UO is the only game I know of where gold is not tied directly to your character, and is a physical, tangible item. Now, there are debates on both sides of the aisle as to whether this should be changed, how it should be changed, and so forth. But in the meantime, I'd like to propose a solution that would ease typical shopping experiences throughout the game.

Presently, if I go and buy something from a player run vendor, as long as I can afford it, I can buy it.

If I go and buy something from an NPC vendor, unless I have the money on me, the only time it comes directly from my account is if the amount I'm trying to spend is 2,000gp or more.

I would request that the amount be changed to 1gp. As long as I have the money in the bank, allow any NPC to withdraw it for me and pay for my goods. It's already in there at the 2,000gp amount. Let's bring it down and make it convenient to not have to remember to go to the bank for the few times I'm not actually spending in excess of 2,000gp.

I'm sure I'm not the only one who would appreciate it, and it would be a step toward the "money follows you around" convenience of other games.

i wonder if they made it that way back in the early days so people would have to have some gold on em most times so thieves could have fun pickpocketing? As of modern day UO it does seem pointless to have to carry gold for under 2k purchases.

I agree with this 100%. it's annoying. nothing else. just annoying.

is it really that hard to get gold from the bank for things that cost less than $2k? shrugs, say withdraw 100...pretty simple.

i dont know i guess it doesnt matter now but the rules prevented people from farming a vendor area because you had to bring the cash with you. shrugs.

Well... I totally see the issue, I really don’t have experience with the original player vendor system, back when vendors lived in tents in the grass... BUT this could be part of that old-old world.

Maybe one of the old-old timers would know more about this. We are on our 3rd generation of vendors, the NCPs are still under the original design. 2k gold was a lot of money. Now, gold is about worthless due to the fact there is no intention to fix the gold system with all the damage that’s taken place over the years. It wasn’t all that long ago gold was a lot harder to carry around and they changed the weight. Still, for me at least... when I go to buy runes or whatever from town, I always have gold on me. Pop over to the bank, grab 2k, then off. I’d see this as an extremely minor problem that has an easy personal cure. No offence.

I think a far better use of programming/development would be doing a gold exchange so gold has value again. Worthless old stuff for valuable new stuff. They will never allow us checks over 1m gold, so if you’re business holdings are over 200m gold, you are talking about a lot of used storage... or using vendors as ATMs. That’s basically what I do along with many of the vets. I only have, in holding, maybe 1-5% of the total gold attached to my empire that is way over 200m. The rest is held by my 40+ vendors. Need to buy something big? I hit the vendor... not the bank. It's a very broken system that needs to be fixed, but will never be fixed. Sorry to say.

You also don’t even need to open your bank box. Just say “Withdraw” then the gold amount you want.

I'd have no objection to it, but it's never been an issue affecting my game play.

Its not a huge game changer but it is annoying. Especially so when your not near a bank. I think it would be a nice change.

It's not a matter of difficulty, it's a matter of convenience. I agree that at one point, carrying the money made sense. It doesn't anymore, and hasn't for a long time, and since systems are already in place for nearly every cash/carry situation (the trade window being one that can't easily be impacted), it makes sense to me to adjust the 2,000 limit to 1. Truthfully, at this point, it doesn't make sense that a vendor will say, "Oh, you're spending 2,000 gold? No problem, I'll take it from your account," but is like, "What? You're only spending 750 gold? That's hardly worth my time." ;)

Anyway, just to clarify, I'm talking convenience, not difficulty. :)

I can't see any reason not to do it... and it shouldn't be that difficult to change. You might want to submit the suggestion to the Devs.

I noticed a couple of people refering to "programming time." I can't fathom that the programming time would be any more extensive than changing a value in the "check against player cash" from 2,000 to 1. The system is already in place as it is -- it's just modifying it to accept a lower amount to withdraw from the bank. That's really the reason I suggested it, because it would be an easy fix.

We could help the gargish economies, perhaps we could convince the devs to allow gargoyles to make purchases with goblins they keep in their banks too? Would make transactions there a bit easier... less ankle kicking at least. *wink*

Yup, it is pretty silly when you have a few million in the bank, but it is in check form, so the stable master tells you you can afford to stable your pet!

This is what seriously irks me.

I know I have gold in the bank... why must I clutter up my bank box with 40 piles of gold when I have one check in there...?

In the beginning it wasn't a big deal but now that items cost as much as they do the physical gold system is out of date and should be retired.

I'd like to see a ledger that contained the gold associated with the character that could be used instead of physical gold. Something that would act like a chivalry book does with tithing points only it would be character specific and couldn't be lost(or duped.)

*nods* I think I could argue convenience is a lack of difficulty :p but I suppose I can agree with ya on this one. would have been annoying in the old days when we bought regs from moonglow and the like if someone could just sweep in there I suppose but now things are so spread out.

This is one of those where I'm on the fence. It would be convenient, especially if you no longer have to loot gold off a corpse however . . .

could cause troubles with thievery in fel and its awfully fun to see the huge stacks of gold appear on the ground when you kill the champ.

I like to have the physical gold when it comes to doing deco. Nothing like making a treasury with piles and piles of gold...

However it would be nice that all gold just went right to the bank and was added in whenever you killed something... no more looting stuff and trying to haul all that gold to the bank. BUT and here is the deal breaker...

That would only encourage scripters to stand somewhere and kill easy stuff hour after hour after hour scripting tens of millions of gold.

So My thought was that once the gold is deposited in your bank THEN it becomes just a number. No checks no piles just a number. This is used whenever you buy things from vendors or NPC's. If you need money to give someone you ask for a check. However I still think checks should be only in amounts of up to 1mill. This would help keep folk from getting seriously scammed or whatever.

But it would also free up bank space and house space if your 900billion in gold were just a number in your bank.

Or perhaps the gods of UO would see fit to limit the amount you can put in your bank to 500million.

Also you could still then run up to the bank and say "withdraw 100".

Problem solved and I seriously doubt it would take that much programing.
