Why are people hitting me off screen? Are they speedhacking? [Redux]

I made a topic on U Hall a while ago (which I can't find now) explaining how people hit you from off screen. But it only included a couple screenshots and you couldn't really see its effect in-game. In an effort to better explain to our guild members why this happens, I went a step further and made a split-screen video. It shows what two different characters see chasing each other. At some points, one player sees no one on screen while the other is only a couple tiles behind.

Pause the video at various points and compare what one character sees to the other. This effect is even more pronounced if you are playing with the 640x480 game window (both clients are 800x600 resolution).

The lesson here is if your target is running you don't know where they are. Just an approximation. This is something all MMOs suffer from to certain degrees and at this time is impossible to fix, only mitigate.

That's interesting.

The other day I say someone standing well off screen of a Dark Father and hitting him with magery spells.

If another player is standing still you can see their true location, whether you are also standing still or running. From your comment, you must have just been mistaken about the distance because there is no way you can hack the Magery spell range code and extend it. There are also spells such as fields which have no range limitations. You would have to post screenshots/video of the encounter for someone else to explain exactly what was going on. But I am confident there was no foul play.

Of course there is speedhacking. But I see being throwing out comments left and right about how someone is speedhacking when they are clearly not. Just because someone can keep up with your speedhacking does not mean they are doing it as well. It only provides a tiny benefit that is barely noticeable. It is not the big deal that it used to be when people could literally run 2x faster than you. Today it is like 1.05x faster.

Forget it I have been trying to get this through peoples heads for a long time now.

The only reason it even provides that much benefit is due to the removal of a fine shred of latency sending packets through your computers stack. I can achieve that very same effect with expensive hardware such as the Killer network card the idea behind that network card and a speed hack are very similar.

Still I have to wonder how you tested this man. I sat here with both the computers side by side and ran around with liz chasing me and it looked exactly the same on each screen. There should still be a synchronization delay between the 2 machines.
