Basically, just throw stuff away. Check for value using the context menu on the trash can/barrel
Old 'gift' items have fairly high value, 10th anniversary items,
lower value, but more readily available examples are MIB pre-chest loot, mask of orcish kin (the green one) Evil orc helm, power crystals, empty mib chests and stealables.

do i need to get a barrel on my own, or are they somewhere within the cities?

either your home barrel, or the ones at the Britain and Luna banks (which look like chests on most shards).

With the home barrel, it takes 3 minutes after the last item for the barrel to flush (so you can recover items accidentally placed in them), but the city garbage chests, the stuff's gone immediately.
