I had this problem with Vista. Went into program files to find the patcher and ran as admin. It's not windows 7, but it worked for me.

I install to a non-UAC protected directory, so there's never any of this mumbo-jumbo "run as administrator" jiggery-pokery.

I was having the same problem on my new laptop. Couldn`t download past 7.0.3. Then I downloaded UOA from tugsoft. Launched UOA & it patched UO after that. Even if you don`t use UOA try launching UO through it.

Disable UAC and you're golden.

Windows 7 is vastly superior to Windows XP...and I say this as someone who used to be a Windows XP fanboy.

I set just about everything 'run as adminstrator', I'm happy with my windows 7.

I agree with Petra. I run most everything as administrator and I'm happy. I like windows 7... was a bit of a bugger to get used to, and it's still challenging to find things... but I'm getting there and I like it.

I love my XP machines, but Windows 7 really is the best. Especially as the latest IE doesn't even support XP and for once Microsoft have made an IE that matches up to Chrome and Firefox.

Regarding patching, Right click on UO and properties and click 'Run this program as administrator'.

I had to change my account to an administrator account, and completely disable UAC to get some things working on my computer. So Win 7 is clearly no more secure for me than Win XP was. However, I ran Win XP for years with no issues, and in all other ways Win 7 64 is superior to Win XP.

Yeah, right. Who told you that? Microsoft?

IE still falls short in so many ways compared to FF.

To the OP ... Admin mode works like a charm. I followed these instruction which were posted on the Tech forum here on UO Stratics and it works fine:

1. find the UO folder, right click on client.exe and select "properties".
2. Go in the Compatibility Tab, check "Run as administrator".
3. I also selected the option to run it in compatibility mode with Windows XP service pack .
4. You not only need to do this for client.exe but also for uo.exe and uopatch.exe

UAC isn't the only enhanced security in Windows 7 over Windows XP.

Disabling UAC and using an administrator account effectively disables most of the security features built into Windows 7. I can't remember whether Windows Defender was added to Windows XP or not, if it wasn't then there is that.

There's also a much enhanced firewall, security enhancements in the OS, the ability to use newest IE (more secure) and other things.

Windows 7 is superior in any regard.

True the firewall has a lot more configuration options, but I only use IE if I have no other option. But ya, we agree on the basics, Windows 7 is a better OS, and certainly the best version of Windows so far, for a raft of reasons.
