If a player was tracking another player and the player being tracked is killed, he can still be tracked since the tracking arrow does not disappear when he is killed. (I dont think it was ever intended to be able to track ghosts!)

I have confirmed this issue and submitted a problem report into the system.

Similarly, if you're severing the tracking link upon death, you should also not have control of your pet upon death. Currently if i set my greater dragon on a player or monster and I die, I am able to allow my greater dragon to continue to attack the player or monster, IF my greater dragon gets low on health, I can simply log out, so I get a risk free use of my greater dragon upon my death.
