Part One: Petty Justice

The cell in Yew was comfortable, much more comfortable than the dirty little hovel the Meadowlark siblings had endured as children. The floor was stone rather than dirt, the rats didn’t nibble at you in your sleep, and there were no cockroaches or ants to speak of. If it wasn’t for the gate and guards outside Serene could have made a content little home out of the place. Instead she was arrested for some petty crime.

Assault? I barely touched the fragile little trollop.

The Humanist cause had advanced quickly, they were everywhere. The progressive policies of King Blackthorn were thought to be dangerous by most people in the Kingdom. Orcs allies of the Kingdom? The idea of it was ludicrous, but the King was the King and his will be done. Out of respect the Humanists had stayed out of the way, left the Orcs alone. Yet still the war band was seen marching toward Minoc on the night of her arrest.

Fools, the Orcs were obviously pawns!

So many Orcs, Dwarves, Elves and Gargoyles walking, flying, skittering along the streets of Britannia. The sight of it was unnerving, humans were being bred out and crowded out of existence. For that reason alone, both publically and privately the Humanists had gained support among the nobles and the peasants alike. Even the Lady Amandine had expressed concern, and their greatest ally of all had simply disappeared from Sosaria.

The funds and support had been easy, colonists and experienced soldiers willing to abandon their lives to begin settlements in Ilshenar had been hard. Many spoke up for the cause, many more gave funds. So few had the courage of their convictions and were ready to live it!

One hundred men and women had just begun the colonization of the ruins just outside of the Chaos gate. Then the Knights of the Crux Ansata had swept in and murdered ever last one of them.

Such a waste.

Then there were the non-Sosarians, which posed an even greater threat than the Orcs. Serene felt as if she could see through their groupthink and collective hive mind.

Precursor to invasion, they are scouts!

The Humanists had their militant wing, their action squads, every political and sociological group had their zealots. They had taken one of the non-Sosarians for what they called ‘an interview’ but had really been a fruitless interrogation.

Serene had always tried to keep her brother from being too militant, too violent. Even the most just of causes can be soured in the minds of the people by too rash or harsh of action. She worried with her imprisoned she may not be able to contain him, and with everything else going on he may feel provoked.

God help them if he feels provoked…

“Mayor Meadowlark?” a voice whispered from beyond the locked gate.

“Yes, I am here.” She said in reply.

Her guard stepped forward and removed one of his gloves, on his wrist a woven bracelet of green and purple. Humanist colors. “We are everywhere.” He said.

Serene smiled, it was nice to have one of her people guarding over her, even here.

“You are being released today, King’s orders. The Governors of Moonglow and Vesper petitioned the King.” The man said.

“What of my brother? What of Jacobi?”

“No word miss, he has simply disappeared. No one has heard from him since your arrest, before that he was in the Blue Boar recruiting people for the cause. Since the protest and your arrest, it has been hard to keep the news of the massacre in Ilshenar from spreading. Our numbers have doubled.”

“Can you get me out, I’m being released anyway right? I have to find Jacobi before he does something we will all regret.”

“I cannot Mayor, the Captain of the Guard has to release you or you are marked as a fugitive from justice. Should be soon though, maybe lunch time?” The guard resumed his duties, counting prisoners.

The first crack of dawn had lit up the hallway outside her cell. Serene could tell, today was going to be a bad day.

Part Two: Justice Shattered

Little Charlotte had kept Lady Amandine awake most of the night, still on an hour and a half feeding schedule after a month of life. Her small frame soaked up as much feeding time as possible. Danica didn’t mind. The castle was kept warm, especially with her room so close to the fires in the Kitchens. On the rare occasions Charlotte would sleep two or three hours in a stretch Danica would lock the door and manage to get her own brief moment of sleep. Having just fed, both Charlotte and Danica had fallen deep into sleep in this quiet hour before the dawn.

Outside the castle a tall and lanky man in dark clothing stood across from her window, his clothes a darkened purple and jade green. He stared motionless and barely breathed, simply listening and looking up at the lightened window. When he finally did move, his movements were lightening fast and precise. From the grass he produced a long pole and using it, vaulted over the moat and clasped onto the castle wall without making a sound.

With every inhale, another handhold, with every exhale, another foothold. Quickly making his way like a spider up the wall and into the window of Lady Amandine. Inside was exactly like he had imagined it, a simple bed, a place for washing, and the little fatherless baby asleep at the foot of her bed.

So many Humanists dead, so many peaceful plans ruined, now his sister arrested for some petty excuse to silence their cause. Jacobi Meadowlark had no intention of going quietly, revenge, stunning, quick, and cold hearted revenge was on his mind.

“Her child killed with her own sword, is there any colder vengeance?!” Jacobi screamed in his own mind, full of rage.

The Sword Caliburn was easy to find, its glowing blue hue seemed to light up the room even in its scabbard. Jacobi reached out for it and grasped it in his hand, quietly and without hesitation made his way to the cradle which held little Charlotte Amandine. Hate and rage filled his eyes and he swung the sword down with every ounce of strength and despair in his being.

The room instantly filled with noise, Lady Amandine screamed in both fear and anger, Little Charlotte cried out, and a loud sort of static like the sound of a hundred carpenters sanding all at once filled the room. Simultaneously a bright light filled the room, so bright nothing else could be seen. Not the baby, not the bed, not even the Sword Caliburn could be seen, the room wholly a void of white.

Jacobi couldn’t move; his sword and his body seemed frozen. When the void of white finally abated he could see that everything around him moved infinitesimally slow. The fire of the candles barely moved, the now awakened Lady Amandine moved slowly toward him naked from the waist up, the baby below him, the sword above all moved microscopically slow. From the corner of his eye something moved impossibly fast, a pair of white deer. The two beings merged together in a blur and when Jacobi looked back down at the baby he meant to murder instead his vision was filled with the face of a white bearded man in a white robe, his eyes filled with rage and disgust. Time returned to its normal speed and Adamu Wellings caught the sword in his fist protecting the baby.

“Adamu!” Danica shouted, rushing and picked up the screaming baby.

“You dare come here Jacobi Meadowlark, with murder on your mind? With black in your heart, with soot in your soul? You dare come here and try to steal my child from the world?” Adamu growled and spoke through his clenched teeth.

The Sword Caliburn began to glow and crack, the fist of the infinite being holding it squeezed and the sword shattered into an explosion of shrapnel which filled the room. The form of Adamu shielded both Danica and the baby; the rest of the room lay in ruin.

Jacobi’s body peppered and bled from the explosion, the blue shards of Caliburn pierced him and he shrunk away from the trio in front of him in fear. Adamu stepped forward, and raised his hand. The broken body of Jacobi ejected out of the window and down into the moat.

Adamu turned briefly to look upon Danica and his daughter; a tear filled his eye and a proud smile on his face. Then he was gone.

Part Three: Justice Perverted

Somehow, Jacobi Meadowlark found his way out of the moat. His body utterly destroyed and ruined. The broken pieces of the Sword Caliburn burned at his skin but he couldn’t pull them loose. Around the wounds his skin had blackened into an ash yet his form remained. The pain was unbearable yet he crawled north, away from the city, away from the castle, away from Adamu. He moved out of fear, fear of the man in white, horrible overwhelming fear. Jacobi thought nothing of survival or pain, his mind filled with an obsessive desire to simply get away, as far away from the man in white as possible.

With every second Jacobi unknowingly changed, the glowing embers of the sword pulled inward forcing themselves deeper into him. His hands turned inward and elongated, his mind twisted and broke at the impossible sights he had witnessed. The burns around him stopped burning and faded into part of the background. His screams echoed in the forests north of Britain as his body changed.

The birth of a Daemon was witnessed by none.

And at the end of his metamorphosis, Jacobi Meadowlark had been erased from the world. In his place a vast and terrible perversion of Justice made form, a fire burned inside of the creature, a fire that demanded the whole world as fuel… and the world would bleed.
