What to do?

Can anyone spare any idea of what a new player or someone with limit experience returning to UO can do? Things that might be fun to get into the game?

So far I've just messed around Haven for a bit but outside of the bank it seems kinda lifeless. Why do people feel the need to drop their junk on the ground around the bank and stand in front of the door or try to give new players items (don't really feel comfortable with that to be honest)?

I've started a Paladin. Wanted magic but also wanted to wield a sword so it seemed the easiest choice. So used to mmorpgs at the very least showing me some direction after the tutorial is done. Would like to quest but so far all I see are quest that require me to increase my skills. Thinking of just dropping those though and just leveling them up by giving the trainer money. Less of a grind that way I think.

Is there any interesting quest system one can take advantage of? Any interesting quest lines?

Welcome,

At first UO will be overwhelming with the things to do. It will take some time to get into it all. You spend too much time in New Haven and i think its time to explore the world. :)

First to find more people you will need to use the moongate to Malas/ Luna. Most people are there at a bank most of the time when not out hunting. Its a town where every NPC shop is close and also surrounded with alot of player vendors.

You should explore the old lands in Trammel and find the old dungeons. Despise and Shame are good at first levels to sharpen a new players skills. Also when you fight in those dungeons you get points (can't see them). Eventualy a artifact will drop in your backpack. The complete Virtue suit is very nice to own cause it give Max in all resists.

Try to meet some people on your shard. It will also help if you post on your shard forum on stratics with a little introduction and expectation.

You can do whatever you like here. You free to try things out. Don't be afraid to go out and die. Its the best way to learn :)
There champ spawns , The Gauntlet,Player events, UO ungoing event. You need to find good places to make gold. There alot of items to get to build good suits. You can craft and BoDs to collect, find a nice house spot and build a nice house the way you want it. You can join faction to PvP. You can be even a thief. I can go on for a while. UO is what you make of it. :)

The only thing thats important is to have fun.

Try finding a guild to join. There are alot of small guilds made up of players who have played this game for many years that are always willing to help a newer person. They can help you out as far as skill training, hunting tips, and getting you on the right path, but just as there are those that are willing to help, there are also those guilds that get pleasure from guilding new people just to kill them.

If you want to raise your skills quickly to 50.0, you can buy most of them up to 40.0 from the trainers in New Haven. In order to do this you cannot have a New Haven Skill Gain quest active. Once you have bought your skills to 40.0, take the quest for that skill and go to the "enhaced skill gain area" that the quest giver tells you to. Get your skill to 50.0 and complete the quests. This will be a very fast method of getting your skills to 50.0, this will be especially usefull to you as a paladin, because the Healing skill can be a cumbersome skill to level up.

You can go to Heartwood in Yew, there are some hunting quests that can take you all over the lands of Britainia for monster kills. You can make your own quests too, by saying "Today I am going explore ___ area". One quest you should undertake is getting a house. Architect NPCs will sell you a House Placement Tool (looks like a spyglass). Buy only one, they are blessed so as long as they are in the top level of your backpack you will never lose it if you die. The tool will tell you how much it costs for what size house. Find a good spot to place one and now you have a base of operations, and a place to store more things. All of your characters on that shard can log out there (you can only have one house per account, so place it on the shard you will play the most). You can begin to store resources for crafting there and can easily transfer items between characters too. Since you cannot mark as a paladin, find someone that can, and politely ask them to mark you at least 2 near your new home. You will be able to travel to those runes with Sacred Journey, now you can easily get home. Put the rune in a Rune Book (they are also blessed) and set it as default (you can cast off the book, by targeting it with Sacred Journey, rather than opening it and casting off the SJ button) and it will take you to the default location. Other good Runes to have are a bank rune and moongate rune.

Check the Shard Forums for your shard to see if something is going on. Welcome to Britainia!!!

Stayin Alive,

Also, if you can access Mondain's legacy, go check out Heartwood - the guards, expeditionists and some of the other NPCs give quests to kill a number of creatures of a certain type. Some of them are easy, some of them are much harder. The loot for the quests isn't much, but it does give you a sense of doing something, and reason to explore certain parts of the world.

Thanks. I guess the biggest hurdle I'm having is that the game really does just drop you with no direction. It's great you can do so many things but not knowing where to actually start is overwhelming at times. Not to mention it doesn't help to have some people just offering stuff without so much as a hello first. Though some have at least asked though.

This is one game I'm thinking I'm going have to spend a lot of time on sites while playing at the same time to figure out where things are and what not to attack. For example I have no clue at all at how to get spells and seem to find nothing related to it in game at the moment.

Spell scrolls for Magery can be bought from the NPC mages. Some will only sell level 1 spell scrolls, some 1-2, some 1-3 and a few rare ones 1-4. Completing the Inscription quest in New Haven will get you an undead slayer spellbok with most of these and a number of usefull higher level spells in it.

Necromancy has a quest that will get you a full spellbook in New Haven, or individual scrolls can be looted (see below) to fill a book bought (or crafted) empty.

Chivalry books can be bought in Luna, and I think New Haven from the Chivalry instructor. They come full, and have no scrolls.

Bushido & Ninjitsu books can be gotten from the Ronin & Elite Ninja respectively (which are typically too hard for a low-level to kill - but if you can get one near one of the Monk NPCs in Tokuno, the MONK will typically make short work of the malcontent, and you can then loot the corpse). I've never had to buy one, but they MIGHT be for sale from the appropriate NPCs.

Spellweaving's book is gained through a Heartwood quest, and comes with two spells. Two more spells are not found as scrolls, but added to the book via quest (one that summons pixies in Heartwood; the other, that allows you to summon imps, is gained in Sanctuary, which is a very bad place for a newbie to even attempt to go - except maybe as a ghost with no belongings). The other 12 scrolls (and scrolls of the 2 that come with the book) can be found as loot on Mondain's Legacy expansion monsters.

Some monsters (most notably Imps and Ratman mages) carry level 1-3 Magery scrolls, including the Necromancy scrolls that are similar in power.
Most monsters with scrolls carry level 4-7 Magery scrolls (and necromantic equivalents).
Both types can have the exorcism Necromancy scroll, which is useless outside Champ spawns and the Magincia thread turn-in event.
A FEW rare creatures carry scrolls level 1-7 (and occasionally a blank scroll). Examples include the Air Elemental (which has one blank-level 3, and 1 level 4-7 scroll).
Only a couple of normal creatures carry 8th level scrolls. These are the Meer Eternal in Ilshenar, and the Dark Father in the Doom Gauntlet. Some invasion bosses (most recently, the Crimson Dragon) carry these scrolls as well.

Treasure chests can have level 4-7 scrolls, and some of the lesser random -spawning containers (crates, boxes, barrels, kegs) can have level 1-3 or blank scrolls.

Magery Scrolls ONLY, from blank to level 8, can be found in the "Static" chests & crates in dungeons. You go in, unlock the chests, remove/trigger all the traps, then open them. They will either have junk in them (which may include scrolls), or be empty. If they have junk, remove the junk. Now, leave, and come back 20-30 minutes later, and new stuff will have spawned in the containers you opened (and emptied, if needed). In fact, before the introduction of the Meer, this was the ORIGINAL way said scrolls were introduced into the game.
