They're heavy and pointless, hah. I thought I read somewhere that a butcher's knife would skip the hides step but I was wrong. Which tool does this?

You can use a butcher's war cleaver on the corpse and it will cut the hides into leather and put it in your pack.

Hrmm, I guess it's off to questing then. That auto loot sounds super handy...

The Skinning knife (not the butcher's knife) also does it - but only when Equipped (The Butcher's War Cleaver works with the cleaver in your backpack, as well as when equipped).

I have a really nice Reptile Slayer Skinning Knife I use on my primary tailor, who has just enough fighting skill to harvest his own horned leather (and occasionally Barbed from Mares or serpentine dragons).

the new harvester's blade from plucked turkeys does it while in your pack as well, but it gathers all the resources: meat, scales, blood. I dont know if the other two do the same thing.

The others don't, but sometimes you don't want to have the meat & blood.

I was thinking the same. Usually I just want the leather and need to make the most of my weight limit.

Don't know about the harvester's blade,, but the other 2(skinnig knife and butchers war cleaver) don't work for a gargoyle?? So far none of the gargish blades I have found will do this??? Gargoyle can't even equip the skinning knife or cleaver. They will skin the critter but not cut the hides and put in your pack. Kinda screws my garg mage getting any hides for me. This feature would be most handy while I harvest toxic slithes.

There is a weight limit to what it will put in your backpack. I'm not sure exactly how that works but once you reach that weight it leaves the leather in the corpse. Haven't tried it on gargoyles.

If you have one or both of the following conditions, the cutting tools will leave the cut leather in the corpse.

1. You have 63 or more items in your backpack (Remember that a BOD Book counts as 1 items for itself and the first 4 BODs in it, +1 item per 5 additional BODs in it, up to 101 items if full of 500 BODs).
2. Your total weight is over 340-350 stones. We've not been able to conclusively narrow it down, but it seems that it is a limit grounded in the old pre-renaissance maximum STR of 100 or the pre-ML backpack size of 400 stones. If the weight of the hides (before cutting) would put you over those numbers, the leather gets cut, but left in the corpse. For most leather harvesting, this limit is hit in the mid 300s.

I have been using the new harvesters blade the last couple of days and it no longer leaves the leather on the corpse if your weight is around 340-350.

It will in fact overload you to the point where the weight limit of the backpack is reached (590 stones I think it is), then it leaves the skins on the corpse.

Personally I prefer the harvesters blade over the war cleaver and the skinning knife. Partly because it increases the yield with 10% to 15% and partly because it's born with spell channeling and no casting penalty.

It appears that the previously mentioned faults with the BWC and skinning knife (other than the knife having to be wielded) were removed when they added the Harvester's Blade, as they were working the old, broken, way prior to the Turkey Publish.

About time - the devs were asked to look into why the weird limits existed on them about 3 years ago.

Ironically, I'd just submitted a Dev question about them, that I had to redo and have my fellow staff delete the old version.
