Yeah, I am one of the hold out till the last minute possible to upgrade operating system because I am a.. if it aint broke don't fix it.. I got everything just like I like it kinda player =p.

2 days into my new PC build with Win 10, and OMFG I hate this run as administrator & unknown publisher warning crap! For the life of me I could not get UOAutomap to recognize UOAssist was running so that I could track my position After 35 min of reading old posts about calibration issues - it dawned on me to try to run the shortcut to UOAutomap as administrator. Yup, it works now.

I miss the ease of WinXP administrator account being a "superuser". Oh well, live and learn.

Win 8.1 and no more. Linux or Apple when this bucket can't do anything. Cortana is a key tracker, voice command app and more. I do not want that stuff touched to the extent MS has done it. <shakes head> Source for that statement ... here.

Its even worse than that. Remember Windows remote desktop? You could turn that on or off. Well, there's this thing built into the core of Win 10 called Intel's Management Engine (ME). It is designed for IT professionals to be able to do anything to your computer without any detection by the user. From what I understand, the entire thing runs separate & completely hidden from the core operating system. There is a lot of discussion on the web about it.

I'm sorry your having a bad time with Windows 10. I miss XP as well, it was a very good OS.

I am in the process of gutting Windows 10 as best I can to make it not have all this extra crap. There are alot of features that you can just turn off, but cannot get rid of. I'll figure this thing out eventually.

Btw you can turn off that ridiculous pop up about installing programs and run as admin under the user account control settings. There is a slide bar that can make it so that the damn pop up never comes up again.

That UAC crap dates from Vista/7, it's not a Windows 10 only thing. So it's a little late to complain about it.

And someone get a psych appointment for Heep (just kidding) :p . Vista was only slightly less an abomination than 8 was. I wouldn't wish them on my worst enemy.

I started with 3, then progressed thru 3.1, 3.11, 95, 98, XP, Vista, and the wife has 10. Of all of them, I liked XP the best :)
Old folks don't like change, ya know...

@Uriah Heep - I had 3.0, then 3.1, 3.11, 95, 98, XP, 7, 8.1. Somewhere in there was Win 2000 as well. As few as 1 and as many as 5 systems at once. I don't dare start on the old DOS versions!

XP and Win 7 were the most stable IMO. Win 8.1 isn't too bad once I got rid of IE and forced it to desktop.

The main reason I chose Win 10 over Win 7 (which I am used to at work), is Directx 12 & the fact that MS will be putting Win 7 to the graveyard in roughly 3 yrs.

I went to 10 from 7, have no issues really. The permission thing can be annoying, but it only wrongly effects one or two things so I hardly notice it now, and as someone said, not a 10 issue. If it's really an issue there are ways around it.

still have moments when I miss the DOShell.. nostalgia, I suppose, was the first computer
DOS shell still exists to an extent - do Start ===> Run and type in cmd then hit ENTER. There is also Windows Powershell ... a bit more robust shell more for network specialists and such.

I am not a fan of windows 10 either..

If you like Windows XP then Windows 7 is going to be the closest thing to it.. Even though mainstream support has ended for windows 7 you still have extended support till Jan. 14th 2020 as per microsoft website... https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/lifecycle?C2=14019
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/lifecycle?C2=14019
You may also visit your local small computer business (NOT best buy, staples, office depot) if there is one and they should be able to switch you over to windows 7 as long as there is windows 7 drivers for your machine.. A windows 7 pro 64-Bit oem license key and dvd is around $139.00 plus labor should be $50 to $70 bucks.. so about $200.00 for a legal license and physical dvd. If not they should be able to build you a custom machine with win7 that would be better than any retail (best buy/staples/office depot) computer.

But if you must use windows 10 by default a lot of settings are turned on that track what you do and send it to microsoft. First thing i do on a fresh install is go in the turn off as much of it as i can.

there are several sites that show u how to turn these off.. just googled and came up with these. Hopefully will help ya make windows 10 smoother and better! =)

I have used Nextag (linked in name) as a source of older Windows versions. If you cannot go back to Win XP then as suggested, Win 7 Pro is next best and it is a stable release. At home page, search Windows and release you want. Be wary as some are the license and a download, where others are the DVDs and license. My girlfriend and I just built her a new system and we got 8.1 Pro (both 32 and 64 bit) for about $125 via mail - DVDs and full license).

Not my fault that Microsoft went for an Ubuntu kernel for Bash on Ubuntu on Windows! :p
Still, my days are much happier now that I don't need to launch a VM to do some ARM Linux kernel development.
I only meant to say the Bash found on Ubuntu is actually GNU/Bash and such is the one found on Windows. RMS can get pretty salty on that issue Linux and GNU - GNU Project - Free Software Foundation. No beef intended :)

I guess I shouldn't mention that the Classic Client still patches and runs fine on Windows 2000. Ya'll will be moving back to that. Sadly, while it says it does support Windows 98 - it will not run!

Or if you long for that big old DOS black box Start =====> Run ======> Type in the run box ----- cmd

Or........on some Windows 10 desktops
Start =====> RightClick =====> Choose Run ======> Type in the run box ----- cmd

I'm just happy there's a full Ubuntu user environment running natively on Windows.... I might have to ditch Putty :p

Seriously, Ubuntu running on Windows is the best move Microsoft pulled in a very long time.
It made my life SO much easier. I love Win 10 for that.

Lol, funny thread. My desktop has Windows 10 Pro & Ubuntu, my laptop has Windows 10 Pro and Ubuntu and my MacBook Pro has OS X El Capitan and Windows 7 Pro. Why pancake about one when you can use all for whatever you need? These are just the basics.

edit: what's also funny is that words that are safe for TV get "bleeped" here.

And just for the record I LOVE Windows 10 and I'm older than all of you.
So far I am liking it a lot more than Windows 8 or 8.1, but I miss WindowsXP I just wish 10 would have been more like it.

you over 68? Cause that's my age. And for the record ... no Win 10 for me.
yep, actually quite a distance between you and me in age. I didn't like Windows 10 at first either, I put in on my laptop and my laptop barfed it up, so I reverted. Then I built a new desktop and it is Windows 10 for it's only system and I do love it, really. Oh, I did couple weeks ago put 10 on my laptop again and this time it runs terrific, it's faster than before, starts up and shuts down fast and have had no problems at all with it.

I liked Vista, my old tower still has it, not running it now, just to slow of a PC. my current system came to me with win 10 on it, over all its been ok but I am watching it very close. I had another laptop with win 7 which work ok till I went win 10 on it then the game was unplayble, no sound mouse refused to work right in game etc.. I now keep it as a back up/watch videos next to me

Both my GF and myself read all the possible articles on pros and cons of Win 10 during the freebie year. We both agreed it was not something we wanted to get into and the article on Cortana that I linked in an earlier thread post sealed it for me. My background in the Air Force had me under Top Secret clearance for all my tour (6-1/2 years) and then my IT career exposed me to many things that required special security or simple "lips sealed" type of behavior.

Twenty-seven years in nuclear IT and exposure to all sorts of security measures employed to keep even business networks safe hardened my desire for as much security on my personal systems that I can get. One early effort was simply using a browser other than IE (Edge now?). In fact my 8.1 system has no trace of it anywhere - simply due to it's close link to Windows and security holes. I use a host of other software to keep things free of gremlins that could get to me and do weekly scans for malware, viruses and even registry checks.

Until Cortana can be shut off and removed completely from Win 10 (unlikely) I won't go there. Simply because of what it does ... and that bothers the paranoia in me. Big time! <chuckle>

OOC:
I miss the "classic theme" which I had been using in previous Windows versions since it came out. Yes, for years and years, I'd been making my Windows look like Win 98 (which looks like Win 95 but less crashy).

I wish that
o Cortana had a non-signed-in-to-Microsoft functionality
o Cortana were more intelligent conversationally than Eliza and Dr. Sbaitso were

Bringing this back to topic, the UO classic client works under Win 10 and is slightly less crashy than it was under Windows Vista 32. Unfortunately EM events are still as laggy.

So do/did I.

Fortunately the Classic Client still got it. :smile2:
