Apparently, a lot of people still think you have to connect the 4 spigots in the fountain to all 4 of the drains.

In fact, you can connect 2, sometimes even 3, of them to one drain. I usually only use 2 drains, 3 very rarely. The only down-side is that once you complete the two to one, you can't access anything inside it (though your pets can climb over, and you can cast spells inside it), so you lose access to canals that drop inside.

Look at this pic of a successful solo fountain. The 2 East-facing spigots are connected to the east drain, one of the south spigots to the south drain, and the other south one to the west drain (which was relatively close, just north of the corner close in). I could have just as easily connected the middle two spigots to the same drain, but didn't want to create the congestion.

Not true. You can use an axe to chop it. It won't cause the canals to leak or for you to lose progress.

This also helps if you're in a big group and there are so many canal pieces on the floor that you can't pick them up or use them fast enough before more spawn pop up. You can assign someone to just going around and axing all of the unneeded corner pieces.
