Is this the place?

Questions like why are raw goods spawned in shops, and not entirely player produced.

Well I mean, they functionally are. What possible use could someone have for npc items? Other than like bags, wine, books, and a few other unimportant things.

There are many items that are central to the game from the beginning.
It was about economy. My first chr made bows and sold them to npc's before he had enough skill to fight anything with different loot.
The npc shops are part of the virtual world experience. Before we had the LRC property in armor we HAD to have reagents cast spells. With npc mages in their shops there would be no regs. That's a game killer.
The economy was driven by crafting and hunting. Before power gaming and buying items for real cash changed the game to what it is now, most of the economy if not all was player driven

UO has many unused places in the lands of each facet. With 99.9% of the population recalls, sacred journeys or gates to where they want to go most of the land is unused. Back in the day you had to travel by horse to a gate or use moonstones to get to one facet or another. Which leads into some ideas more for RP purposes .....

1) NPC farm lands can be rented weekly (gold sink idea) by players for growing of food/fruit or use fertile dirt (from earth elementals) and grow mage regeants. These can be sold to NPC merchants or kept for personal use. Wine could be made out of grapes/peaches/pears/berries that are grown and can be sold to Taverns.

2) With a little coding change they could update and make animal pens which animals can be ONLY herded( again bring back a dead skill) into and be only used to get hides to make special backpacks and special bags only. These can be sold to NPC merchants or kept for personal use.

3) Have different areas designated each week for hunting. This keeps hunters busy placing traps for special game. The trapped animal can be used to make special armor that can be sold to NPC merchants only or be worn for deco purposes by hunters. Devs could impliment a quest system like the High Sea expansion like they do for lobsters and such.

The list can go on and on but most likely if they even added ideas like this it be a booster pack instead of a free update.
