What was so bad about TD client?

Heya,

Been reading the expansion thread, and TD client has been getting some bad feedback...

I dunno if time has made my memories golden, but don't recall TD being such a bad client. I mean yea, when you ran it looked like the char had a stick in his/her arse, but still.

What I remember is that you could use UO-Assist which is great, you could use 2D macros (if I remember correctly), UOAM worked with it (Cause of Assist). So basically it was really easy to adapt compared to KR/SA.

But there had to be something very terrible in that client I quess but I just can't recall what that was. Could someone remind me?

The art was beyond horrid was the issue I think most people had. The function was lovely.

The avatar artwork was hideous (a trend, unfortunately, that they have not changed... they even changed the avatar twice or three times in Third Dawn and failed to make them look good each and every time; KR and SA have not gotten any better).

The real problem with Third Dawn is that it was not the best implementation that it could have been with regard to 3D graphics. On the other hand, the Third Dawn client did everything the 2D client did -- and more. That was, unfortunately, the biggest failing with the KR client. SA is much better by that standard.

In the end, Third Dawn got off to a very rocky start, and so it was just never widely adopted. Most people never went back to it, particularly after they made Ilshenar available to the 2D client (that was really the nail in 3D's coffin, because there was no reason for anyone who didn't like it in the first place to go back and try it again).

Truly, it was not a horrible client, it was just suffering from horrible graphics (or, as someone in another thread has put it, it was suffering from the lack of an acceptable artistic style [aka: graphics]).

From a business perspective, it never caught on in terms of popularity. Also, it still didn't "look" or "feel" like a modern, WoW-style MMO game client.
