I recently met Jeremy at the UO Town Hall meeting in San Diego, CA and was fortunate enough to persuade her to sit down and answer a few interview questions. Jeremy struck me as a warm, friendly and honest person with an immense passion for games. Rather than asking her a bunch of questions about UO that have been asked a hundred times over, I wanted to know just who Jeremy was and what exactly brought her to work in the gaming industry. For those of you particularly who question a staff member's dedication to the game they represent, I think you'll find this interview quite interesting. These questions were posed as personal, and answered as another gamer, not as an EA Mythic employee. Unfortunately I did not have a recording device so the answers are from notes and not exact quotes, I'm sure if I misquote Jeremy she will be happy to correct me. Without further ado, here is the interview.

Q. How old were you when you played your first game and what was it?

A. I was 5 or 6, Kindergarten; one of my friends got an Atari and we used to hang out for hours playing. I don't even remember what games he had but we played that thing as much as our parents would let us. I was so impressed I started saving all my pennies and when I had enough money I got my dad to take me and my jar of pennies to buy my first Nintendo. I think I remember my dad took me to the bank first to change my pennies into dollars so we didn't **** off the guy at the game store.

Q. What made you decide to make games your career?

A. Ultima Underworld. When I played that game for the first time I thought, "This is it, this is what I want to do with my life". So fresh out of school I moved to Austin, I wanted to work for Origin Systems. Got my first job at NC Soft instead and the rest is history.

Q. When did you start playing UO, and are you still an active player?

A. In '97 when the game was released. Yes I still play, I'd consider myself a casual player. I'd say I play for fun at least a few hours a week. That's above and beyond what I do for work.

Q. What's your favorite Character class and play style?

A. Paladin, because he's pretty indestructible, not the greatest of fighters but he's almost impossible to kill unless you fall asleep. Between spells, bandages and potions he's pretty easy to keep alive. I play PvE; my reflexes aren't good enough for PvP, and I’d just get my butt kicked.

Q. What do you like the most about UO?

A. Its flexibility; being able to create any type of character that suits your play style. It's non-linear, you can play any part of the game at any level, no restrictions. Most other games you have to grind levels to gain access to new areas or skills etc. UO isn't like that, you can start with any skills you want and develop just those skills.

Q. What do you like least about UO?

A. A lot of aspects of UO are not user friendly. Tedious skill gain, resource gathering, things that force you to do repetitive tasks.

Q. What would you personally like to see fixed the most in UO?

A. Well, there are a few things I'd really like to see fixed. I know this is supposed to be personal, but from a professional standpoint, I'd really like to see the ROT skill gain on Siege get some love.

Q. Do you play other games and if so what?

A. Yes of course, I'm a gamer; I've played most everything at least to try it. I play CoH and WoW to name a couple.

Q. What else do you do with your spare time besides gaming?

A. Currently Karate, athletic stuff, lifting weights, running. I spend so much time at the computer I feel like I have to do something physical.

Q. Where do you want to see your career go from here?

A. That's a tough question, as being a community liaison I'm kind of at the top of what I can do in the community area of gaming. I think I'd like to work on some bigger projects, possibly get into design and development. I know C++ and just about enough game code to be dangerous. The devs let me look over their shoulders occasionally to see what the code looks like and for some ideas.

Well, I promised you ten questions so I'll let you off the hook at this point. Thank you so much for taking the time to sit down with me and giving such honest and candid responses.

And that concluded our interview. There are a few things I'd like to mention that just don't make the translation between sitting and talking with Jeremy and reading it in text. The look on her face when she spoke about her first gaming experience and saving her pennies for her first Nintendo; she looked like a child remembering Christmas. The look of passion when she talked about Ultima Underworld and moving to Austin to look for work at Origin. She is definitely in the right industry; I doubt she would be happy doing anything but games for a living.

Until next time,
Ghost Writer

I would have embellished a little. It would have been something like this...

"Working on my Ninjitsu. Specifically my acrobatics and kill moves"

Have you been to a town hall meeting? Have you seen the passion on her face?
Well I have....there are great things in store.....instead of being negative and complaining are you doing anything to change the game you love? Are you sending in reports....ya know Jeremy took 3 hours after the town hall ended just to sit and talk with us....she had friends she wanted to meet but she put her passion (UO) in front of that. Maybe you should find something constructive to say instead of...well due to filters I can say the rest...I didn't mean positive but at least constructive....

Because I was raised with some manners, and appreciate the fact that Jeremy sat down with Ghost and answered some questions for all of us. Neither of them had to give their time to do this.

QFT. Well said Tor.

I can hear the ban stick swinging now for my head, but sometimes someone has to stand up and take a shot for the cause.

wanderer1origin have you ever met one of the UO devs in person? They do care, and are doing their best for UO -and- the players. Of course everyone has a right to an opinion, but paying a subscription every month doesn't obligate or give someone the right to pee in everyone else's Corn Flakes.

Everyone is well aware of issues concerning the game, the rest of us don't need to be constantly reminded at every posting. If that is a problem, reach down... and untie that knot in your shorts and take a cold shower. You'll feel much better.

Better yet, make the effort to come to a Town Hall (there are 3 left... Seattle, Austin, & Chicago), and ask those burning questions in person. Make a list of questions you want to ask beforehand, take notes as you are there. You'll find that more of your questions will get asked & answered than not. You'll also get some one on one time with both the devs and other players.

There is a lot of inane misinformation bouncing around on the forums because players don't always bother to read or follow the information that is given... they'ed rather gripe based on assumptions.

As my grandfather used to say, "If you don't have anything good or constructive to say, keep it to yourself."

By the way, nice interview Ghost Writer and Jeremy. Hope to see you in Seattle! :)

Extremely well put Tor, and Zigzag and Nok!! I was there too, and I can tell you the passion in both Jeremy and Leurocian's face and attitude was undeniable. I'll throw roses (dethroned), chocolate and Queen Mum's cookies to them all for being so dedicated to a game that many of us have come to know and love for it's wonderful people.

Wanderer, I may get in trouble for saying this but, if you can't say something nice, go elsewhere!!

Personally I think Jeremy has done good job at getting things fixed in this game.

The numerous bugs and changes this team has taken care of over the last year is impressive to me. I've played since 98, and I have seen teams come and go.

I thought Hanse was good (when he did Test Sosaria, and balanced pvp right after AoS came out it was awesome fun, now it's balanced but dull), but past that I haven't been impressed with anyone more than Jeremy.

People really should give this current team some slack, you've got people who are passionate about the game, people who've played the game, PLUS you've got Sakarrah on the dev team who has ACTUALLY PVPED.... (not that she was L337, but she did run a protection mage and participated in large scale battles at least)

Sure you all complain about dupers, but honestly, it's got to be hard to track a dupe if they don't know what they're looking for, so it takes people reporting it to find out.

There probably isn't a huge budget being devoted towards this game by EA, so the changes are coming but in a slow fashion, however, things are happening and will continue to happen. I'll keep playing as long as Dark Fall never comes out =P

Don't feed the trolls bro - you're better than that. Those of us who were there, and those of us with reading comprehension can see from Ghost writer's well written piece just how awesome Jeremy is.

Was way cool of Jeremy to hang out afterwards. She is the right person for her job. She was excellent standing up and speaking to a room full of people (no small feat) and is defiantly sincere.

Jeremy was patient and courteous, and above all, generous with her personal time. Ally and I (& our over 10 accounts) will probably continue playing UO for many, many more years because of staff like Jeremy and Leurocian.

I'll drink one for Jeremy :shots:. I can honestly say she has been on these boards and gets down in the dirt to resolve the problems and is not afraid to go toe to toe with some of these rude people.
It is nice to meet people behind the scenes and put faces with names. I give her cudos for the interview and thank Ghost Writer for taking the time to do this for all of us that read the forums.

It was OK, though one poster discussed how UO is going to be turning around due to passion...

As much as people say UO is on its last legs. the same amount talk about these 'great things' the devs have up their sleeves to reinvigorate UO. Neither one seems to be happening though.

It pleases me that the new board system of Stratics allows me to use Japanese characters. This post doesn't suggest making discussion in Japanese but only aims to let Japanese people understand this great interview easily. So, sorry, English speaking people, please ignore this post.

Thanks for Jeremy and Ghost Writer.

Q. How old were you when you played your first game and what was it?

QFT I understand that resource locations were randomized in an attempt to thwart scripters but I wish this would be fixed to be more "user friendly".

PS thanks for posting the interview!
