(Question) Help with hunting...

I wonder if someone can make some suggestions to help me. I know this game has no levels, so there is less of a 'get to level x and hunt y' sort of way of doing things. Also there don't seem to be many quests, usually games have quests that tell you to 'go to this place and kill 10 of that'. I did the quests in New Haven already, but the quests seem to just stop after that.
I am a little confused as to where I should go as I progress towards GM in my skills. I know when I start in Haven I kill the undead in Old Haven, then I found some Ettins to kill and a dungeon nearby with Earth ellies in, but what do I do next? There are some Ogre Lords in the Earth Ellie dungeon but they are way too tough for me and I died there.
Can someone please list what order I should do dungeons or other places?
Any help is greatly appreciated as I don't have a clue!
Thanks.

Thank you very much for the info, I will look into both those suggestions, there are three of us playing together so hopefully we can do something this evening. :)

Unfortunately when they change and 'improve'? the game things slowly get harder for new players. It used to be that after Haven you could go to Despise and upstairs improve your skills fighting Lizard Men, then use the middle level inhabited by Earth Elementals and finally the bottom level where you could end up finally honing your skills on Ogre Lords at the centre locations. Another training location (which still exists) is the Solens in the tunnels outside Wind.

Despise is no longer much use to new players.

Yes I agree, it does seem that things are being changed for the majority of the player-base, I assume most players are at the so-called 'end-game' level now. Someone told me a few days ago that Despise used to be the place for newer players but it was changed and is too difficult for new/unskilled players now. Obviously the majority of players need new dungeons to keep the game fun but what I don't understand is why they changed an existing dungeon, why did they not just make a new dungeon for players of higher skill?

Game is very easy for new players now days.

1. With EC client and Pinco's UI you have an excellent game knowledge base.
This include locations/cities/dungeons maps, monsters resistances, resources description, spell descriptions, etc.

2. You can easily earn starting gold.
You can do escorts in New Heavens - 500 gp every 5 minutes.
You can buy cloth, cut it to bandages (1 bolt = 50 bandages = 100-110gp) and sell them to healers/veterinarians 5-10gp each. So you double-triple-quadro you money with one deal.
You can buy shafts (3-5gp), feathers (5-10gp), craft arrows (no time or skill required) and sell arrows to other players per 20-25gp in General chart.

3. You needn't much resources to train skills.
You can get 100 LRC suit for 5k or even free.

4. You needn't much time to train skills.
When you buy new account you get New Players Ticket that gives you SOA effect for all skill for real week.

5. 50 in each skill you've selected for yourself usually is enough to start earn good money in wild/dungeons.
There are good places to earn gold in Ter Mur almost for any level characters. You can farm imbuing ingredients and sell it to other players.
There are good places to farm (gold, resources) in other facets as well.

Ultima Online is more of a Sandbox than the MMOs that followed it; you make your own quests, your own targets for in game achievement. Do you want to take revenge on those Ogre Lords? There's your next quest. Or maybe you want to see how far you can get into other dungeons. Or perhaps you want a break from hunting, and it's time to develop a crafting character, but now that character needs leather so you go with your friends back to the lower spawns and kill them for leather. Or you decide it's time to all get a house together so you pool gold and...

It can be a bit confusing, as over a decade of games since have gone for the tightly structured quest design. There's also not as many "Crikey!" moments visually in UO, simply due to the game's age; you'll never be obviously rewarded for doing something. It's more of progression, a slow, growth. Think of it like Minecraft more than Warcraft.

Use Stratics as mentioned here. UOGuide too. There's a new EM apparently, try and get to their events and meet wider community. Discover what is out there, and then see if you can get there!

Thanks for all the replies, I will try and explore more, unfortunately I am a crafter/mage and my magery is very low. I do have a paladin but she also has low skills. I need to spend more time training skills.
Can someone please point me in the direction of some decent player shops? My husband has been looking to buy a Tactics scroll, but so far most of the shops that have any scrolls don't have a Tactics one.
A lot of the shops we have found are pretty empty or just full of bulk order books. :(

The devs are working on a world wide auction house, so that will soon not be an issue; when the game first went live, it was a different era and there were so many more of us, so searching the wilderness and meeting new people was part of the appeal, but times change alas... in the meantime don't hesitate to use General Chat to just ask anyone listening if they have what you want to buy. Also most of the active shops will still be around Luna too.

Don't worry about training skills as such, they'll rise as you go adventuring; if you power up too quickly you'll miss a lot of the older content and burn out much faster. For instance those evil Ogres will just seem pathetic pretty quickly if you cap skills. Of course it will mean you won't be doing much with the majority of us who can just plough through them, but at the same time it seems you have a husband to share the adventure with, so this won't be an issue for you perhaps!

Later on you may want to separate out your crafting and Magery, as there's a lot of crafting skills to learn (I've actually got 2 characters who "stay at home" as it were) but for now just keep growing and seeing where it takes you!

Thanks Adol, I totally agree with you about taking things slowly, I am not a power-leveller by any means, I do prefer to do things at my own pace and learn as I go along.
My exploring usually ends with me running away from something dangerous very fast, but hey it's all very amusing later after you realise you are still alive! :p
I will get my husband to shout in general chat, I am sure someone must have what he needs, thanks again for all the good advice everyone. ;)
