What UO and WAR message boards have in common

I found this very interesting that this topic is talked about on WAR's message boards over at mmorpg. It's the same topic i've read on these boards here about UO. I am completely against shard mergeing. However, I find it interesting this topic comes up from a game that was just released a month ago. Compared to ours which has been around over a decade. Here are a few quotes from WAR players about their game.

"The game is so empty, that you rarely even run into any Order players. It is so bad that I felt like I did when I tried to return to EQ. There just wasn't anyone around."

"Remedy: Merge those fricken servers so we all have a decent population to play with. Otherwise I know I'm not paying 15 bucks a month and not getting anything they promised, which I believe was supposed to be a pretty heavy dose of exciting RVR PVP. Bah"

"yeah the server I play on is a bit of a ghost town now too, I guess when they get some free server transfers happening people might flock to 2-3 main servers and we will start to see more pq being do"

"I left before the end of the first month. WAR has been a huge disapointement to me. The lack of players is what's killed it for me. I had a blast in BETA, always TONS of peoples to play with, to do PQ, scenario queue we're short. Now on launch they release way too many servers and spread the population all over. That's the major mistake they made. They should have released maybe 10 servers let them fill and when population reached maximum on all of them, open 1-2 more"

They canfix this on WAR , but UO , no way to many players would cry , sadly its what UO needs until they can finally figure a way out to atleast double or current player base...

shelf presence..... advertising... works wonders for the "10 million" WOW subs. they have.

Until they offered free character transfers between any server and somehow managed to code it properly without opening another 500 dupe methods this game will not be a community. It will still have ghost servers and 2-3 real servers.

Shards were created thinking this game would have that many people to fill them. We clearly only have enough population to fill maybe 3-4. Simply downsize shards, open up more housing space, and problem solved.

I mean there's still reserved spaces ALLLL over malas that can fit hundreds of houses that they saved for promo castles and promo house rewards that they never will give out. So thats just that many more players that wont have a house due to insufficient land.

Tends to be the standard for game design now a days epically huge worlds, ignoring the fact that it will make human interaction difficult.

UO for example, we have WAY too much space right now. Mondain's legacy was a step more in the right direction, but I for one wouldn't even add dungeons, I would just improve the dungeons we have and add a slew of things just out in the wild.

Well, one of UO's biggest assets is also it's stickler in an instance like this.

In War, go ahead and merge them you loose nothing by having your shard merged with the added benefit of a larger player base. In UO, you have Player housing. I think it's phenomenally great that UO allows players to add their houses to the existing landscape to add to the shards atmosphere. However it's also what holds the ability to do shard merges back. The only real way to do it without pissin 'everyone' off is the freeze housing on 2 shards indefinatly until the houses spots on one, were freeded up on another then merge (houses and everything). Which isn't all that practical.

In something like War, maybe they over stepped their bounds in the expected number of subscribers, but combining shards/servers there wouldn't have the same sorta ramifications as it would on UO.

Wow, that's funny. I read an article on Stratics a week ago that said that WAR was a possible WoW killer. Oh well, another one bites the dust.

It could be because they have 55 servers. Anyways the server I play Azazel always has folks on it, mostly pvping.

Rubbish. Space is never a problem - common cause is the problem. Events deal with that. Mechanics can be created that amplify an encounter and its rewards based on the number of participants.

(of course I'm biased because I like going off on long lonely explorations and have been rationing my ignorance, keeping away from many corners of the land do I will always have somewhere new to visit if I need that experience some evening)
