Wow I was just checking out Warcry, a friend of mine writes for them, and what should I find but a very nice write up about the roleplaying potential of UO. Check it out. It is titled: RoleCraft: A Look at Ultima Online RP
by Jim H. Moreno. He gets it.

One of the things I'd like to see him add to the mix of his acrticleis the ability to host RP events for other players. When I initially began playing UO, it was simply because it was an Ultima game to play, another source of Ultima material I could use for my pen and paper Dungeons and Dragons game. At that time, however, my gaming friends were getting ready to head off, either for college in other cities or for work opportunities in other cities. UO suddenly became a place we could continue gaming together despite the distance between us. At this time, I discovered UO was a great medium for organizing RP events. I started by organizing linear RP adventures, much like some of the quests EA has offered recently. I'd activate temporary accounts to create characters they would speak with to learn the next step they would have to take in the adventure. It might be a reclusive witch out in the wilds of the Lost Lands they had to find and speak to or it might be a bard in a city tavern. The fact that you can travel anywhere in the realm no matter your skill level is a huge bonus to roleplaying. The other thing which was immensely helpful to roleplaying was the way items were handled in UO. Indulging in the creativity of roleplayers, I would dye a bagball black to represent a hole in the ground. A marked rune within the bagball could be use to get players to the next stage in the adventure. I'd use out-of-the-way locales in existing dungeons to represent subterranean lairs the players had to enter and conquer to find what they sought in their current quest. What's more, with the current guild system with their alliances and warring, I could create custom villains for them to battle along the way. I don't play any D&D games these days. I'm too far removed from any of my old players. That doesn't mean I don't get to roleplay, however, thanks to UO.

My theory on role playing:

If you play Ultima Online, you are role playing.
