Dear Taylor, please consider put a limit on post size.

There seems to be a trend lately of people posting long and rambling missives mostly about nothing. Some even get into a point-by-point discussion that means nothing more than "I am right and you are wrong." More people seem to be taking up this habit.

This is a forum for discussion of ideas, not a blog for long, long dissertations. These endless posts mean that most of us just skip the discussion and whatever was said is lost. I wish people would get to the point, and if they need more room to bloviate they should get a Stratics Plus account with their own blog.

Sincerely,

Winter

People will always find a way to ramble, whether they do it in one post or break it into multiple posts, I'm afraid. It's a good suggestion, but it won't solve the underlying frustration you feel.

There's always the "ignore" option if you find some posters especially grating!

Lmao. Mrs. Manners has issues with fellow posters typing in too many words? On a public forum?
That's too funny.
I am nostalgic for long dissertations even though I cant handle them.
So I say they should stay and we should never put a limit on post length.

I can point you to several posts that you have to scroll through several pages of rambling thoughts, over a 1,000 words in each. It is not a problem with attention span, rather that the poster can't seem to organize their thoughts into something that makes sense. Honestly, they aren't worth reading in the first place.

You know what else doesn't make sense?
Buying a home in Felucca for nostalgic purposes but being unable to have enough old school common sense to avoid one pk before you even get inside the front door. Seriously?
Nostalgia would infer that you played way back when or have been playing since way back when so one pk would be absolutely no issue at all since you infer that you are a vet.
But what do I know lol?

Here's a solution to your problem, then: don't read them.

Don't ask for some arbitary post length limitation across the entire site which acts as a restriction for literally everyone. Besides, they don't work anyway. People will still post that they want. They'll just use their limit in their first post and then continue it in a post below.

This is a problem that can already be solved on a per-user basis by simply skipping over those posts or using "ignore." Actual "ignore" features are pretty silly, imo, since you could miss out on some pertinent points which others reply to, thus making the thread kinda not make sense or look fragmented. It's there if you want it though, I guess. :p

This strategy works well for me.

I'll admit that there are some posters (for certain subjects) that I skip, because I am not in the mood to hear their "Soap Box Sermon".

;)There even some posters *cough* @Taylor *cough* which I just skip over entirely, regardless of the topic. :p

I don't read them. Like I don't read most of your posts either. I don't put people on ignore, but I do skip through both the offensive posters and the posters who post nothing more than soap-box sermons (to borrow from BG) that only say "I am smarter than you."

But you are right, they aren't worth reading anyway. Just get to the point - how hard is that?

How about this as an alternative - is there a way to show only summary of the beginning the posting? What I mean is that my website software allows me to set a maximum length to show in the posting, and then you can click on "MORE" to see the rest of the post. That way the forum flows more smoothly than having to page past a single post in a thread.

No, that's not an option included in XenForo.

I think of this as Zogging a thread. It's kinda like Zerging in game.

I really want suggestions for how we can improve our user experience. Many of these get implemented over time--most recently, the change to the stream alert. This particular suggestion, though, I cannot implement in good conscious. Sorry!

hmm
About an hour ago a beta player who changed shards to another of mine was at luna bank asking when and if people played everyday.
I explained each shard does have a "busy" time of day and like flowers waiting for the sun they all seem to come out of the woodworks during that time.
He questions of some things he needed done and if I know some information when a second player entered the bank area and added his 2 cents about EA messing it up... I directed him to look on stratics and that EA no longer ran our game.. Both had not used stratics!
Perhaps Taylor if a small wisper in Mesanna's ear might help in that... I was thinking along the line of a plaque in Luna and Haven giving the Stratics link for new and returning players who have never used the forum. And perhaps a tutorial at the opening of the account to give a small overview of how to operate Stratics forum in youtube?

I love anything that benefits Stratics. That's why I've been volunteering and donating to the site for so many years. Still, I'm hesitant to ask for any special treatment, since there are so many hard-working fansites. But I'd be happy to do some type of tutorial. I'd also exchange ad space for ad space, as I can offer 1.3 million monthly impressions in exchange, including non-DAoC players, free illegal shard players, etc. I've offered all our resources to support UO the last couple times I was privileged to have lunch with @Mesanna. We're here not as a business, but as a medium to support UO and the community as best we can with our limited resources.

Did you see we launched new social pages for guilds and townships today? I hope this helps further support player communities!

Yawn. If you can't make it through a detailed discussion, then don't read it. How about we call that Arrothing?

When someone sent me the link to this thread, I immediately had an idea who posted it.
