Dart Trap Help - Go Off but Stay Locked?

I know how to make traps, which way they have to face and so on. However, all of my trap crates open when they are triggered. Quite often I loot some that will go off but remain locked. How do you do this?

I make my boxes with a gm carptenter/tinker.
I trap my boxes with a 30 skill tinker.
I unlock my boxes with a gm mage or gm lockpicker.

What is the secret?
