Why don't I always gain honor with my archer?

I am confused by the Honor virtue, why I don't always gain honor with my archer yet I do with my macer.

Here is the example: I honor miasma, achieve perfection and kill it off. With my macer I always gain honor and achieved level 10 pretty quickly. With my archer, perhaps 1 in 3 times I get the message that I've gained in honor, even when I achieve perfection. My archer is still only level 7 after days of farming miasma.

How is it supposed to work? Is this normal?

Archery is harder to gain Honor in than meleers are simply because of the distance you have to maintain. In order to gain on an archer you need to be within 2 tiles of your target, not move, and stay there until it's dead. This is why I use succubi for Honor. I can 2-3 shot them with my Demon Slayer heavy crossbow, which makes it really easy.

Dang, Connor... that was a fast reply! Are you sitting at the forums waiting for me to post? HEH

I didn't know about the distance thing and didn't see that noted in whichever guide I read. Thanks for the info.

Nah, just happened to pop in at the right time. The info is buried somewhere. I can't remember exactly where I found it as it's been a few years since I read up on it. If you can handle succubi with your archer they're really the best to get that last dot of honor. I can usually gain enough to hit knight in 10-15 minutes in the dojo.

Quoting from Stratics...

"Gaining Honor:

You can gain Honor by engaging in honorable combat with monsters or NPCs. You can do this by double-clicking the Honor icon on the Virtue gump and targeting an appropriate opponent. You will face your opponent, bow to them, and speak the words, “I honor you.”

You then must defeat your opponent in an honorable fashion.

Honorable combat is defined as:

* Allowing your opponent to damage you first.
* Engaging in one-on-one combat.
* Not using ranged weapons, unless you stay in the same spot where you honored your opponent, or you only damage your opponent while adjacent to them.
* Not allowing your pets or summoned creatures to help you during the battle.
* Avoiding the use of poison.

To engage an opponent in honorable combat, your opponent:

* Must be one that you can perform negative actions upon.
* Must be at full health.
* Must not already be honored by a nearby player.
* Must be close to you, in your line-of-sight, and have a clear path to you."

Break any of the Honorable Combat rules and you reduce the amount of Honor.

Thanks UOBoy... I've been doing a bit of experimenting with Miasma and succubi, and pretty sure those rules have been changed, or were never implemented that way, and it doesn't work that way any more. Heh

I seem to get the full honor (or at least the message) when I am within 3 tiles of Miasma on the final kill shot. The rest (where I was when I honored it, how far I ran between each shot) doesn't seem to matter. I can't imagine that they would try to calculate and store all that information anyway... too complicated.

It doesn't matter how far I run, break line of sight, or anything else as long as I let it get close for the kill shot.

I seem to get full honor with my pet. At least not enough of a reduction that seems to matter.

Whichever (me or miasma) gets damaged first doesn't seem to matter, or reduce honor enough to notice. I get the honor message even if miasma never damages me at all.

It could be all those rules are in the code, why it would be so complicated is beyond me, but if honor does work that way the reduction isn't a lot except how far you are away on the final shot.

*checks notes* I think that's all I've tested so far.

Breaking any of those rules does not prevent an Honor gain. Breaking the rules reduces the amount of the Honor gained.

The problem is you never how much or how little Honor you've gained (1/10 of a dot or 1/1000 of a dot). You only know you've gained in Honor. So those rules may apply completely.
