[Blacksmithing] Why do ppl trash helm/shield BODs?

Is it because they dont fit into any LBOD? Why dont they just fill them to get a new BOD?

I am not sure but I used to trash numerous bods because the rewards weren't worth the ingots. Now I trash LBODs that aren't worth the ingots and save all the smalls but due to Idoc loot I have a huge pile of unfilled smalls for dull copper and shadow. I need to get back to mining again for a while cause I can't find dc and shadow ingots for sale

I have thousands of bods and shields and plate helms take up more resources to make and give nothing worth while and do not go into larges! Although with the bribery changes some of these will now be saved and upgraded to pofs!

Pretty much it was like this (will change with bribery):

Iron shields/helms/female plate: Easy enough to fill for a new BOD.

Normal DC-Bronze (or gold*): Usually tossed because the reward not worth the ingots used*
Normal Gold 20 count, Agapite 10-15 count: Always filled for POF (90%)
Normal Agapite 20ct-Valorite: Reward not worth the ingots used.

Exceptional DC (all), Shadow 10-15 count: Filled for POF (20% or 90%)
Ex Shadow 20 count - Gold 10-count, Gold 20 count, Agapite 10 count: Reward not worth the ingots used.
Ex Gold 15 count, Agapite 15 count: filled by some for the cheap 10% of one of the ore-colored anvils - some people tossed them.
Ex Agapite 20 count - Valorite 15 count: filled by some for the copper hammers, bronze hammers and low-end ASH rewards.
Ex Valorite 20 count: tossed or used as deco - reward is a 115 PS.

* Some people, like myself, will fill 20-count normal Bronze, and 10-15 count normal gold for the 20% chance of powder; others will only fill the 90% POF chance normal BODs - and some even won't waste DC on the 10-15 count Ex smalls that only give 20% powder chance.

I've not had a chance to test - do you get to choose which way a bribe upgrade goes, is it random, or does it follow in a specific order? The order is important, as to which BODs might be worth bribing for, as improving one specific property (count/material/quality) might make a BOD worth doing, but changing one of the other 2 would result in a BOD that would require multiple more bribes to be valuable (if not permanently ruining it).

Percival - I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one...

Idiots in U.Hall, when I point out the lack of DC & Shadow ingots for sale, and that my mining couldn't keep up with demand, demonize me as some sort of moron, because according to them there are dozens of filled vendors with millions of DC & Shadow ingots for sale on every shard....

Ok, I see what you're saying... I for some reason thought even taking a loss on filling the poor reward BOD is acceptable when you turn it in and immediately request a new BOD which might be much better (in effect engaging that RNG more often).

[Edit]

Can you tell me what prices you buy ingots at? I would like to buy supplies but Im afraid the prices I see on vendors are rip offs but I have no clue anymore on the UO resource market....

vorius - it's not worth the effort even with the new BOD given for many of them

Here's how BODs break down

50% Weapons / 50% Armor/shield/Helm
All weapons are iron

of the other 50%
roughly 28% are combinables (fit large BODs, or the LBODS themselves)
22% are the non-combinables.

of the non-combinables
Depending on the Blacksmith skill of the person turning them in...

70-109.9: 11% iron, 11% Colored (50/50 split)
110.0-119.9: 6.6% iron, 15.4% colored (30/70 split)
120: 2.2% iron, 19.8% colored (10/90 split).

of these 50% are normal, 50% are exceptional.

Note that, based on ancient references that the ore color distribution is mirrored in the metal type distribution of BODs, then the non-combinable smalls that are worth keeping are even more rare.

OF small BODs
Iron BODs (including weapons, non-combinables and combinable armor): 75% at GM, 65% at Elder, 55% at Legendary
Colored Combinables: 13.54% at GM, 19% at Elder, 24.375% at Legendary
Colored Non-Combinables: 11.46% at GM, 16% at Elder, 20.625% at Legendary
Halve these numbers to get the Normal/EX numbers.

Of the colored small BODs that give POF
20% POF chance:
Bronze Normal 20: 2.333% of normal Colored BODs.
Gold Normal 10 & Gold Normal 15: 3.733% of Normal Colored BODs
Total: 6.1% of normal colored smalls
90% POF chance:
Gold Normal 20: 1.866% of normal Colored BODs
Agapite Normal 10 & Normal 15: 2.8% of normal Colored BODs
Total: 4.666% of normal colored smalls

Exceptional:
20% chance of POF:
DC Ex 10 & EX 15: 7.4666% of Exceptional colored BODs

90% chance of POF:
DC EX 20: 3.733% of Exceptional colored BODs
Shadow Ex 10 & Ex 15: 6.533% of exceptional colored BODs
Total: 10.266% of exceptional colored BODs.

Only 14% of Exceptional colored BODs, and 10.766% of Normal Colored BODs, have any chance of a worthwhile return exceeding the amount invested in filling it, if turned in small. Multiply these by 25% (GM), 35% (Elder) or 45% (Legendary), then divide by for the actual percentages of all BODs these amount to. Not many at all.

Compared with the sheer volume of iron BODs you can turn in to get new BODs (75% to 55% of all smalls, depending on skill, and you can buy the stuff for the normal BODs from NPC vendors!), you're better off saving your colored ingots for those few POF BODs, and for filling the sets you complete by turn-in/replace of the Iron BODs. You fill all BODs, you'll run out of colored ingots long before you run out of BODs.

As for ingot prices, I personally think that DC or shadow are overpriced at more than 40 GP per, Copper & bronze at about 60 per, and gold & higher typically should be 80-120 per. Part of the problem is that some of the ingots are worth hundreds of gold equivalent per ingot at the library (39 points x15 gold for Valorite, or 1 ingot worth just under 600 gold), and you have to compete with those people trying to cheap their way into stocking their Library Talisman vendors on some shards (leather ran into the same problem, and horned & barbed leather went up to 150 & 225 gold per on some shards for a while - before many vendors just gave up trying to stock them, or started charging more to where it was cheaper for the people buying it for library donation found checks cheaper).

I just filled all of my valorite singles that recieve +10 ash rewards because I now have more valorite ingots than I need for all of my large valorite BODs whenever I get the parts. I use the +10 for normal smithing because it easier than having to carry and change out tools all the time.

I can understand the complaint that DC are hard to find as when they get bought off the vendor they may not be replaced as quickly, but do you really have trouble getting shadow ingots? It's probably more cost effective to gather those yourself (in bulk) anyways.

Basara,

Thanks again for such a deeply informative explanation!

I have to admit I am still struggling a bit to grasp all those probabilities, but I'm going to keep re-reading it as I go along maybe it will click as I do more smithing in game,

Gorbs: Probably I can keep supplied in shadow if I really worked at it, but the last 6 months were consumed with getting Fish, provo & peace up to 120, and trying to make headway on my T-map collection (I actually managed to get a decent amount training my T-hunter up to 90 mining).

BUT... At the same time, I wasn't requesting any BODs either. Between departing friends and an IDOC, I had so many Shadow BODs at one time that I would have needed 20k shadow to clear them out (granted, 8000 of that was for 4 120 PS LBODs and their smalls). I'm back now where I'm almost out of POF again, and no ingots to fill BODs that give it from DC & Shadow, and ample Gold & Agapite ingots, but none of the POF BODs at that level. Perhaps its time to pull out my orc slayer and go farm the brute again.... (and mine between brute spawns).

It didn't help that when I was mining to train my T-hunter (who's a melee specialist), I was also trying for Paragon Elemental chests(in Ilshenar) I didn't have, so much of the time, anything that could have been Shadow ore got elevated to copper or Bronze for para attempts, or left at DC to save GPA uses and mined with sturdy tools (and the DC used immediately at home).
