Lord Brittish had a somewhat skewed, very idealistic view of what the game would become. He just overestimated the people that would be attracted to it.
Instead of attracting die hard role playing fans that believed in honor and integrity, UO attracted pkers that would easily destroy other's game play in a system that offered very little pentalty.
Its not unlike the real world where most people weigh risk versus reward and if the risk is less then the reward then the person will gladly accept the risk. In a system with little or no risk the risk is going to be taken by a greater number of people.

I disagree.
The problem was boredom. There was so much to do, but once you'd done it all you were left a little bored. Often, turning PK was the last phase in a players evolution shortly before quitting the game....the last uncharted territory to explore. Turned out, some people ended up liking it so much they kept doing it.
EQ, WoW....these games keep moving back the finish line so there's always something to focus on besides your state in the game. Had UO had as much as it does now back then, that evolution would have taken much longer.
