathon contest of BSR shooting finally crowned a Champion with Norritt ousting Allie Koholik 300 to 210. The fireworks went off and Norritt claimed his engraved bow, 1 million in gold, the title "Champion, Best Shot in the Realm, January 2011" and the first reserved seat in the next year's Champion event.

The Misfits of Society would like to invite all the archers of the land to the next Best Shot in the Realm, which will be held on Saturday, February 26th at the Skara Brae Fairgrounds at 8:30 pm pst (10:30 central, 11:30 est). We hope to see you there and until then, Bows up!
