wrestling your way to the top

This is the second of my two grievance posts.

How come mace fighting, fencing, swordsmanship, and archery... how come they all get to contribute to the 300 skill point cap for mana reduction? Why not wrestling?

I've been toying with the idea of some dexxer temps involving wrestling. The ideas seemed plausible until I realized that wrestling would not count towards the 300. Since I had no ninjitsu/bushido/nox on the template either, it looked like I was really out of luck. I've played dexxer temps before that fail to meet the minimum points required for mana discount and it is brutal.

I think the range of what skills can count towards mana reduction should be widened. Could help dexxers get out of the ninja/nox/bush pigeon-holes they have been shoved into over the years.

No poll on this one.

Mana reduction? Is this new or just something I`ve never heard of/read about before? So 3 fighting skills gives you an invisible mana reduction bonus or something? Please explain? Thanks.

I`ve always thought fighter mana depended on INT and whatever you could imbue on armor to help out the mana situation.

I think he is referring to the mana used for special wep moves. UO Stratics - Special Moves

"The Mana Cost of each special move can be reduced if the warrior's skills are high enough. Add up the skill points for Swords, Mace Fighting, Fencing, Archery, Parrying, Lumberjacking, Stealth, Poisoning, Bushido and Ninjitsu. If the total lies between 200 and 299, subtract 5 from the Mana Cost. If the total is 300 or more, subtract 10 from the Mana Cost."

Hope that clears it up for ya :)

*edit*

I agree with the OP, wrestle should be included imo.

I had the same thought with wrestling dexxer, but then u can't get any stat gains from weapon slots. The next booster should introduce brass knuckles or something like that

Disarm and para-strike are pretty useful.

Also, if you have Bushido, Lightning Strike works with Wrestling.

As, interestingly, it also does with JOAT Wrestling.

Realistically, though, basic hand-to-hand techniques were taught with every ancient or medieval weapons fighter I know of. Knights had wrestling; Samurai had Ju-Jitsu; peasant warriors were built up from their time in the fields and could probably punch pretty hard once you disarmed their pitchfork etc. I always wondered why post-disarm defense wasn't a little better for warriors.

Because I'm talking about defense, not offense, it shouldn't touch mages much (save those who attack with both weapon and magic of course), and people have claimed for years that disarming in dexer fights was getting out of hand anyway.

that is exactly what I was referring to.

I agree. Wrestling wouldn't be the stand alone melee skill here. It would serve as backup for when disarmed in a fight. These templates I been brainstorming were in response to an abundance of disarm-archers and parry/bushido disarmers.

it's not about figuring out how I can fit ninja or bushido onto a template, it's about making something new. that is what dexxer template creation has turned into. pick yer melee of choice, toss poisoning onto it, and then decide how you want to go bushido or ninja/stealth. I want more options than that is this sandbox land of opportunity!

Yeah, Wrest should count towards it, as should Chiv too now, since it requires so many skillpoints to actually be useful.
They honestly need to make Human JoAT affect it too again, to make being Human once again useful. With Elves gaining +20 Mana and +5% Energy Resist Cap, and Gargoyles getting Berserk, +5% HCI Cap, +2 MR and 30.0 points of Mysticism for free, allowing them to cast a near full power "Enchant Weapon - Lightning" if they have Focus, Humans are left in the dust when it comes to useful racials for being a Warrior...or any other template for that matter. Only thing i really find being Human useful for, is gathering +10% Leather while skinning...

All my toons are human. I only have one that is an elf, and he is so for purely RP reasons as he is an ORC and wants to have the dark orc like skin.

I absolutely refuse to play gargoyles. They are an eye soar to me.

Maybe for being human you get an auto +5 mana discount to all special moves. But then in order to hit the +10 you actually need to get to 300 skill points combined as usual? Or maybe at 200 skill you get +10, but then at 300 you get nothing cause you've hit the cap. I dunno, just came to me.

I'll now pop into Yew just to see what kinda temps are at the gate, and it'll be like 5 gargoyle throwers. That says something about where the game is going.

I'm hesitant to say chiv should be on that list, because a 4/6 chiv toon already has the benefit of casting close wounds and cleanse by fire at almost impossible speeds.

I actually had wrestling on an archer character for a few days.

Ya see, there was a guy whose entire tactic in (RP)PvP was disarm-disarm-disarm. This was as annoying as hitting someone with an arrow and running away, which... um... nevermind. Anyhow, I wanted to surprise him with an extra trick, so I stoned 120 wrestling on my archer. He dutifully ran up to me and disarmed me, and I disarmed him right back. He didn't notice that he was swinging fists at the archer, and then died of a bad case of wood poisoning. (We did fight each other quite a lot, and he wasn't expecting my change of tactics)

We had a good laugh about that, and I replaced wrestling with mace-fighting and never looked back, since I kept running out of mana as a wrestler.

As for the original idea, I have no opinion.

I tried making a wrestler ninja who could DS when ninja first was released...
The downfall was that after I DS'd someone, there was no reason to run because I was still doing wrestling damage.

That was a good laugh, followed by a good cry.

Unfortunately now a days DS requires hide & stealth. So if you want to DS you have to be an assassin. Good and bad I guess. Not going to get into it now...

I do see the potential for having DS on an archer, but the fact that you have to deliver it via up-close-melee, means that archery is kinda unnecessary.

And yeah Farsight... I can relate to your story.
