Last week, some friends and I were discussing our very first experiences in UO as in right after installing the game and creating a character. Some of them had some pretty interesting/entertaining stories. Please share your stories of your first experiences with UO here.

Here's Mine:

On a late 90's evening after bringing UO home from the local mall, I had installed it, decided rather quickly that I wanted to be a swordsman and selected my three skills for the template; swordsmanship, tactics and healing.

I logged in for the first time and Zuckuss dropped into the world. I noticed a vast world around me with actual human being players running around. I was in Vesper. There were shops, taverns, inns, docks and lots of bridges. Players were talking, trading, sparring, stealing and griefing one another at a highly populated Vesper bank. Lots of random items; reagents, hides, ore, clothes were left freely on the ground. Boats lined the canals. The sound of instruments, recalling and fizzled spells were heard almost nonstop.

I ran around in my blue newbie shirt and picked up some of the abandoned treasures which I would soon sell to NPC's so I could begin to lay the foundation of my vast future empire. I did that for a bit, ferrying skullcaps and short pants to the tailors, a few boards and a jointing plane to the carpenter and so on. I did this for a while until my primal urge to "kill stuff" had gotten the better of me.

I took my prize possessions (my shirt, pants, shoes and newbie dagger) with me out in the woods, just off of the bridge to the west of Vesper bank. I found a rabbit. I thought that I may kill this rabbit for it's hide and meat so that I may sell them and put the proceeds towards building my empire.

I engaged this rabbit in a 90 minute brawl. I needed to run to town and heal up twice. I thought "man, how am I not doing any damage to this rabbit?"

After a long time of battling this rabbit, a player had approached me and had asked if everything was okay. I lost my concentration on the fight and nearly died to the rabbit several times during the conversation. I explained to him that I was new, I was a swordsman and trying to battle this rabbit. He laughed, as he healed me up. He said "wait here" and he disappeared, returning shortly. He handed me a scimitar and explained to me that a dagger was a fencing weapon, and that "if you are a swordsman, you need to use a swordsmanship weapon."

I equipped the scimitar and thanked him. It only took ten or so hits with the scimitar to kill the rabbit! He shared a few tips with me and we eventually parted ways. I was certainly going to remember that players kindness once I have assembled my vast empire.

After the battle, some more selling and a mental time-out to regroup and plan my next few moves, I decided that if I was going to really make some money that I would need an actual trade. Picking up items off the ground and selling them did not turn out to be as a profitable profession as I had previously thought.

I created a miner. When thinking of a name, the first name I thought of that made sense came to mind; Minoc. Yes, his name was Minoc. He was from Vesper though. :)

Anyways, back then I did not have a map other than the cloth thing that came in the box. I followed the directions the best I could. I meant to run into Covetous mountain, but instead I ended up over by a red shrine. After some quick internet research and referencing all two individuals on my newly acquired ICQ list, I had learned that I was in an area called "Chaos Valley."

I had decided that I did not want to run for what seemed like eons back to Vesper. So I found somebody's public house, and I made it my own. This was my first mining house. Miner's Glory, a 7x7 small brick house located on the eastern side of the valley next to the mountain. Determined to build my empire, I hid a small crate in the corner behind the wall using my recently discovered circle of transparency 'spell.' This would be the place where I stored all my mining goods. I was going to be rich.

The next several days were spent moving along the whole mountain side, all the way through the valley, leapfrogging ore two tiles at a time, and learning that every public forge in the game is a blessing. There were some very long gaps within the valley with no public access to a forge, so after so long, I would begin to get worried that if I didn't smelt and drop off back at the house soon, a red player might kill me and steal the hours of work I had just did. I mined for hours, leapfrogged ore for hours, smelted for hours. As tedious as it sounds, I was addicted to it. Yes it was work and it was grinding, but every day was a new adventure. Every run held something new and exciting, and on those few runs that nothing exciting happened, you were okay with that too because it meant that you didn't get your mining interrupted or ingots taken, and it was fun to not have your hard work made meaningless.

I continued to mine, and hunt rabbits, sheep, pigs, cows, mongbats and eventually zombies, spectures and wraiths over at the Vesper graveyard. More certainly occurred after after this in the coming weeks, months, years, but the above is my initial experience in UO and the beginning of a long story that still continues on today.

I would be interested to read some of your initial UO experiences or stories. The first day, or few days or even a few weeks would all be fine.

Thanks for reading.

I don't remember my first days too well. It was a nightmare of talking to my college buddy via a mobile phone (didn't even have hands free) as he tried to direct me to Haven Graveyard to help me. I'm not sure why he didn't just meet me in Haven Town.

I never found him.

Somehow I ended up on Moonglow Island a few days later. Spent about two weeks there. Till a wraith came over to me. I knew I couldn't fight it, magic killed me every time, so I ran away. He kept following me all over the island. Shouting at me to stop. I kept going till I ran into a dead end. Turns out it was a player, a guy called Mark. He took me to his 7*7 in Malas and helped me out. We played together for many a year after that. I lost track of him many years ago sadly. I know he was ill, but I've always hoped he just stopped playing UO rather than anything else happening to him.

I was trapped on Haven Island for about a week or 10 days. Not knowing about the moongate or it's location, I saved 10,000 gold, killing ettins and such, to buy a boat so I could get to the mainland. A water elemental killed me on the way and it took a few minutes to figure out that I could still pilot the boat as a ghost. My body decayed before reaching the mainland. I lost everything, but I still had my boat!

I recall very little about the opening how to that I was given back when... I remember I had just bought UO:R and entered the world somewhere in some sort of trial I recall a hallway with a few turns in it... But then shortly after my UO life began someone hit the kill switch on my PC and it was a good 6 months before I got the hard drive repaired and had a new one booted up.

I then tried again to play UO and recall dropping into Haven. I wandered around trying to kill mongbats and the like when I happened upon a blue gate. I didn't know what it was and it warned me there was no going back if I exited thru but curiosity got the best of me and off I went. I believe it took me to Yew. Where I was amazed at the Abbey and the enormous trees! I knew I was "home"... I set off about the land and eventually found everyone gathered in Britain... I recall meeting several folk as I worked to raise my skills at the Cemetery near there. I even recall the name of the fellow that I always went to when I needed repairs... Pork Chop Jesus. He was always a kind fellow.... as I recall he was a Dread Lord. The Dread Lord Pork Chop Jesus. Ah those were the days. Back when Willa carried an axe as much as her bow.... and she honed her skills in both.. learning lumberjacking, fletching, healing, magery and archery... Eventually necessity forced the loss of Lumberjacking and she had to rely on others to craft her bows. Soon she had a sister who took over such things, Valeria, and Valeria soon had a husband Krom who worked with metals... together they saw to the needs of the family.... not long after Trilla was discovered roaming about Trinsic... she spent much of her time talking to the animals. It took several years but eventually they acquired a small tower south of Yew. The family was happy... they took in a fisherman they found who had nearly drowned along the shores of Yew after his boat ran into some rocks off shore and sank.... Vincent stayed on with the family... providing fresh fish. Everything was wonderful until the beloved city was hit by a terrible plague!

That's when Willa sought out help... and eventually joined the Yew Militia.

OMG. I remember the first few days/months as a complete nut house. Servers crashing. People everywhere. I bought a tent and placed right next to Trinsic. Realized tents were about useless, lol. Running from Barrier Island to Trinsic trying to get wool to make shirts and such. Along with like 10 other people all on that little island. The inmates were running the asylum and there were a lot of laughs. My son was like 8 years old and we both played for about 3 days straight. It was the most horrible wonderful thing ever, lol. Not counting Gamestorm, games were charging like 3 to 5 bucks an hour to play. It was so cool to play all you wanted for 10 bucks a month. It was a real deal. Had to make absolutely sure you had unlimited local calls and that you dial up number was a local number. I remember calling the phone company with a list of 4 or 5 numbers to confirm they were local calls, lol. "We tried calling both your numbers and they've been busy for days!", lol. Exciting times...

Oh gods yes I recall playing on dial up... we only had one internet service in town that offered "unlimited" service.... the other 2 charged by the hour... I recall though that every night about 6pm it would start disconnecting every 10 to 20 min or so for 3 to 5 min... I paid something like 350 dollars to have a "dedicated" phone line put in JUST for internet... Fresh NEW line from the pole to my house because the internet people kept BSing me about "noise" in my phone line being responsible for the constant disconnects. Then like a year later I was on the phone with them for the billionth time about the issue and they were all like "Why don't you get our cable service... it's much more reliable." To which I replied "Listen twit... if your company offered such a thing here trust me I'd have it but you P****S don't.... so don't tell me that fix it!" And she tried to argue with me for like 20 min before going "Oh... your right we don't.... I'm sorry." But as soon as my Cable TV provider offered Cable Internet with Unlimited access I dropped that dial up service like the rotten potato it was... and for like the next 6 months I kept getting phone calls from them begging me to come back... which I pretty much told them to go fly a kite and take a long walk off a short pier. Dropped my phone service too and went with the cable internet phone... told them all where to stick that. Since then I spent a year and a half not paying for my internet when they failed to provide me the service that I had ordered.... which was the "high speed" internet. Since my service wasn't any faster than those NOT paying for high speed internet my argument was that if they can't provide me faster service then them then I could technically sue the pants off them for false contract... Which they couldn't argue... so they discounted my internet until they got new upgraded equipment in... I laugh cause I still pay FAR less for far faster service than most the people in town. I'm always surprised at the number of people who complain about their internet and cable bill but never call them to renegotiate a fair price.

Those were some seriously exciting times though being in the middle of Shame killing earth ele's getting dissed and then logging back in ASAP to see a ring of dead ele's around my character.... thank gods for autoshooting archers!

I remember the stories on the news where some idiot would be calling dial up long distance and getting like $3000 phone bills lol.

LOL and people who had two puters having 3 different phone lines in the house....one for each dialup, and one for communication. even with 3 lines, and two dialup accounts, think it was still cheaper than what I'm paying for cable...:coco:

Unlimited long distance and unlimited dial up internet both hit the floor about the same time in Canada. However both companies deemed anyone that actually used the services in an unlimited manner were abusing the system. Internet providers would routinely disconnect your service every few hours. I use to keep a timer on my desk and would log to a safe location if I was in a game and reconnect to reset my connection. Then my local cable company started offering unlimited internet and things got soo much easier.

Ingame...my first day I was deposited outside the mountain range containing Destard. A friend placed the smallest possible house for me and I spend my days walking around mining. Ya walking...couldnt afford reagents. Finally the blue beetle arrived on the scene. and life was very good. Until it died then I would have to beg at WBB for someone to tame me a new one. Seem to me the going rate was 20 k gold back then...A princely sum. Either Pet bonding was introduced or I finally figured out how it worked ( after buying 3-4 beetles that died) then I just had to beg at WBB for pet rezzes. I remember the day I gmed mining....I was sooo proud! I had finally earned enough to scrape together a crappy LRC suit ( wasnt 100%) but it used few enough regents that it wasnt an issue.

I remember my first arrival in Brit like it was yesterday. This was in 1997 1 week after the game was sent to those who had preordered. I was at the end of that list and didn't get my copy until 1 week after launch. I was still getting use to me being in a world so filled with other players that I didn't notice the thief waiting for newbies like me to arrive. He/she promptly stole the 100 gold I was given at creation. I was devastated I thought what am I going to do now? Making GM in a skill was a matter of hours, only to have the server crash and the need to start all over again. Circles for magery casting were formed as that was the fastest way to gain skill.
I was part of a guild that had formed before game launch. Several of us wandered the lands killing what we could and running when we couldn't. One night I played 24 hours straight never realizing how much time had passed.
Dial up, lag, disconnects, server resets. Getting disconnected only to log back in and see a world of gray. PK's were king back then, maybe still are?
My first 7x7 house was placed on serpents hold. I died regularly upon recalling to my steps from Giant serpents. Back then they were something to be feared. Death was pretty much assured from a bite. I always wondered what they did with all my stuff?
They were good days filled with memories of experiences I never had before this game launched. It was the first of its kind and remains so today IMO.

Thanks for reading.
Only sort of remember it... I got UO for xmas of 98, took a while to get it set up and going. Landed in Britain and was out to tame some critters. The idea of dragon taming (as it was described on the back of the box I had seen in the best buy computer game department) struck me as the hight of coolness, and that and my friend who was in beta drove me to playing.
The only thing I really remember is wandering around town thinking "are those real people" lagging like a MF'er ending up on the west road out of town, then running into someone's fire field and dying. The next day my IRL buddy picked me up gated me to the park in Wind (getting into Wind/gating were sort of unheard of at the time, but he was hard core about the game, and had macroed his magery up to near GM levels already, one of few to be over 70 even) gave me a mace and told me to kill animals till my skills were respectable. So that's mainly what I did my first few days.

My son came home with the account, it was on his friends fathers credit card, as he was to young to have his own credit card. He wanted to play on my computer, the only computer in the house with Internet, dialup from Denmark, so very slow.
He knew he had to make me play to get access to the PC and the Internet.

Can't remember how he managed to make me let him install the game, but I remember he told me to sid side by him, so he could help me making a char, They was playing on Cats and my first char is still there. He made me a tamer, I guess he did believe that would be perfect for me.

I remember running around taming animals and trying to sell them to players. No one wanted to buy them. I can see I also have archery on that char. We did not stay long on cat and I never really got use to Freja on Cats, here is how the char look now after 17 years:
Tactics 52.8
Animal Taming 33.2
Bowcraft/Fletching 32.2
Focus 31.5
Archery 26.3
Lumberjacking 21.1
Tailoring 20.4
Hiding 14.6
Camping 11.6
Cooking 10.5
Snooping 10.3
Animal Lore 7.0
Meditation 0.8
Tracking 0.8
Healing 0.5

My son and his friends decided to move to Atlantic and I did follow. This time, I started out with a miner and started mining near Britain. After some days, I went north, first I was mining at the pass to Decide. A red stopped up, looked at me a while and told me, I should find a better place as this place was dangerous and I would get killed of players. I did not know that. Think he showed me the mining cave north of Brit. I remember there was a forge outside.

I got some friends there, I also got killed some times and after a few weeks, I decided, I needed combat skills. I got a sword, and started killing animals for leather and someone told me wooden shields was a good money maker, so I started lumbering too.
I started making bows and arrows too and that become the start of my life as archer.
After a while, I got the internet to work on 2 computers and we could play at same time so we got an account more. None of us would give up the old chars so we both made chars on the new account too and played one day on account 1 and one day on account 2.
Freja become more a fighter and less crafter and the new char become tailor, smith, carpenter, fletcher.

When Siege Perilous was born, I stopped playing Atlantic. My son got the new account and I keeped the old one and started one more and Freja started over on Siege with her new sister Tina Tink.
Freja Atlantic still have the skills from 1999:

Archery 98.0
Tactics 97.7
Focus 92.9
Anatomy 79.5
Magery 77.6
Lumberjacking 55.8
Healing 53.4
Magic Resistance 50.0
Spirit Speak 33.6
Necromancy 31.9
Meditation 26.3
Tracking 20.9
Hiding 2.4

She was red, when I stopped playing, but devs decided to make her blue some years ago. I learned alot of the reds on Atlantic and did hang out alot at the road east of Brit and at Coveteus.
I did have chars on DF too, but they too died, when Siege was born. I have alot good memories from both shards, but had not been able to play there after Trammel was added.
I had posted some of my old stories before so I won't do that this time.

Being a newbie in 2015 must be alot more confusing, than it was in 1997

My very first character was actually on my husband's (then boyfriend) account very early in UO... right around the time of T2A. He showed me UO and let me play a bit to see if I'd like it, but I started playing too much which was making him unable to play his own account. One day I lost connection, and when I finally got it back I found my character logged out in the woods naked with all her gear seemingly missing. I called him in a panic thinking I'd been robbed--actually he had hijacked my character and put all the stuff in her pack and I was just too new to realize it. I got my own account after that!

I remember picking up the box for UO in the store. T2A had just launched and there was a copy of a battered UO on the clearance table at my local store. I picked it up and looked at the back. I still remember the picture of the Ettin daring me to enter! I went home and installed the game straight away. I knew I was going to have a blast. It was like an AOL chat with blood! I logged in to Skara Brae and equipped my trusty dagger and went after the first enemy I saw. It was a rat. I knew I could handle that. I mean, I towered over the little creature. As I stalked my prey, I remember a number of players gathering around me. I knew they wanted to see a true warrior at his best. I double clicked my mouse and *THWAK* I was guard thwacked. How the hell was I supposed to know that someone had tamed the rat and let it roam around Skara Brae for new players like me! My body was looted within moments and I was annoyed. A week later I decided to give the game another shot... I met up with this guy named Lobonyx on Chessy. I had finally made a friend! It turned out we had a lot in common and actually enjoyed each others company (except when we were backstabbing each other in the name of 'roleplay'). We decided that we'd join force and start an anti-pk Guild. We met a bunch of characters along the way. Maeve, Talon Arnson, Jordi Le Forge, Skynbladder and plenty more that I've probably forgotten over the past 16 years. We spent a lot of time of time honing our skills at the Moonglow graveyard when we were not playing around in Shame, or at the Brigand Camp north east of Skara. I still remember the thrill of outrunning a PK and the triumph when we finally killed one ourselves! Over the years I've taken breaks from UO but I've always come back. I'm happy to say that I'm still good friends with Lobonyx. I'm also happy to say that we've both come back to UO (again) just a few days ago. Its great to be back!

Great story. Glad to hear that you and your friend are returning to UO!

Until July of 1999, I was already a fan of the Ultima series. I had already decided to join UO. The problem was, I was stationed overseas where I could easily surf the net, but connecting to a live game only caused problems. So I just learned about the game for the first few months of UO until I got stationed state-side in July.

Lucky for me, one of my coworkers was already playing at that time!

So by the time I started, I already knew what the game was about. I knew the map, having played all of the Ultimas to that point. I had contacts in the game to help me if there was trouble. So I was ready to hit the ground running.

And by running, I mean, after a tour of the land (where I saw the aftermath of a guild-war, but no (living) people), I stayed in town for about two weeks. And in town, I made shirts. Thousands of shirts. I made enough gold selling shirts to NPCs, that I could buy a house. And luckily for me, I found a house just outside of the Trinsic gate (at a time when placing was supposed to be difficult too).

Once the house was placed, I still stayed in town. I still made shirts, but cast spells while I made them. When there were no other players to visit with in town, I would lure monsters into my house to train swordsmanship. In another week, I was adventure ready!

And… I switched shards.

While I made my thousands of shirts, I kept in the character of my tailor. That is, he was a simple village tailor, wanting to hear the stories of adventure from anyone who came in. Keeping in character got the attention on someone from a different shard who wanted to start up his own role-play village. In buying me out, I got… A house, an absurd amount of gold (I think in the neighborhood of 500k, which was obscenely rich at the time) and all the equipment I could desire.

From there, I created a new character who was also a tailor, and refused to learn any fighting skills (Except for magery, but that was for healing only) until there was, from that character’s perspective, no other choice. But that was several months down the line and a whole other story.

February or March of 2002. I was still young IRL and (young) in UO.

I was immediately highly impressed by the ability to chat with people, heh. I had never really toured any international chat rooms. Fact I suddenly had all these people to talk to from all over the world was utterly mind blowing. Not sure if anything has improved my English as much as UO did. Since English isn't my 1st or 2nd language,it will always come with certain flavor of fantasy; it isn't the language I use to do my day to day RL routines. Instead, it was and remains language for fiction, fantasy, adventure and imagination. In every MMO I play, this colors the way I speak; I was all " Hail to thee me fair lady, tis a fine weather, blablabla " in UO before really knowing a thing about RP, in MMO context or otherwise.

UO had been on my radar for years. To the point where I bought Renaissance when it launched, even though I couldn't play. I thought (and was prolly wrong) that 56KBS connection would not have been enough. I didn't want to spend my 1st free month for nothing! Since nobody in family had credit card and I knew nothing of game time cards, for all I knew that month would be all the UO I'd ever see. When my parents got ISDN, I was FINALLY able to try the game. It was very close to what I had dreamed of, when reading Renaissance manual and all those cool " class" descriptions.

Haven was already a thing back then. I spend my time there with a fellow mage whose name might have been Raven or Raistlin. I remember us leaving Haven and heading for Brit Moongate. Couple of tamers there. Raistlin was all " WOW A DRAGON!!!" and I was all " dude you make us look like noobs!" He then attacked a Great Hart and the beast owned him. I wasn't any better. I'd get scammed, PKd and owned in multiple different ways over the next few weeks.

I'd make boots and dye them black with this tub I found in somebody's house. Then I'd sell these boots. Brilliant, I know! Even then I was (prolly..) vaguely aware that there must be better ways to make cash. Still, fact I could - do - something like this in a video game, and uh, make living out of it felt incredibly deep and beyond cool! Hm come to think of it, it still does. ; p

My main character remains the same shoe making tailor I first rolled way back when. Still a tailorin mage! And still miles from dinging 120 skill in Magery. :l

Same here, I started UO with a dictonary at left side of the keyboard. I only got in trouble, when someone want me to use Voice Chat as I can write English with no trouble but when I try to speak it, I can't get this stupid words out my mouth and people have hard understanding me.

Interesting...Freja, when you type or write the words out dont you hear them spoken in your head in English? Or are they spoken in your native tongue?

Maybe I am weird when I write or type, whether it is a short story or a post I hear the words being spoken in my head ( just like the cheesy movie scenes when see someone writing something out). Perhaps I am just weird ...I assumed it was this way with everyone.

I hear them spoken in my head when I'm typing in Dark Elven. Though I'm sure I would suck at pronouncing most of them. It's kinda fun that my character speaks the common tongue now fairly well but he still mostly curses in his native tongue as well as greets folk in his native language. Vendui'. Since I'm obviously not capable of learning a second language I find it interesting the questions in my mind about how folk do it. Does your brain automatically convert everything over to the native language or do you just know that Water is Agua no matter what word you call it by?

I have been told by various teachers and professors that you arent considered fluent in a language until you think in that language. If you think in your native tongue and then translate it to what ever language you are trying to communicate in, then all you are really doing is translating.

I have met people from the Middle Earth Society who can speak and write fluently in High Elven. I could never be bothered to learn it. I did write fairly well in Tolkien's dwarfish runes when I was a young lad. Great way to pass notes around school ...none of our teachers could decode them.

The year was 1999, I was 14 and I had always been a computer nerd. This was in the hey-dey of Windows 95 and AOL. I was very much into the Arthurian Legend and Legend of Zelda. One of my friends from the neighborhood I grew up in was moving away and had a yard sale to sell all his NES games and what not. He knew I was into the RPG scene and suggested I give 'Ultima IV: Quest of the Avatar' a try. I did and I loved it. I quickly became obsessed and played the game almost exclusively for an entire summer until finally beating the game. I knew there were other Ultima games to play, I had heard about an online real-time game that was also partially related to the series. So I called my local game store, they had it in stock, and picked up a physical copy of the game and related Prima Guide.

Before purchasing, I had done a fair amount of research about the game and liked the fact that aside from battle and combat related skills, they had crafting and other economic related kind of skills. So I created my first toon to be a fisherman. As this skill was painful to build up and very slow moving at lower levels, I got a little bored so walked around and chit-chatted with people who suggesting going the blacksmith/mining route. Shortly thereafter, I was a permanent fixture mining the hills of Sosaria, with a home base near Minoc. I never had a good computer back then, so lag was a real issue that prevented me from venturing into more areas that pressed the RAM harder. I fought my share of reds, usually losing, but always manned back up, got my packys and would go back to my spot to mine, smith, make armor and sell to NPCs and the occasional player in need. My sister, who was a few years younger than me, got much more deeper in the game and joined up with guilds and would go on hunts and what not, despite the shaky dial-up connection. We both played for about 3-4 years before high school and college completely stole our attention and we let our accounts lapse.

I was actually surprised when I got back in the game in 2012 to see that mining had become some what of a lost art. The only folks you see doing it anymore seem to be AFK scripters. For that reason, I haven't ever re-made any crafter toons since just about everything is easily available to purchase or order through someone else who can do it cheaper, better and faster. But back in the UO days of yore, that was my forte.

Nice thread y'all!

I shared my account with my husband at first. We bought the game before it was out and waited to be able to create an account and login. He played them all on PC and I watched him play on Nintendo too when we first met. (ah young gamer love!). We would take turns playing. Me on GL him on LS. The first home I placed on GL was awesome! It was next to my friends home and I could use his spinning wheel and loom in his home from my home! Ha! It was all great until I wandered to far from home and got lost and could never find my way home again. :( The first thing I died to was an eagle I didn't mean to attack and refused to hit anymore because killing eagles was wrong! :) and the next thing that killed me was a red grizzly bear...remember those?! The first PK I encountered was "The Postman". When we had downtime it gave us plenty of time to run to BK and grab some whoppers and would use UO monitor to play a song when the server came back up. I use Pink Floyd's Time as it had all the clocks going off in the beginning :) I have a million stories but that would too much to type here. :)

Got a beta account..my kids were in middle school and heard about this new game...I got an account to play along with them...needless to stay, they are long off to other pursuits and I'm still here. Random memories:

1) Unbelievable lag--I mean 5 minutes to switch screens kinda lag
2) My first house was a tent, but I soon added more (5 houses per shard per account)
3) Got killed regularly by mongbats!
4) PKs would stage an assault somewhere and people would get posses together at Britain bank to go counter-attack them
5) Great orc role-playing guild captured my and insisted on shinies or they would kill me..became great friends
6) Picking reagents up off the ground everywhere i went to use or sell
7) OMG I threw away a zillion wigs that came as monster loot--who knew they'd become rares?
8) The only rugs were furs
9 )My main bank was Occllo--way before this New Haven stuff. All the banks were often used--each had their own following.

I guess I'm one of the few people on the forum whose early days weren't pre-tram.
I didn't start UO until 2007, and that was only because my PC couldn't handle Skyrim. After years of playing all the Ultima RPGs - even the weird and buggy Ultima 9 - I was very disappointed when they announced that was the last one and it was all moving online. I figured I got enough of real people in real life. So I continued with the Baldur's Gate series, Planescape Torment, Neverwinter Nights, Icewind Dale, Morrowind, Oblivion.
As I said, I finally decided to give UO a try in 2007. I started on Legends because that seemed to be the shard closest to me. My first house was in Fort Briarwood, an area that was heavily populated at the time.
After two years of building up characters and a decent inventory, I felt guilty spending so much time on the game (mainly because of my wife) and quit. I let the house fall, because I had no thought of coming back.
Well, Stygian Abyss came out with Return to Britannia, and I started again in October 2009. Legends was still pretty populated then.
I quit again in 2011 (guess why), losing the house again (including about 10 conjurer's trinkets I got from the skeletal lich in the Yew graveyard). This time I was sure I had quit for good.
But in January 2012, I started from scratch the third time, rebuilding in the same spot on Legends in Fort Briarwood , now surrounded by empty landscape.
When I first started, I couldn't understand why people would have two characters, let alone two accounts. Now here I am with three accounts, playing on five shards.
I think the wife has now given up arguing about it. She has her habits; I have mine. :)
