So after reading about the new player quests in KR I figure its been a while, and I would give it a try. So I go about installing KR... This alone almost makes me want to quite UO. It installs and patches on my Sony Vaio Desktop, but when I actually get in game there is nothing... I can see my health bar and names appear on screen as people run by, but the play window is nothing but a big tan blur of nothingness. My wife has a brand new dell laptop with windows Vista. Well KR refuses to work on her laptop, it will install, but only get about half way through the patch session then say cannot be completed, press ok or cancel. Ans yes I have tried everything like clearing out the patch folder and retrying, NOTHING works. Fine, Ill make some room and install it on my Dell XPS gaming laptop. It took about an hour to install, and then about 17 hours to patch, no kidding. I started it yesterday, and had to leave it over night. This morning it finally finishes, and Im excited to get on and see how it has improved.
Once I log in, I am immediately disappointment with the graphics... no surprise here, I was pretty much expecting that. Nothing is colored or proportioned right, but I knew that would be the case, so I suck it up and am still determined to play and see how it runs. Well, apparently you cant go up a ladder in KR and NONE of the ladders in my house will allow me to climb them. Fine, forget about anything that has to do with houseing, Ill move on to gameplay. I have never had more trouble playing a game in my life. I cant pick things up off the ground without using all names... even when the item highlights and I try dragging it to my pack... nothing works. Most items wont even highlight when you mouse over them unless you get the one perfect pixel in the right spot, but when you go to click your mouse moves a fraction and the item is no longer highlighted. GRRRRR. Well, ok, the item art sucks, I already know that. Lets check out the map my GM and a few others have complimented. What the hell am I looking at? I cant tell where I am, and in the quest the lady says something is marked, go to it on the map, but she doesnt say HOW it is marked or what Im looking for, and for the life of me I cant tell what is what. Fine, it all sucks, but there has got to be something good about KR... The customizable interface... lets give that a shot. Once I finally figure out how to open the options, I click on legacy art hoping that will improve things... and boom, not only does KR crash, but this is what it does to my computer... It makes everything look like Im running on an original Nintendo, not a Dell XPS Gaming system.

I had to restart my computer, and luckily it started up normal, so I figure, eh, its a crappy buggy client, that was bound to happen eventually lets try it again. Three times in a row, I crash and have to restart my computer, the following 2 times without even messing with the settings ingame.
I finally last long enough to cast sacred journey to go fight the Dark Knight, and win... and I dont even get to choose my reward... I get an auto pick of a crappy item I dont even want and have NO use for.

Well, Its my own fault. Every 6 months or so I fall for the hype and give KR another try, and every time I have this kind of Hellish experience. I love UO and usually recommend it to ANYBODY who shows the slightest interest in a game, but man, after trying KR even I want to quite. I never thought I would see the day but I have finally found a program that is more unintuitive and un-user friendly then iTunes, lol.

Anyway, I needed to vent and blow off some steam, But in fairness, I would like to know what I am missing. I know there are people out there who are running KR. Did I do something wrong? Is there something that I over looked that makes the terrible graphics and the horrid interface all worthwhile. Please, tell me how this is in any way an enjoyable experience? Im not being sarcastic, I really want to know if there is a way to make this client playable.

Uh, thats not the fault of KR. Its your graphics driver. Don't blame the game, blame your Dell 'gaming' system.

First off, in the graphics options, turn on legacy graphics... After that, you might want to try the "Bitter-Black Enhanced" custom user interface available in the KR forum. Lots of great info there on the type of problems you are having. KR does work well for me. I use it all the time without the BBE-interface - with few problems.

Ya , I figured it would have something to do with my GC. I don't have the specs off hand for any of the 3 computers I mentioned. I guess I was just a little too optimistic with all the talk of "We want to make sure lower end computers can still run UO". I figured mine would probably fall in the mid to low end range. Guess they don't, I'm probably down near the "That's not a computer, my grandpas pocket watch has a better graphics card then all 3 of your systems put together" end of things.

***Sighs and gives up the dream that at least one of his two new laptops would allow him to play a new client of a 12 year old game, and crawls back to the old faithful 2D client, while realizing he must be one of those people who cant afford a top end system and is therefore holding back the progression of UO***

wow. how nasty was that? it sure doesn't make me want to try KR. I love the 2d client and I won't switch.

KR doesn't take all that much. 1GHZ/512MB RAM runs it fine with an onboard intel card.
