Which Server?

Hi!

I last played UO in 2001. Now I want to play again (mostly because of Shroud of the Avatar).

My question is: Which server should I choose? Where are most players? I guess it's important to mention that I am from Europe (Austria) and would like to play on a server where people in my timezone are active unless more is going on on a US server at any given time than on any European server.

I used to play on Drachenfels, but I am willing to start new on another server.

Drachenfels is still pretty active, regular events both EM and player organised.

We very busy on Drachenfels, we try to have 3 events on the week-end, player runs or Em events. If you plan to ttry Drachenfels, you could join my guild that is specific for new and returning players. Its part of a 70 guild alliance. You pretty luch always find someoen around to help.
You from Austria so you will a lot of german speaking players in the alliance but we have a lot more otehr languages too.We have several player run towns where you welcome to build your new home.

Depending on the event we have between 15 or 40 players .
All our events are made on sevral different forums. Like the 2 Petra gave link too. But also on UOB and Knuckleheads .

We are a smaller shard but we have a lot of fun... and yes we are crazy

And thanks to Frarc for the invite - my next question would have been how I could get into the game again, who could help me (I forgot everything - well I might find the bank in Britain still ).

Oh man I am really looking forward to it! I remember going back to work after 8 pm to use the internet to play UO because I didn't have internet at home back then for some time. I was crazy addicted to this game.

Ok just installing. What happened to the 3D version? I really liked it when it was released. Guess I was one of the few. Just saw that the enhanced client is also 2D graphics but with other UI.

I will try the Enhanced Client (don't hit me) and am watching this video series to get a good start and don't bother you guys with question like "how do I open my map"

EDIT:

Reactivated the account. I guess I start a new character. Don't like the name of my old one and I need to learn everything again anyway. Can you point me to a guide about character creation? I don't mean HOW you create a char but which builds would be good etc... I want to create a combat char - is spellcasting or melee better and so on...

I want to start out the best possible way and your help is really appreciated!

Thats the beauty of UO, there are so many possibilities in building your character that its almost impossible to say whats best combination. A lot depends on your play style. For someone that returns and need to relearn i can only advice something simple. a pure mage or a bard mage. A tamer mage is nice too but its will also be a lot of work.

You can make a pure warrior or a paladin warrior . or go even more for a more powerfull Samurai/Paladin. We can give you 1000s of combinations.

Can try things out and if you don't like it , turn it down. Or go to Test Center and Just give your character the skills you think you aim for and try it out.

Its going to be a lot at first but give yourself time to relearn things.

First thing you need to get if you train a spellcaster is a 100 % Lower regent Cost suit!
We can help with that.

And for all templates having a all 70 resist suit is realy needed.

Give yourself time and concider yourself lucky that i have 2 weeks vacation to guide you

Two more question before I start (yes it might be silly tht I don't jsut start, but I want to make the initial skillset count ):

1.) CAN you somehow rename your character?

2.) I never PVPd when I played all those years ago. I kinda want to do that this time, so I want to go for a template that is working good in pvp. I somehow don't want to be too magic based. Sword or Crossbow is fine unless magery is way better at the start. Any recommendation there? I find a lot of old threads about it but it might be outdated. (eg is this still viable and true? : http://voices.yahoo.com/the-ultimate-abc-archer-guide-ultima-online-3525791.html?cat=19 )Just for the starting out stats and skills. If you have a good link it would help too. There doesn't seem to be too much about pvp here or maybe I am looking in the wrong place.

Yes, you can get an in game "name change token" to do this. Prices vary from shard to shard but I would say between 15-20m.

You can claim a "Soulstone" if you have any veteran reward picks on the old account - or you can buy "Legacy Tokens" from the UO Store and pick the Soulstone from it. A Soulstone lets you store a skill for future use. So you could put Swords onto the stone and then train up Fencing. You could then get a 2nd stone to put fencing on and reclaim Swords again.

No but you can move skills from one character to another on same account with a soulstone. You can even store skills with it and get them back if you like.

There are certain rules for them.

A Soulstone allows you to transfer all your skillpoints in any given skill from one character to another character on the same account.

A Soulstone is tied to your account, so there is no point in buying or selling one, as it only works on the original account it was redeemed with.
Green Soulstones were a pre-order item with the Samurai Empire expansion. They can also be claimed by purchasing a ‘legacy token’ from : http://store.origin.com
Blue Soulstones were a pre-order item with the Eighth Age Special Edition.
Red Soulstones can be claimed as a veteran reward at the end of the first year.
