I don't know what to do atm my computer just informed me virtual memory is low.

I restocked vendors yesterday, I was trying to move things from one of my Siege homes to the main one...when I got the computer warning me virtual memory is low.

If I never get back on again I will miss yall, *hugs to all*........I guess my houses will remain standing on Siege, until I no longer pay for them to stand there.

Reboot your computer...

Its not fatal. You just need to look at what other programs your computer might be running and see if any can be closed down.

Also, maybe see if anything can be removed from your computer. Uninstalling programs that you haven't used in a long time and storing some files on CD/DVD can help.

You need to clean up your computer.

1. Hit start, hit control panel, hit add/remove programs, go through the list and remove items you do not use on a regular basis.

2. Hit start, hit all programs, go to accessories, go to system tools and choose disk cleanup. When its done calculating, check mark them all and let it clean your system

3. Hit start, hit all programs, go to accessories, go to system tools and choose disk defrag. Hit analyze once it opens, and hit defrag when analyze done no matter if it says you need it or not.

4. Download free malware, spyware and adware detectors...run them and clean up your comp of crap.

After its all done, REBOOT. That is the number one thing I tell anyone, is reboot. Virtual memory on programs you run gets higher and higher the longer you run a program. So if your like a few friends of mine who leave their comp running for 3 weeks straight without rebooting, of course your memory is going to go crap.

Hope this helps, if not you can PK me later. :gee:

Virtual memory is a part of the hard drive that your computer uses to make "virtual" memory when you run out of physical memory. You probably have a dynamic virtual memory page file. If your hard drive is full it will limit the page file from growing to meet your memory demand.

Couple solutions

1) Close any other programs running that you don't need while playing UO. Don't forget about the programs running in your task area. (ie: next to the clock in lower right corner)

2) Delete, or move, some files from the "C Drive". Make sure to empty your Recycling Bin

3) Add more Physical RAM.

*After remove, or moving, a large amount of files a De-fragmentation is always a good idea.*

All of the above... And drop some serious hints to the hubby and kids that mom would love a new computer for mothers day. If they all chip in on that vs some flowers that die off in a week it should be doable?

Actually my birthday was April 19, and I asked hubby if we could go to Best Buy & all over to at least look at all the new stuff from laptops to desktops to lil cute notebooks and all the new tvs even ...just to look and for me to ask the sales people lotsa questions. Our local Best Buy actually has the more geeky geek squad to at least spend time answering all my questions and nervousnesses about moving forward or hangin it up for good on computers.

NO this is NOT an ME, they sucked I refused to buy one back then just like I rejected VISTA, and did all I could to make my WIN 95 last till XP came out. This is an XP but it IS as old like when XPs first rolled off the assembly line. I believe I got this computer [Dec. 2003]. UO is about all I bother using a computer for though.
That is why I have always liked my 2 Gateways, look how many yrs. they served me basically without issues !

I was overwhelmed talkin with the one youngster at Best Buy but he went thru his own lunch hour trying to help me out to help me decide to either hang it up or move on to WIN 7 and newer technology besides my old but faithful dialup. Best Buy guy showed me Dells, Gateways, HP, and a lot of other names of computers by newer companies, I never heard of. Hubby gets discounts on any Dells he buys, but when ya have had only 2 computers last for well over 5-7 yrs all Gateways... I dunno. I jokingly kept lookin at the lil notebooks as the sales kid said to me ...baby steps may be the way to go for you. It won't do your game but ya would learn win 7 from it. :)

I still do not know what to DO yet. . or if I even CAN operate the new bells and whistles Win 7...but I seen a 99 yr old on tv yesterday running one of them new thingies so she could read again. Maybe if a 99 yr old can figure out those, I *might* be able to figure out WIN 7 and figure out what to use to CONNECT to the internet or how to get someone techy to do that FOR me IF I get a new computer that is. They all seem a lot cheaper than any computers used to cost us all !

One also has to ask is a 12yr old game like UO is worth the money, for a new computer ?
Course the concept of never seeing UO again, is also not very appealing either !

Timothy, I actually added 2 sticks of RAM on my WIN 95 with my son on the phone at the same time I was doing all that, telling me how to take apart and add those sticks to my Win 95. I was a nervous wreck doing it but I did it right on that old Win 95 thanks to my son on the phone directing me on what to do back then.

With XP I really wouldn't even know where to touch to even take my tower all apart like I did on Win 95. I wouldn't trust myself either, on even this computer to the tower all apart to add diddly to it. Only things I replaced on this XP were the monitor when it set on fire a couple yrs ago, :) and 1 keyboard that the dogs spilled ice tea into and bought 1 new mouse to this, over the years.

I took it in 1x to a techy repair shop, when my cd driver busted, cuz ya needed that for the new UO expansion when they GAVE us a CD that is to use, he added me a new one ages ago and did some maint on this XP. He is still around still reliable operates a computer fixit repair shop locally here but one has to ask also is an old XP even worth adding RAM or memory to... since technically it is now 2 computers behind the times of newer Vista and WIN 7.

I defrag every day, and weekly I usually hit delete temp internet files etc. etc. I did some remove programs yesterday though, on this thing. But I think I have to face reality, this Gateway Gamer XP is getting older on me faster lately, it has served me well since Dec. 2003 though, as did my Win 95 before that.

My bigger issues I guess are now I am more afraid to *move forward* than I ever was with XP even, I do not know if I can even fathom all the changes and make em work to continue to play UO, too much to maybe learn or to figure out when all I really even bother to use a computer for is to basically log onto UO a very OLD online game, that my son got me into with the WIN 95 & Ultima Online both of which, he bought me, so I got to hang out with him in UO while he was away in the US Navy.

I did wow the computer Best Buy guy on a Gateway they had in there up and running......he put it on Mahjong tiles and he was clueless on that *game*, couldnt find the matches fast enough soo he let me take over and I whopped his arse on it in the store...offline game was on that computer that I oft play offline anyhow. :) I had fun briefly in the store there on that new computer swiftly matchin up all those Mahjong tiles. :)
