What am I doing wrong?

Hey all, I have tried a couple times now since returning to the game to get a pet bonded to me with no luck. The first time was with my pack horse. I stabled him in new Haven and waited a week. I used the click on the stablehand and select claim all pets method, then I fed him 2 apples. Nothing happened. I tried recalling to see if he was bonded, and he didn't come with me.
Second time was with a beetle someone gave me a week ago yesterday (Saturday). He told me to put it in the stable, wait a week and then claim and feed it so it would be bonded. I waited till today (8 days actually, this is Sunday) went to the stablehand and said "Claim Paul" (my beetles name) and there he was. I fed him a cooked chicken and nothing. I thought that maybe it wasn't enough food so I went out and killed a bunch of livestock and fed him the meat continuously. This only resulted in him becoming very slow and sluggish. Oh, I should mention that each time I feed my pets I get the msg 'your pet looks happier'. How do I make it look bonded to me? lol
Can someone help? Am I just unlucky?

You have to feed it BEFORE you stable it, then a week later when you get it out.

The bonding process doesn't start until you feed it that first time.
