Worthless Skills 101

After FINALLY becoming a GM beggar, I've decided to try my hand at another, fairly worthless skill, herding. Can anyone provide me with information regarding this skill? What animal should I herd at what level? Is there a list of animals I am able to herd? So far, the skill gain has been pretty steady, and I'm in the low 60's. Any help would be greatly appreciated! :bowdown:

It's sad when people don't think out of the box and see no use in some skills. Herding is a great skill to use in Felucca. A group of herded bunnies and sheep work almost better than the paralysis spell...la

Also, what's the top end animal that I'll be able to herd? Can I, in theory, herd any critter that's able to be tamed?

Looks like herding is not difficulty based so should be able to herd anything to raise skill.. My guess would be more animals would mean more skill checks..

Never raised it myself but for a safe area to raise skill I would try the sheep farms outside Yew.

Unlike some other posters.... I'll try to actually be helpfull

Herding is a difficulty-based skill. So you'll have to herd increasingly difficult creatures in order to gain. Generally a creature's herding-difficuly is about 20 skillpoints lower then taming-difficulty. So, where a tamer should get good gains off Ridgebacks from about 105 skill, you can get decent gains herding them from abound 85 skill.
Oh, and you can herd any creature you can tame.

The easiest way to raise herding is to train it on a character with taming. You can then tame a creature with the appropriate difficulty-range, have it follow you and herd it over and over. If you really go at it you can GM herding in about a day or so.

A few days ago I had the opportunity to do a little bit of greater dragon herding. Someone had abandoned this poor fellow over by the statue at Grimswind. We had a nice long walk together....

I have a Stealth Herder on Atlantic. I have used it to feed a bard friend with dragons. When I was training him, I would take 70 + animals to Brit bank. Some people asked me if it was an event while others withered all the animals to death. I had one guy ask me to do it again and gave me a 500k check for doing it.

You know what's fun with herding......... I once went training on Ice Island using my herder (who by the way is GM now)..... and I got every single one of the white wolves and snow leopards on the entire island following me...... that was a hoot........ Here's a pic even......

PS: If it helps it's pretty similar in training up to taming..... so basicly if you do whatever at what level for taming it's the same in training the herding....... around 95 or so I was herding the heck out of the kirins and unicorns in Malas.....

I went from unicorns to cu sidhes, and the gains have been staggering! I'm now nearing 96.0! I can't believe how fast you can raise this skill. Thanks again, and I can't wait til I can start menacing the world with my herding prowess!

For more fun, put it on a stealther. You can herd while invis. Drag the whole forest into town. Drag that Rune Beetle away from the spawn while invis, and then tame in a quiet area. All kinds of games to play in Felucca.

Hmmm, I wonder if you were to 'herd' a few greater dragons in Trammel, might be in interesting skill to train up in Luna...

Does this constitute luring? Yes, probably, so don't do it rofl would be funny though hehe

To lure a greater dragon out of a dungeon requires you to tame it. Herded animal will also not gate or recall. So you could tame the dragon, then release, then herd.

However, all evil aligned critters do not go back to the original AI when released. They stay put in one place. Thankfully with the latest animal tweak, they now will defend themselves if attacked. So you could park a dragon outside your house, where it will sit until someone is dumb enough to play with it.

All good and neutral critters do return to their original AI after being released from a tame. So you could flood an area with Unicorns, and they will attack all evil players etc...

Taste ID actually does have a use. If you loot some Potions off of someone that are the same type as the ones you have, but they won't stack, use Taste ID on both stacks, then you can stack them together. Humans can do this with JoAT, and oddly enough, my Elf Necro/Mage can do it too with 0.0 Taste ID skill.

You should keep an open mind before writing something off as useless, especially if you're asking those in-the-know for help.

Herding is far from being a worthless skill. I could send you an essay I've written on the topic but I don't think you're actually truly interested in uses for the skill, yes?

If you want to simply waste skill points for the sake of it, just get 20 skill in 36 skills. The Jack of all Trades bonus for humans negates any skill invested at that level, so your points will truly be wasted. Or, raise supporting skills like eval int, anatomy, and arms lore, but not magery, healing/fighting, or trade skills.

Actually, herded animals set to move to Yourself will often follow you out of dungeons.
I used to pull dragons out of Destard and lead them to the macro-miners.
(didn't work as well after Fast Cast came in.)

In case you somehow misunderstood the OP; I believe the point here is to master fairly worthless skills in the game relative to other skills (perhaps this means income, depending on how you define worthless). It's not about wasting points, and much less in easy to obtain skill levels, it is about a challenge. It sounds like the OP has established goals that others do not often consider and would not devote the time to. Sure Herding has 'some' (I remind you the OP did say "fairly worthless") uses but it is quite limited in comparison to say, Magery.

However if you talk about use or especially worth, the Begging skill in that same spirit is 'useful' as well, and can bring in an income. But who actually takes the skill looking to be a power gamer? ... Regardless they are not common skills and I admire the effort to try new things, considered useful or not... After all it's a game and as I said before, it sounds like the OP has found a different form of having fun and getting satisfaction out of UO, regardless of how he/she defines that.

Perhaps you would do well to keep an open mind as well, and read/respond with a bit more care and accuracy before you make a blunder.

As far as the essay, I'd be interested in reading it.

Thank you Solikos for the kind words! And yes, when I said "fairly worthless" I was indeed using certain skills such has the majority of offensive/fighting skills as my point of comparison. I didn't realize I needed to specifically spell out exactly every loony thought that was running through my head in order keep certain posters from chewing my hide. Either way, I do appreciate everyone's help, for they did indeed provide me with additional ideas in how to use my new skill!

And Lord Lotan, I started working begging last Halloween, I was pretty enthusiastic with my training until about the end of November. At that point, I was in the low sixties. I only recently, since about the start of the Dark Moonglow event, began to work again. I put all other skill points on soulstones in order to keep the skill gains coming at a fairly quick pace.
