What is EA's stance on Gold selling for real money? (RMT) Because I know a few they need to ban.

There's this website, I won't say it's name yet, but they sell any kind of UO item you want, you want it, they'll sell it to you, they also sell any quantity of gold.

So is it alllowed to sell gold? What these people are doing is so out in the open, I even know which character they use to deliver the gold on one of the major servers. The GM's could catch these guys really easy and bust their whole operation, now my question is why don't they? I will help them with character names and information if I know they'll act on it.

UO has always had a permissive stance on allowing sales of ingame items (including gold) for real cash. It was due to the prices achieved for castles early in UO's career that brought the attention forward.

Personally, I think they should not only keep the standpoint, but create a system controlled by EA/Mythic that charged a fee for such sales, was tied to each players' account information and could be used to investigate to remove dupers and scriptors.

Before using ANY 3rd party auction site, I would ask the owners if they scan auctions for people who are posting an inordinate amount of items or commodities and report the findings to EA/Mythic. If they don't, I wouldn't do business with them (I don;t do business with any of them currently as it is, but the point remains).

There IS room to allow such sales WITHOUT them becoming a haven for cheaters, but it requires a dedicated staff.

EA should NOT sell gold.

This does not contradict my opinion that they should provide an out of game auction service due to one main difference.

Players selling gold through EA's website does NOT create any new gold in the game. The gold must be obtained by a player through gameplay.

EA selling gold would mean that they are creating gold in order to do so, which opens the "faucet" wide. That pretty much goes contrary to the closing of the faucet the devs have been doing over the past month or two.

Wow, we agree on something. EA selling gold is a bad IDEA. These gold sellers are there because there is a demand, if everyone hates them soo much, who is buying their gold?

My idea based on this is EA selling gold it CAN be more controlled , ( only a certain amout per day?) , plus the real money CAN be used to make UO better , flip side is it ends up in a players hands or maybe a sweat shop ( sarcasm)..I should have stated that more clearly sorry , but I must say there are bigger thing that need fixing..

Just a off topic question does everyone agree UO players should not/need have 100's of millions of gold??

I'm not convinced that this is true. Real-world profits push an increased pressure to exploit (or to blind oneself to the exploits of others). This in turn warps the development of the game for everyone.

Of course the flipside is that there is always a fraction of the population who will pay real world money for ingame stuff and you can't stop it just by telling them not to. There's simply no way to enforce a total ban.

To me, the trickle of tokens is the really the only viable middle ground I see. It lets people who absolutely must pay real money for ingame wealth to barter for it without directly dumping gold into the economy. And since all the real-world profits off the tokens goes to EA ... so even thouse who aren't taking part in the trade are benefiting from increased resources being generated for the game. The weak point in this theory is that not everyone can command the same price for their tokens ... there would almost have to be a separate in-game auction system for them to make it fair.

The problem is that the money comes at the cost of purposefully imbalancing the game.

By allowing players to do so (in a very tightly controlled setting) between themselves for a fee (the ebay model), they could get the same effect (extra game income) WITHOUT upsetting the current flow of resources into the game.

Just a off topic question does everyone agree UO players should not/need have 100's of millions of gold??

No, I don't agree. It is neither mine, yours, nor the devs' decision how much a player "should" have. That line of thinking has led to horrible times both inside and very definitely OUTSIDE of gaming.

A player (and by extension a person) should be able to make as much gold or money as they wish, desire, and put in the effort to do so, with one distinct caveat... that it is done LEGALLY (again, both in and out of game).

I agree with the statement, but I disagree with the sentiment that it cannot be done.

No, it won't be EASY to do, however an auction site that is run by EA/Mythic and DIRECTLY tied to player accounts would give them an inside tool to flag users who post inordinate amounts of resources, gold, or whatnot internally for investigation. Then after said investigation, if a player is found to be legit, no action would need to be taken. If a player is found to be an exploiter/cheater, then actions can be taken on that account.

But like I said, it would take a dedicated support staff to run the site, flag the usernames, conduct the investigations, and deliver the needed retribution.

Ebay did not have the investigative side available, however what they DID provide was a neutral ground. That is something SORELY lacking in the current player-run auction sites and as we well know (without naming sites) has had some... less than optimal... results.

Does it really matter what EAs stance is? Supposedly they have a zero tolerance stance on speedhacking yet on GL there running all around at superspeed like usual with no fear of retribution.

I believe malice was just trying to make a statement about the economy/inflation and not that our capitalistic freedoms should be hindered. When I see an item selling for 50+ million it's hard to disagree but it's all relative. In a less inflated economy, say one where that same item sells only for a million gp, the average player would be very unlikely to raise that much cash any more than he can raise 50+ mil now. Alternatively, EA could reduce the rarity of items so everyone would have a chance to acquire them but so many players appreciate the rarity of items that this would probably not go over well.

It is illegal to sell gold.

5. Rights and Responsibilities.
(c) Rights. You acknowledge and agree that all characters created, and items acquired and developed as a result of game play are part of the Software and Service and are the sole property of Electronic Arts.
11. General Provisions.
You may not use, copy, modify, sublicense, rent, sell, assign or transfer the rights or obligations granted to you in this Agreement, except as expressly provided in this Agreement.

But if I'm wrong, I'm going to sell my gold and get a really nice mountain bike.

TOS

Electronic Arts does not recognize or condone any outside service that may be used for the exchange of points, assets or attributes that you may accumulate as a result of participating in the Service or playing your EA game. This includes the exchange of points or EA Elite cards on services including eBay™ or Yahoo!™ Auctions. We don’t assume any responsibility for, and won’t support, such transactions. ALWAYS USE CAUTION WHEN EXCHANGING ASSETS ON THESE SERVICES!

In short ... your on your own. RMT is NOT explicitly banned/disallowed ...

contrast with WOW TOS
#8 ... (inpart) ....Blizzard does not recognize any virtual property transfers executed outside of the Game or the purported sale, gift or trade in the "real world" of anything related to the Game. Accordingly, you may not sell items for "real" money or otherwise exchange items for value outside of the Game.

EA ... For UO ... RMT is acknowleged ... probably exists ... WONT support or police it ... (does not recognize or condone any outside service that may be used for the exchange of points)

EA "Selling gp ... items ... etc." maybe some day every thing ... no problem.
EA "Buying" .... ANYTHING ...
Big Problem ... approaching dumb, ignorant, $#@@&*%$! ...etc. (wrong)

"Disallowing" RMT ... already Known... not a solution (google wow gold ... whatever ... any and all games items and "coin" can be bought)

Just keep this in mind! All the highest populated games that care about their customers go to great lengthes to prevent sales of ingame property. There was a time that ingame sales were good for UO but it went way to far and has greatly DAMAGED THE GAME!

For the love of god, Just play the game and quit crying about everything..

Brokers exist on EVERY VIDEO GAME PERIOD.. IF you pay taxes and you dont abuse anything what the hell is the big deal, its just like working an under the table job, If you claim it nobody but the gaming company can stop you and quite frankly they have Stated SEVERAL Times on these forums that they allow in game sales for gold..

Just because one person does it more extreme than the next does that make them any more a culprit than the person selling his account for 200$

its sad to see people still think they make a difference about this by posting how they think its illegal..

I always love the "neener neener im telling on you kids" that have to page report or cry evertime someone has something better than them, have a better conection, have a better account and so on...

Play the game YOUR way and dont let THEM get to you. If you do that you would probably enjoy the game more..

Remember UO is kinda like burger king...its YOUR WAY.

That's the way I look at it....untill THEIR tactics saturate an economy with gold and screws up MY game. When real money is concerned folks tend to be naughty in their means to obtain it.

It's not that I think all RMT are cheaters. More like all economy nuking hardcore 23/7 multi account scripting cheaters are RMT. And when these action screw up mining, lumberjacking and BOS, then they can all burn....cause they are messing with MY way...as I was having it. Draconi and devs can be as blunt an instrument in that as EA will permit.
