Welcome to Pallhaldir’s “Beginners Guide to Gardening”, with help from my pet fish.

In this guide I will walk you through the steps of getting the necessary items to garden, and then growing them. I will stop right before the pollination/cross pollination section, as that’s for another guide.

What you need to begin gardening in the world of Ultima Online:

  1. A Plant Bowl: Purchasable from any provisionar for 2gp.
  2. Dirt (Found all across the world) You can also use fertile dirt in hopes of gaining an extra growth. It takes 40 fertile dirt to fill a single bowl. Some gardeners believe it to be a waste of resources, but that’s purely up to the gardener.
  3. Water (best thing is a water pitcher and a water trough placed near your growing area to refill your pitcher)
  4. And most importantly, SEEDS. Seeds can be gathered from Boglings (1 seed) and Bog Things (2 seeds), found in nearly any swamp. These seeds will only produce 1st generation plants, which include: Campions, Ferns, and Tribarrel Cacti. Also you will only receive Dull Red, Dull Yellow, Dull Blue, and Plain colored seeds from these. To get the other types or mutant seeds you’ll need to cross pollinate (another Guide) or buy from a player ran vendor. To get Rare colored seeds you’ll need to do the naturalist quest (again, another guide
    )
  5. Ultima Online: Samurai Empire Bonsai Seeds. To receive these you need to kill nearly any creature that spawns on the Tokuno Islands. By doing this you have a chance to receive a Common, Uncommon, Rare, Exceptional, or Exotic. All Five of these seeds look like normal plain seeds.

(You will need greater heal, greater cure, greater poison, and greater strength potions later, but we’ll get into that once we’re growing actual plants
)

The different types of seeds:
[*]Original 4 colors acquired by killing Boglings and Bog Things:
  1. Plain:
  2. Dull Blue:
  3. Dull Red:
  4. Dull Yellow:
[*]The 6 colors produced by cross pollination:
  1. Dull Green:
  2. Dull Orange:
  3. Bright Blue:
  4. Bright Yellow:
  5. Bright Red:
  6. Bright Purple:
[*]The 2 types of mutants produced by cross pollination:
  1. Black:
  2. White:
[*]The 4 types of Rare seeds acquired during the Naturalist quest:
  1. Rare Pink:
  2. Rare Magenta:
  3. Rare Aqua:
  4. Rare Fire Red or sometimes called “Blaze”:
[*]The 5 types of UO: Samurai Empire Seeds
  1. All 5 seeds have the same graphic as a plain seed but are labeled differantly:

Now, to plant your seeds.

  1. First thing’s first. Before you can plant seeds you need dirt in your bowl. To do this, double-click your plant bowl and target any patch of dirt in the world. This will turn your plant bowl into a Bowl of Hard Dirt. (Dirt patches that are added on houses with house customization will not work
    )
  2. Ok now that you have a plant bowl full of dirt, it’s time to make sure your dirt is soft enough for your seeds to grow in. To add water to your bowl of dirt simply double-click a pitcher of water and target your bowl of dirt. You want to do this twice, so you will now have a Bowl of Soft Dirt.

If you add to much water to your bowl of dirt you will end up with a Bowl of Squishy Dirt. Even more water will turn it into a Bowl of Sopping Wet Dirt. If you add to much water your plant menu (double clicking the bowl of dirt) will have a red + next to the water pitcher icon.

If this happens you can dump the dirt from the bowl and try again. To do this open your plant menu, click the empty bowl icon in the bottom right and then click the Check mark to dump your dirt and start over.
  3. Now to plant. Double click the seed you wish to put in the bowl, and click on the bowl of soft dirt. Your seed is now planted. You will need to check the plant daily and make sure it has water and potions to survive.

Growth checks are made at server up if the plant is locked down in a house. If it is in your bag or bank it is made 23 hours after planting it.

Ok, let’s go over the plant gump before we get into the upkeep of the plant.

This is what your gump will look like after you plant your seed:

The Left Side

  1. Notice in the upper left hand corner of the gump there is a number one. This number ranges from 1 through 9. These are the amount of days the seed has been growing. Since our example plant has a number 1 it is only the first day that the plant has been growing.
  2. The next icon below the number looks like a lily pad with a flower on it. This icon will take you to the reproduction gump. In this gump, you can pollinate plants, remove resources and seeds if any are available. The “lettuce bowl” icon in the upper left will take you back to the main plant gump.
  3. The next icon down is the Infestation Icon. This icon will indicate whether or not your plant is infested with nasty bugs.
  4. The next icon is the Fungus Icon. This, just like the infestation icon, indicates whether or not your plant has a fungus problem.
  5. The next icon is the Poison Icon. This Icon lets you know if you have poisoned your plant with to many poison potions.
  6. The next icon is the Disease Icon. This Icon lets you know if you have added to many cure potions to your plant and caused a disease.
  7. The last Icon on this side is the Codex of Wisdom link. Clicking this Icon will open the Codex of Wisdom up to the plant care section

The Bottom

  1. There is only one thing on the bottom to look at. This is the plants health section. This section can be one of four different stages:

[*]Vibrant
[*]Healthy
[*]Wilted
[*]Dying

The Right Side

  1. The First icon is the growth meter Icon. This icon is blank in our example, but will have different symbols during growth depending on if it grew or not. These symbols are:

•A Red !: This means the plant did not grow because it was not locked down in a house or placed in your backpack
•A Red -: This means the plant did not grow because it was either Wilting or Dying.
•A Yellow -: This means the plant did not grow because it has not been at least 23 hours since it last had a growth check
•A blue +: This means nothing is wrong and your plant grew successfully.
•A Green +: This means nothing is wrong and your plant grew, but it received a bonus growth check for being in fertile dirt.
  2. The next icon on the right side is the watering icon. This icon allows you to water the plant by clicking the icon and then clicking a water pitcher.
  3. The next four Icons are icons of potions, in order,
    poison,
    cure,
    heal and
strength. The ones in our example all have a 0 next to them, but these numbers will increase depending on the amount of each specific potion you put on the plant. Example being: If you add one poison potion to the plant, the number next to the poison potion will be a 1.
  4. The last icon is the empty bowl icon. This icon allows you to dump your plant and start fresh. If you dump your bowl while the plant is in its first stages of growth (seed or sapling) you will get your seed back. But if you didn’t have a seed in the bowl or the plant has passed the sapling stages you will not receive a seed back.

Plant Upkeep and Growth

First Part of Upkeep---Watering

When you first open your plant gump on the second day, and each day after, of growth you may see a symbol next to your water icon. To water the plant click the water icon and select a pitcher of water. The symbols that will show up are:

[*]No Symbol: This means the plant does not require any water this day.
[*]A Yellow - : This means the plant will need one water.
[*]A Red -: This means the plant will need 2 waters.
[*]A Yellow +: This means that the plant was given 1 too many waters and will not require anymore.
[*]A Red +: This means the plant was given 2 or more too many waters and, again, will not require anymore.

Second Part of Upkeep---Potions

What potions can be used in plant upkeep?

The only potions you can use in upkeep are Greater Potions:

[*]Greater Heal Potions
[*]Greater Cure Potions
[*]Greater Poison Potions
[*]Greater Strength Potions

For the Potion part of upkeep, you’ll use the 4 icons below the reproduction icon. These are the Infestation, Fungus, Poison, and Disease Icons. During upkeep, when you open your plant gump any of these four icons can have symbol next to them. They all might have a symbol, some or none. Depending on which ones have a symbol and what the symbol is you’ll need to add a potion that corresponds with the current problem.

The Symbols for the Potion upkeep are similar to the watering ones. Here’s what you will see when looking at the plant gump:

[*]No Symbol: This means the plant does not need a potion that corresponds with that problem.
[*]A Yellow +: This means the plant will need one potion that corresponds with that problem.
[*]A Red +: This means the plant will need two potions that corresponds with that problem.

What potions to use for a certain problem:

The developers were nice enough to set up the plant gump to practically tell you which potions to use when. By this I mean most of the plant “problems” are set directly across from the potions that they need. The Only one that isn’t this way is the Disease icon. If your plant is diseased, you will need to give it a Heal potion.

Check out the screenshot below, The arrows point from the problem to it’s corresponding potion:

What about Strength Potions?

The purpose of strength potions is to help the plant resist infestations and fungi growth. It is purely up to the gardener whether or not he wishes to use strength potions. I’ve heard arguments on both sides about the usage of strength potions. Some gardeners say it’s not worth the time and money to use them, some gardeners say they see excellent results from the use of them. Again it’s completely up to you whether or not you want to use strength potions.

What if my plant isn’t Vibrant?

Each day, depending on whether you didn’t add enough potions or too many potions your plant has a chance of loosing hit points. If this happens your plant can lower in health. Also, over or under watering a plant can cause it to loose hit points. If the plant is below Vibrant you will need to add heal potions to raise it back up to vibrant.

Remember, plants gain more hit points the older they are. With this said, make sure that during the early stages of a plants life you take care to make sure that you give it the appropriate amount of water and potions.

What are the different stages of growth for my plants?

There are six different graphics that will show up on the plant gump after the initial bowl of dirt when a plant is growing. The sixth image will always be of the type of plant growing. In the example we have a campion, but if you’re growing a century plant then it’ll show a century plant. Here they are in order:

What Plants can I expect to receive when they are grown?

Well since this guide only covers up to cross-pollination, you will only receive First generation plants if you acquired them by killing Boglings/Bog Things. But if purchased from a player ran vendor, you have a chance (if seeds are not labeled) to receive any different plant from all generations. To help you know what plants are in what generation, here’s a complete listing:

Generation 1:

Campions, Ferns, Tribarrel Cactus

Generation 2:

Water Plant, Lilies

Generation 3:

Prickly Pear Cactus, Rushes, Snowdrops, Small Palm

Generation 4:

Barrel Cactus, Snake Plant, Century Plant, Ponytail Palm, Elephant Ears, Pampas Grass, Bulrushes, Poppies

UO:SE Plants:

Common:

Uncommon:

Rare:

Exceptional:

Exotic:

When can I receive seeds and resources, and what about pollination?

On the seventh day of growth you have a chance to pollinate your plants. This is also the first day your plant will change from a bowl to an actual plant. During this time you will still need to make sure you keep up with the upkeep. Cross-pollination, self pollination, and the rest will be in another guide.

Also with this day, your plant will start producing resources (if resource bearing) and seeds. It will only produce 1 seed and 1 resource (if resource bearing) a day.

Well that took awhile. lol :D Sorry it took so long to write this up. :( But it's done now atleast. I hope someone finds this a little helpful.

Also, thanks Kitty for putting up with me taking my precious time on this. lol
