I thought I had successfully purged my COBOL programming experience... <sniff>What was really fun in the old days (before C++ was dominant) were the "think outside the box" type exercises, to write code in languages that were oriented towards other specializations. For example, back in 1986, when my second-term Fortran course's final project was to write a business program (complete with pay calculations and check printing) - something that was more in line with COBOL, than Fortran 77 (which typically was used for more math/science oriented programming).
