Why are there no elf ships?

Yeah I know this isn't the most important thing in UO right now, just wondering why orcs, gargoyles and humans have ships, but not elves? Could be a craftable ship that can be made with different wood types that would give it different properties (faster but less durable, reflect physical damage, etc etc). As well, why aren't there upgrades that carpenters/tinkerers can make for ships? Like a ram for the bow, armor that slows the ship down but increases durability. etc etc.

Just saying, would be nice, and could make ship to ship combat a lot more interesting.

And no mermaids or sirens in this game? More random encounters at sea would be nice. Maybe some water dwelling tameables that could accompany and guard your ship?

all good ideas. it has been mentioned before about craftsmen/women making boats maybe add a book on shipwrights or something that can be obtained buy a quest (craftsmen can do) to learn the skills of boat building

Elves live in trees not oceans.
Humans live in houses, not oceans...in fact I don't think any of the races "live" in the ocean.

And depends on the fiction you follow. I don't know the elf fiction for UO, but plenty of other elf backgrounds have ships. And even if UO elves aren't known for sailing, pretty sure they can learn from other races. And most importantly...it's a game based on fiction so...anything goes! So there Flutter, now go back to your gingerbread house, I think Hansel and Gretel are about done cooking. ;P

jokes apart you must consider that elves lived in heartwood (a city on a tree) for centuries... they don't even have money and they are dressed with leaves :D

The best ship they can have is a dogout like this one:

They DO have elf boats....you just cant see them :D

I saw an elf riding a dolphin one day when I had been out to sea fishing for days after looting a chest of sea dog ale from some pirates I raided. Really!

In other news: a new Heartwood quest allowing crafters to make a small type boat out of heartwood would be nifty!

As well as Galadriel's swan boat, if memory serves, Frodo sailed west to the Undying Lands with some elves in a rather nifty little ship.

According to Papa Tolkien lore, Elves did build ships, the Teleri (the sea elves) were the greatest ship builders, and where built at the Grey Havens.

Elves have been hidden for ages (since the era analogous to Ultima III), and they haven't had the time to reestablish any kind of sea presence. They also don't seem to have much engineering experience (they don't have crossbows, for example).

Orcs, on the other hand, have occupied the port opposite Cove for quite some time, and have engineering experience (the orc mines), perhaps better than any human society (possibly on a par with the Gargoyles, though less in need of magic interaction).

Gargoyles probably didn't have any need for ships, either, until they left Ter Mur to interact with the twin Sosarian facets, and realized that the huge seas were too much to fly over, and used their crafting expertise to try to out-do the humans (which probably inspired the non-Tokuno humans to make their Britannian ship to outdo the Gargoyles).

There are probably a dozen reasons why the elves don't have a ship.

  1. Because the Dev's don't ever "finish" things. ML is "done" to them so there will be nothing more for elves.
  2. The Art department most likely could NOT do an elven ship justice. Therefore we should be thankful they didn't even try.
  3. Elves are the evil step child and botched first attempt at making a new race in UO therefore they don't have many things they should have.
  4. It never occurred to them to make an elven ship.
  5. It would have been too hard to make the elven ship... and they wouldn't have had time. (Refer to why there are no doors, floors or roofs for the rustic or Gothic expansions)
I'd like to see them add an elven ship. Most all of my characters ARE elves. I'd like to see them add more colors to the elven skintones. Especially woody colors like browns and tans. I'd also like to see them "finish" the SA and add more horn and skintones to the Gargoyles. I'd also like them to add in a way to change the horncolor and skintone of the gargoyles without me having to either delete the character or use a race change token.

But then I'm a big dreamer too. I could list 100's of things I think they should do for UO. But I seriously doubt that I'll live to see many of them.

There are elf ships but they are invisible.

You have to remember that alot of the lore gets in the way of change and having the freedom to create.

When you take any lore from any story you have to remember that the ideas are human ideas that are written to capture a feeling or emotion that create a visual fantasy.

So, to try to write one lore without involving other lore you take away the human idea and that's what Ultima should be, the ultimate ideal image not just the image of Ultima.

They like their hair way to much to strap two sea turtles together even.

Elves would grow their boats giving the plant growers a new job.
