Why can't the "pedestal" be more functional?

I do enjoy having pedestals to display stuff on. Why can't they be more functional? Would it be that hard to make it function like the "sign" from the Holiday Gift? How neat would that be! I mean, the animation for the pedestal clearly has some kind of mini plaque on it...
