Where are my bonded pets?

Ok I have not played for a long while, but decided to come back as I always loved the game.
Last week I logged out in my house and logged in the next day and my giant beetle had disappeared. I logged out and back in, checked the stable, but he had vanished. Today I was chopping trees outside my house using my pack horse, suddenly he just vanished, he didn't wander off, I searched for him to no avail. Please tell me what's going on:mad:

Yes, pets vanish. It happened to me a couple of times, i reported the bug in game.

Sometimes relogging makes them re-appear near you, sometimes it doesn't work.

I have always been able to recover them with the ball of pet summoning.

Also pets can start running at paragon speed in one direction (always south-west, for some reason). It happens very often when they die but i noticed that it can rarely happen also if they are alive.

In this case though, relogging always works or you can simply go where they died and run south-west until you find it (usually stuck against a tree or a rock but once i found my greater dragon at the very end of the map).

If you log out and your pack animal has items in it's backpack then it won't log out with you, might be what happened with your beetle?

Items with Special Abilities

Crystal Ball of Pet Summoning

This Crystal Ball allows you to summon a linked pet to your location. Can be found as loot on Black Solen Queens and Red Solen Queens.

Or often, you can find player vendors selling them.

Charged up by using Powder of Translocation

Won't help recover an already lost pet, of course, but really good insurance for the ones you still have. Pretty much essential items for all my tamers, I really recommend getting some.

another issue is staying logged in until the server down. the server down will NOT log you out and therefore your pet will stay logged in. when this happens, your character will disappear, but the pet will stay in the world and begin to lose it's happiness and eventually go free on you. to avoid this situation, always log yourself out before the server down, or stable your pets, or mount ridable ones.

Pack animals especially need to be EMPTY or you need to mount that beetle.

Anything in their pack will keep them from logging out with you.

So always be sure to empty their packs, stable if you can and avoid logging with anything in them if possible.

This is as designed.

As for them just "vanishing" are you sure you weren't near a server line? Or that some "monster" didn't decide your pack animal looked yummy?

I know my pack animals will run off at the first opportunity to go get themselves killed... and sometimes this can be a monster 2 or 3 screens away that captures their attention.

Even if you don't have your pet "guarding" you... it can run off to kill something... trying to be the hero... often it spells their doom.

Only pet I ever "lost" was one of the Grizzled Mares. I have yet to replace it because I'm always afraid to lose it again.

My beetle was locked inside my house with me when I logged out. Door shut and set to private.
As for my pack horse, well one minute he was there, I had just dumped some logs in him. The next minute there is no sign of him. I searched the area but he was nowhere to be found.
I never experienced this problem when I used to play. Had these pets for years.
As for the summoning ball, well trying to find a vendor with anything for sale would be a pleasant surprise.
The land is so empty these days, such a shame.

There was a time you could log out with a pack animal and it would log out with you even if it had items in it's backpack.

This was changed. If there is anything in a pack animal's pack, it WILL NOT log out.

This.. if you are mounted on the beetle it will be fine full or not but as stated if you are not mounted it will be gone on log in the next day

as for the pet summoning globes they can be gotten in the solen hives and found on the queens if I remember correctly

I don't have a tamer but my resource guys use beetles and packys.. I find it incredibly amusing that they ALL seem to think they are greater dragons.

Sorry to hear about the pets disappearing.. I'd be mad.

You are right Ludes, I am mad. These pets do belong to my resource guy. Makes me scared to spend the time gathering resources to craft with, if my pack animal going to disappear with a full pack, as happened yesterday. Never a gamsemaster around to reply to me in game

Ok first off on the pets owner please look to see what your Status bar says for followers.
This should be for the blue bug 3/5. For the packie owner should look like 1/5.
If both say 0/5. the pets are off your characters conection. You can look in the stables to see if when you logged out that they might have been stabled for you as has happened when the system is working correctly.
Now when you logged out in your home with your bug had you fed it ? Was it empty in its holding bag? If you were gone for more then the allotted time for a pet to go wild, that pet will go wild drop contents of its holding pouch and then a short time later will vanish.
The items in its holding pouch are on a timer and will vanish also after the time limit and under house decay rules.
Packie might have been targeted by monster, have had lag make it look as if a pet vanished only to find it had not been under the same lag as I and was often attacked and killed a few screens from where I was. Now if the pack animal was bonded it will show up if you log out and back in *I highly recomend doing this in your home as the pet will take off like a bullet for heavens knows where...*
Pet balls are the best and safest way to keep your pet on a leash. As noted above they are easy to aquire and maintaine your brood.

GM's though few and far between are out there but in light of the many games they handle it can take hours to get one to help you.
Hope I gave you a bit of help here kiddo.. gl

Melliandra, I'm wondering if the following might be what happened with your pack horse that bolted as soon as you dumped some logs into its backpack. (And by the way, in case you missed this change while you were gone from UO, you can now chop logs with your axe and they'll turn into boards. Don't need carpentry anymore to do that with the better quality wood either. If your lumberjack can chop the logs, he/she can also cut those logs into boards!! No more carrying saws and no more needing to have carpentry to cut those heavy logs into boards.)

Okay, back to this hypothetical scenario:

1. You logged off earlier in the day while your faithful pack horse still had something in his pack. Your character went off to La La land and does whatever happy lil characters do in La La land, while your pack horse was left alone, cold, scared, hungry, and still loaded down with a heavy weight in your house or inn or wherever else you "abandoned" him. He didn't automatically get sent to the stablemaster to care for while you were gone because you forgot to clean out his backpack!

2. Sometime later, you logged back in and saw your trusty old pack horse still standing there and decided, "Let's go chop down some trees, old and faithful friend!" Unbeknownst to you, old and faithful friend was mighty upset with you for leaving him alone all that time with some of your possessions to worry about and with straps still chafing his sides and belly. His happiness had slid way down the critter Loyalty scale, maybe past the neutral zone and into that area where pets are contemplating, "Should I kick the snot out of her when she comes back or just take off?!" (Go here if you would like a rather more technical explanation of the critter Loyalty scale: Professions - The Tamer: Animal Lore.) Did you reach into your pocket, pull out an apple, polish it up a bit and offer it to old and faithful friend as a thank you for his fine service of late? No, you did not!

3. You recall off to your favorite wooded area and old and faithful friend is sent along with you by strong forces of magic and a still rather tenuous bond that exists between you and him. His natural instincts still haven't gotten the better of him yet and at least for a few seconds he submits to your desires.

4. Pulling out your axe, you come to a fine looking specimen of a tree and proceed to hack away at it until you're completely overloaded with beautious logs. Turning to old and faithful friend, you unceremoniously dump the whole pile of them into his pack, and clucking your tongue, you say, "Follow me old and faithful friend! We have more trees to chop down!"

5. At this point old and faithful friend has JUST HAD IT. No apples. No nice long drink of cool water at the stable. No thank you's. Just more damn stuff to carry! He's outta there, not even gonna give you a parting kick.

6. And so, old and faithful friend shall nevermore be known as YOUR old and faithful friend. He's decided to take his chance at freedom, even if it means he will forevermore roam the land carrying those packs you once tied onto his back. Yes, eventually he'll drop that last load of logs and whatever else you left him with that last time you went to La La Land. But he's had it with two-legged creatures. Good riddance! If anyone in the future wants his company, they will have to tame him and treat him exceptionally well to overcome his confusion about two-legged creatures.

The End.

(Anyway, the moral of the story is don't log out and leave your pack animals behind with stuff in their pack and FEED THEM once in a while to show your appreciation! Feeding them usually restores them to a Wonderfully Happy state. Bossing them around when they're in a neutral or negative state may just cause them to slide further down the Loyalty scale until they give up on you and go wild. You can retame them yourself, even without taming skill, if you can catch them. But once you have them retamed, you must feed them to get them out of the "Confused" state, give them a command, and then wait a week for them to form a new bond with you.)

Lag, death, going wild because not empty these are all known and "logical" behaviors but let's be clear here: there is a bug in the game that makes living, happy, peaceful and unloaded pet simply disappear. Witnessed three times and reported once. Unfortunately i cannot reproduce it with a step by step procedure that would help finding the code that is broken: it just happens.

When it happens you result having no followers.

And now that i remember, it is not a new issue. It is very old cause i had it before to leave (four years ago or something). I clearly remember once that one of my greater dragons disappeared, after a while i took one out of the stable, i relogged and i had two greater dragons following me. I was able to control one of the two while the other one didn't respond to commands but followed me and was fully functional (defended itself and aggroed negative karma creatures). Reported as an unreproducible exploit (because i actually fought with two greater dragons) at that time.

Of course having no way to reproduce it can make it quite hard to fix.

I've had it happen to me twice.

First time it was my Proxymus Dragon (8mil)... I was alive (and unmounted) and I crashed inside someone's house and when I logged back in the pet was gone, 0 followers, the pet was nowhere around, logging in and out several times didn't fix it, and it wasn't in my stables. 8m down the drain.

2nd time it happened to me it was my Dread Warhorse (30mil)... I was alive, unmounted, and crashed at fel yew gate. When I logged back in I was still alive, my pet was gone, I had 0 followers. The pet was not in the stables when I checked there, and it didn't come back to me after logging in/out several times. My pet ball didn't work either.. Luckily I spent about a half an hour looking for it (and asking everyone if they had seen it) and someone told me they saw it standing against the front steps of someone's house... I was lucky to get it back. Still bonded.

Both times the pet was gone from my follower slots and didn't return by logging in/out, and both times it didn't show up in my stable slots either...

Both times it was a bonded pet.

I've had it happen to me twice and it wasn't any common newbie mistake. The pets disappeared from follower slots, and it wasn't because they went wild.

Radun, this is exactly what happened, on both occasions, pets had been fed, both were bonded. I logged out and back in but they still did not appear. Checked stable several times and still nothing. Checked follower slots and still showing nothing.
I do appreciate everyones input and I guessI jst have toaccept there is a bug and they have gone for good. Not too much of an issue as they are such lowly beasts, but not much fun if it is a much better pet.
Are there ever any games masters in game these days? If there are, they never seem to answer:rant2:
