Which One Would you Like to Have: a Lamborghini or a Toyota?

I know it is a bit exaggregating to make an analogy of UO vs another MMOPG with millions of players using Lamborghini vs Toyota, but here is the point:what's wrong with a relative smaller number of player population?

The housing spots are widely avialable, the competitions for resources (commodities, high end spawns, etc.) are less intensive, the number of griefers is less... I remember in the old days when UO got 200k+ players, people lined up to kill the solen queen, or spent millions of gold to buy a small plot, or wait for hours at peerless entrance...

Being smaller has some limitations - less dev resources, fewer or smaller expansion, etc. But the content of UO is so rich and deep that most of the players know only a little about it. Intead of developing huge expansions every few years, it may be better to focus on make the content more elegant, fresh and interesting with smaller expansions - a pvp dueling contest system, a more robust and balanced crafting system, a more challenging pvm dugon where you go in naked and have to fight your way out, a puzzle quest similar to the ones used in power crystal event, a bug fix pass to remove as many bugs as possible... These smaller expansions only require a few dedicated dev members (like we have now) but they will make the game much more enjoyable.

Apple only has 6% market share in PC but it has a much stronger brand name than any other computer maker. When Steve Job came back to Apple a few years ago, Apple was on the verge of extinction. At that time, he said something like "Apple can be a Cadillac of computers". Well, UO right now is like Nissan or Ford. To become a Lamborghini, it has a long way to go. But it doesn't have to become Toyata to be successful and enjoyable.

Uh...Toyota's are more dependable than Lamborghini's...

You don't see Lamborghini with cars that have over 1,000,000 miles on them...

Hmmm since you asked... I drive a pickup truck. It's hard to haul anything larger than a 6 pack in a Lambo. So, Toyota it would be. Now if I could instantly sell the Lambo I'd take it, sell it and buy my truck and a nice Mercedes and have quite a bit left over for all kinds of mischief!

I'm a Chevy man myself. Never had a Chevy that gave me problems.

Ford, Dodge, Toyota, Mitsubishi yeah....but never Chevy. All the rest break down too much and I can do without 'em.

Unless it's a 71 Hemi Dodge Challenger RT/SE.....

who needs a pretty car when you can have a fun one... I have a friend that drives a 70's era heavy body van... That thing is insane, and I would never drive it, but it has character. He's known for doing very bizarre things like driving it over snow banks and off road. I'm amazed he hasn't totaled it yet, but I figure he will sooner or later. I asked him how it does on emmissions inspections and he said "it's exempt". But anyway... I guess his draw to that ugly vehicle is the same as my draw to UO.

My car, on the other hand, is really not that exciting. 96 subaru impresa. On the bright side, it's reliable for the most part. I haven't had to take it to the shop for anything aside from standard maintenance for a few years. That's pretty good consdiering I used to drive like a moron in that thing when I was a kid (100+ mph and 10k miles between oil changes... very stupid). I suspect if I hadn't run it so hard when I was younger it would last me another decade. The cheapest car you can buy is the one you already own...

hehe, sorry...

...as for the OP, I prefer less crowding by nature. So I'm not worried about lower subscribtion figures, as long as UO is up and running. When it was more populated I adapted to that and would find things to do that weren't as 'griefable'.

It is nice, however, to meet new people that are genuine/nice. I don't want larger subscription numbers just for larger subscription numbers.

I'm happy with the less 'sparkly shiney' UO.

Well, if you can't turn around and sell one for more than the other, then this is kind of like a personality test...

do you want 'form(Blingy Lamborghini)' or 'function(Work truck/car)'

I'll generally choose 'function'

Depends on who's paying for repairs & maintenance, and if the Lamborghini is the cost of a Toyota, or the Toyota is the cost of a Lamborghini... hehe.

Of course, in RL, if I could afford the Lamborghini and wanted a Toyota too, I'd just got pay cash for one.

I just want to say being small may not be that bad. Once UO becomes more elegant and enjoyable, players will come back.

I think most UO players would choose function... we're playing a 10 yr old game because it rocks, not because the graphics are amazing.

Hah! I know a couple women I'd like you to tell that too!

I don't mind UO being small...
I am quite small in RL!

As for more players...
The first step is to get more people to even 'try' UO. I have a feeling that will most likely come from the KR client.
From that point it'll all depend on if the 'tryer' gets enjoyment out of playing. For some people 'enjoyment' consists of 'Blingy Lamborghini'/'Sparkly Shinies'. I'm sure some of those type of people won't even give UO a try. The ones that do may not enjoy the freedom we have in UO, some people need/like to be told what to do. Frankly I'm not too worried about bringing those type of people into UO.

I'm sure UO will never compare numbers-wise with the 'larger' MMOs out there, but that doesn't bother me one bit.

No wonder you are playing UO.

The subscription for UO is similar to most MMOPGs or even cheaper.

Well I own a Subaru Outback, but guess what? It's not a party mobile, more often than not it's just me and my wife in the car, not going to turn any heads.

I am sick of the argument, pretty over functional... It's a rhetorical question.

The real question is why dont we have pretty AND functionality.

Id still take the Toyota. Imagine the cost of a minor service on the Lam! Just the cost of putting new tyres on it would kill me.

As somone who owns a Toyota irl, and my father has a Ferrari, (i know its not the same, but the princible is). I like my low matienence car. hehe.

Well I have owned Jeeps, Chevy 4x4 V8 pickups, Toyota "HILUX" pickups, Toyota T100, Tercel and Toyota Siena's, Volvo sedans, Mazda sedans, Ford sedans and driven Ford F350 and F450 pickups and vans.

I loved the Chevy 4x4. At the time I worked a job where I was driving between those big antennas you see in the So. Cal desert (the big ones they point out into space) and was doing almost 100% off-road. After 24,000 miles the front axel broke (My fault doing 55mph on a very ugly dirt road) But that was a great truck.

I replaced the Chevy with a Jeep...man what a POS the Jeep was. What was NOT broken on that thing....I pushed the piece of junk Jeep to the dealer and sold the scrape metal for a real truck.

I traded the Jeep in for the HILUX, put 380,000 miles on it in the next 11 years, and traded the HILUX in for the T100, that I still have 10 years later. But since I am full time VPN now, the T100 only has 130,00 miles on it, so I will be driving it for a few more years....and I make well over 6 figures a year, so the T100 is a choice, not a "only thing I can afford"

Ok, back to UO.

To me UO is a lot like my old HILUX, not so pretty, but darn it started every morning faithfully, haukled what I wanted, and never gave me problems...but was not nearly as pretty or as glamorous or as fast as the other pickups, but I got excellent service out of the HILUX.

UO is entertainment. I pay to be entertained. And for the last 10 years (124 months according to my profile) I have gotten good value for my money. I have been entertained.
And like my T100, I have a choice to play more glamorous games like WoW, and I do try them, but UO is always my staple.

I`d just love it if when peaple quit the game they didn`t come to the forums for a "goodbye stupid game" thread, like anybody cares.

Have you never seen a car bra before? That one's even a custom one with the Monte Carlo logo on the front...

But yeah, that car was crashed. It's the same one that I had my big accident in. The entire rear of the car, including everything behind the rear seat, was cut off then replaced.

Well, I have a 06 Porsche a 02 BMW and a 97 Jeep Wrangler (my very first car). The Porsche is a summer car; the BMW is the winter car the Jeep is used about 3 weeks out of a year.

I bought the Jeep because that was all I could afford back then (6 cylinders and the fun factor). I bought the BMW because of the customer service. The experience at the BMW dealer was great and the car met all my need.

When it came to the Porsche, I was choosing between the Lexus and the Porsche (diff. car but I like both equally). The customer service I received at the Lexus dealer was not that great. They lost a sell.

When the Jeep was all I could afford, I shopped for the price. When I can afford luxury, I want better customer service. There are tons of cars out there that compete for my $$. There are not enough differences among the top end vehicles to make me choose one over the other. The dealer with the best service is the one winning the cash.

There is something to be said about the game also. When UO was the only game in town, I had no choice. Now there are a lot of other games out there and UO doesn’t stand out enough to earn more than my one account worth.

"A car bra ???? your kidding me right ????"

No, not kidding. We put those on cars here for the sole purpose of protecting the front end so we don't have to paint it later on from rock chips and bug goo that eats through the paint, especially here in Texas with the "love bugs" that we get in the summertime. They'll eat right though clear coat paint in a matter of a day or 2 if you don't clean it off right away. I wouldn't own a car in Texas without one.

"Danm didnt know you had an accident , sorry to hear that m8 , good your ok"

Yep, that's what forced me into retirement. I think the car fared better than I did though. That's a very recent pic of it and it's getting close to being 6 yrs old with 95k miles on it now.

That car there is the best kind there is too, with none better........paid for.

Lamborghini vs Toyota

[/ QUOTE ]
but ... but ... what if I don't drive?

I have no fear of empty space - the thinning of the urban sprawl has allowed more choice, more growth without the developers having to add anything. I like that there is a respectable chance that our posts here will be read (or at least skimmed) by the actual developers working on the game. I like that there is such a diversity of gaming cultures in this one world that no two people are really playing the same game (even if we sometimes step on each others' toes vying for attention to our pet peeves).

The nature of the MMORPG community means that this is an industry overflowing with imagination with wild ideas rocking the marketplace all the time. I have to admit that a part of me wants to leap into every new world just to see what's being done, but on the whole I'd rather set roots and just get to know one world well as it grows and matures (well ok, admittedly a third part of me desperately wants to build my own world, but I seem to have neither the infinite hours nor the army of artists and coders willing to implement my every whim).

I suppose what I'm saying is the UO is like a Volkswagon Bus ... a bit quaint to some, a little tricky finding a mechanic for, but full of nooks and crannies and something you can just live in no matter what the world throws at you.
