What about a dungeon for *naked* characters?

Wouldn't it be cool and fun to have a dungeon where you only may enter if you havent got any items on paperdoll nor in backpack? You'd have to drop all stuff at bank/home and find usefull stuff on monsters or floor, maybe even buy some gear inside from npcs or other players. You would be able to bring stuff out of there of course, but not inside. I think this might be fun and challanging. Stygian Abyss would be perfect to introduce something like that, thinking about Ultima Underworld where you got thrown into it as a prisoner.

There has to be some form of rationale. Personally I think this would have been a nice way for red players to redeem themselves back before Renaissance. Instead of waiting for the murder count to decay, they have to earn it by being thrown into a dungeon (once captured by guards or players) and then have to fight their way deeper to the bottom of the dungeon. Earning items and supplies along the way. If they fail, they are left to wonder the dungeon as ghosts (able to res of course).

Would have been nice incentive to ensure players be good citizens.

Well it has not to be a prison, you can also think about a moongate/portal to that dungeon which only can be passed by being naked.

My guild used to a hunt like this. It was called EMC hunt. (Easy Monster Challenge). All you started with was a torch and a weapon (NPC). Mages had a spellbook with 1st lvl spells and 5 of each reagent.

That was so much fun. Going to have to run that again.

Doesn't make much sense though. Why all of a sudden must we be naked? The prison example you used from Ultima Underworld 1 was a better reason for being naked.

Don't get me wrong I'm all for the idea. Would lead to some really thoughtful gameplay. But they should never introduce new ideas (even good ones) without making sense (as they've done plenty of times before).

Players run these events all the time, it's called a Naked Dungeon Crawl. It's loads of fun to see who ends up with the best looted suit at the end of it, it's just FUN, and you can do that anytime you want, they don't need to add anything, just go and do it!

Despise is a great dungeon to do that. I've been able to eventually fight Titans. The reactions from other players can be fun.

Our guild used to run Dungeon Escape events like this...we would all dress in prison orange outfits, a simple weapon or spellbook/regs for mage types and gate into a dungeon. The whole idea was to escape the dungeon alive as a group, so everyone had to help each other. This was before we had silly things like Ninja and Paladins in the game

sounds fun... also, it would be easier to balance the content because everyone is on a roughly-even playing field when they enter.

It would be even cooler if when you entered the dungeon, it put everything in your inventory into a safe crate (restrictions on entering the dungeon while encumbered, etc. It would then suit you up with a suit based on the skills on your template. If you're a bard, it would give you an instrument. If you're a mage, it would give you a bag of reagents or something.

They would have to restrict pets for content like this. Otherwise, a tamer with hiding could bring a fully developed pet and really rake in the loot. Perhaps they could just make it so you can't bring pets in, but you can tame pets there.

I hope you don't think I am being petty, but this is exactly the sort of thing that should be arranged by players, rather than the development team adjusting the code for a dungeon.

I've led a few naked dungeon crawls. The rules are simple...

All player enter wearing only shorts/shirt, and carrying a torch or lantern and an NPC-bought weapon.
No spell-casting of any sort... mage / weaver / bushi / chiv / necro.
Kill stuff, and loot armour & weapons in a group rota system (although characters with Magic Resist are not allowed to loot armour.)
Work your way through the dungeon, equipping as you go.
Finally reach the "boss" monsters of the dungeon.

The first time my guild tried this was in Despise. Watching the reaction of other players as three characters, with a dozen bits of armour between them, stormed ogre lord island, was hilarious.

At least one person pulled our paperdolls, and saw Lord/Lady titles and what we were wearing. The response was "you are all bloody mad."

This sort of thing is where UO excells over other games: We have the freedom to do stupid stuff within the existing game design.
We're only limited by our own imaginations, and don't really need a "dungeon for silly people" to be coded into the game.

I understand your suggestion, but I would contend that such things are for us, as players, to find for ourselves rather than have them pre-arranged for us.

Good examples of how players themselves can make content. The devs don't need to go "retro" or do any of the stuff the die hard "retro" people yap on about. Make your own challenge. Always what UO has been about.

Heh, I didn't even read your response before I made mine. My sentiments exactly.

Well, i am quite aware that it is possible to run it as player event. But instead of introducing more powerfull critters with each expansion why not just take some power off the player ? There will be new items in new expansions and new landmass so why not make those items available in a "new" challanging and fun way?

We elected to go cloth or undies since there was no advantage in either and npc bought weapons. The rest was to be looted in the dungeon, and those with magic resist skill were to forfeit armour until those without were kitted. Looted weapons were distributed on a part-rota, part-who has-what-skill basis (there were no quarrels!)

The Elder or Legendary Swordsman sporting a canary yellow dress declares he's ready for ettins. Classic. As there was a no pets/mounts rule, the chap on the charger is not part of the Nekkid Dungeon Runners, he was simply agog at the spectacle.

I missed the ogres and ogre lords screenies unfortunately, but we did, indeed, seize and hold the island.

And for the Grand Finale, well, what could possibly top storming Yew Gate?

...with rather predictable results...

What I love most about UO is that for the most part, we really are the architects of our own experience.

Unfortunately, any new landmass wil have to be accessible by the majority of UOs' players for it to be financially vialble.

I doubt that the majority of players will visit a new land if they cannot take the buffed-out characters that they are used to. How populated would Tokuno or Malas be if you could only enter in NPC armour?

Stuff like naked hunting is always going to be relegated to the lunatic fringe of UO, and as much fun as it can be, it will never make an attractive aspect to an expansion in an item-based world.

As it is, the game caters to anything you can think of really. Someone mentioned an idea for a casino. With bucc's den being that type of seedy place and all the games/dice in-game, it's already there. bugger waiting for devs.

One thign this brings to light is the need for a community news section on the official site. Something where we can easily see and coordinate these events across all shards. Much like the town crier used too.

The other bonus is the lack of rationale. You want to go to the dungeon naked for a challenge. There is the explanation. Doesn't need anything in-game to justify it.
