I think it happened when the server couldnt work out how to save a DC whooping

Actually, the GMs would also tell you to go on Stratics Forum, so it's a bit recursive and knowledge seems to have been lost somewhere inbetween. ;p

Actualy In the Old Days if you had reached a GM on any other server they would direct you to play a new shard and wait out the down time building new friends there till your shard was back up. Which back then could take 3 to 5 working days if not longer. Its how many of us got spred on many shards. Give it time the hamster needs to rest and eat while they fix his wheely go round.
