We should work on assembling a "this pet vs. this mob" compendium...

I think one thing missing from the stickies (among many, since most of the stickies are pretty old info) is a "This pet is good vs. this mob" type of compendium. I know I'm always wondering what to use to take down certain creatures, and of course I can just trial-and-error it, and do... But I'm sure this type of guide would be helpful for many Tamers of all development levels.

I agree 100%, I am a fairly new Tamer so I have to just guess what would work best most of the time. This would be quite helpful for us no0bz. <-(lol)

Or a "Born Again Newb", heh.

It used to be as simple as Nightmare+Dragon, kill bloods/EGs, profit. So many things to kill now, and the Nightmare+Dragon combo isn't the way... ;)

i agree.
i havent killed much yet solo but here's what ive done

Lurg
Take your GD, he'll demolish everything, good gold, fame, faction, spellweaving scroll farm

Swoop
Mare+Beetle is actually stronger/faster than GD, but it'll require very active healing

Succubus (for Honor gains)
Take your GD, Succubus is just too strong for other pets and GD will take less healing.

please add more... im extremely interested in any solo/duo tamer stuff or tamer+necro

thanks

For succubus, take your Cu, much better than a Gdrag. They hit against the succubus' weak resists and a decent, well trained one will require little or no healing (short of a paragon one, and even then it's not a huge issue).

The Complete Hunter's Guide can answer your question. Look up the strengths/weaknesses of the monster and compare to the strengths/weaknesses of your pet.

However I don't think this question is easily answered. You need to consider a few other aspects as well:

1) Quite a few monsters are extremely difficult if the Tamer (or someone else) can't provide long distance healing/curing.

2) A Tamer with Disco can take on a lot tougher critters than a Tamer without Disco.

3) Your ability to handle a particular monster is greatly influenced by the other stuff that spawns in the area.

4) Multiple pets really complicates the calculation.

Eh, not really.

True, but that's also not a reason to essentially "give up" and not try to provide pointers. :D

For example, what are people using to take down GDs? By the "numbers" my Dragon+Nightmare should be able to ... but in reality they both get eaten in seconds.

I'm modifying my Succubus advice. If you have untrained/barely trained animals, the Cu Sidhe gets eaten alive. The GD can take out Succubus' out of the gate.

However once Cu gets around 85ish wrestle and appropriate skills it can solo Succubus and mostly heals itself. Your job is to target for honor, invis, and let Succ aggro on pet. Collect loot inbetween spawn.

Doing this with Cu was pretty fast.

However, I haven't taken my trained GD down there to see how it goes, but i like the fact you can ride the Cu down and avoid aggro. So either seems to be good strat to kill succ.

Here are a few of the pets I use for certain situations:

Succubus (best for gaining honor, every tamer should work them every once in a while):
I use my cu. With self healing and damage which targets the succubi's weakest resists, the cu is the best option for gaining honor from succubi.

Thrasher: For gaining honor, the cu sidhe. For just killing it for ML marties, the rune beetle/bake kitsune combination

Miasma: Greater dragon. The rune beetle does well too, and kills the Miasmas faster, but the dragon requires less maintenance.

Bedlam (all creatures, hunting alone): Greater dragon. Not much else can take that much abuse.

Bedlam (Red Death): Cu sidhe. The Red Death is horribly weak to energy. With a cu sidhe and an undead slayer spellbook (I have EI rather than spellweaving), a Red Death dies before the cu is in trouble nearly all the time.

The Citadel (Key collecting): Any good pet combination works well. My favorite is the nightmare/rune beetle, but the greater dragon is probably better, assuming you can get it to the red key area.

SA mini spawns:
Any spawn with fire demons (there are three): Greater dragon. Being nearly immune to physical and fire damage helps, even though they kill more slowly than my favorite beetle/bake. A pair of bake kitsune are also very effective here.
Wyvern [reknowned]: Also greater dragon. Other pets are passable there, but since you can't use your vet skill against the forgotten servants due to their area effect attacks, you really want the higher resists of the dragon.
Cavern of Discarded: Are you daft? Use a warrior with a soul seeker! But if you are bored and want an easy spawn, take a pack of something or a rune beetle/something else combination. Otherwise the reknowned rats take too long to kill. (True story, I was working the spawn with my swordsman while two tamers were working with their dragons. I finished both before the two dragons were half done with one reknowned)
Goblin spawns: doesn't matter, they drop like mongbats anyway.
Undead spawn: I've only used my beetle/bake there. Others may or may not be better.
Acid spawn: Greater dragon. The acid attack from the interred grizzles do physical damage, making the dragon the best survivor there.
Navery Nighteyes: cu sidhe or beetle/bake
Medusa: either no pet or one greater dragon. Make sure you can kill the dragon quickly.

LOL, all these insanely high end mobs I've never seen... :D

All I want to do at present is clear out GD spawns so I can find a good GD to tame...

This is a pet peeve of mine: seeing folks use cu sides (cold damage pet) at Lady of the Snow.

Greater dragon for ladies of the snow, ice elements, snow elements (fire breath, flame strike). Helps if you can cast corpse skin first.

Which is why I said a decent, well trained Cu.;)

A pet peeve of mine is seeing tamers there at all lol. Sampire for the win there, just SO much faster.

I think Farsight did an excellent job pointing out the what/where as far as pets go....I'd concur. I personally don't use pets in the Abyss due to multiple LOS issues, I generally roll a Sampy or a Mage, but when I have used them, that pretty much sums up how I would use them. My personal favorite combo, and the pets I use most, are the bug/bake combo....love the damage. However, you need to learn to manage one pet before you try two, if you want to maximize your survivability.

For greater dragons, I either use my own greater and a dragon slayer spell book (remember, Eval int on my template) or a cu sidhe. A cu sidhe tears up dragons pretty effectively, but multiple targets makes life hard for the puppy.

The disadvantage of the dragon vs. dragon is that it's slow going, but healing is easy.

Might have to try one of my Cu's then. Mine don't rate all that high in the Pet Power Calculator, but I can't figure out why it's rating them so low - their stats/HP are 93-99% of max. o_O

resists are important for your cu sidhe. Make sure it has at least a physical resist of 60 or more before trying to take on dragons with it.

I think my best one's around 66% Phys, but I'm at work atm and can't check for sure. I'll have a look tonight and try it out.

I can always go find another Cu I suppose. I hate taming the damned things though... ;)

I have a 4.5 Cu that I'm working on. Will post stats later, I am also at work atm.

Yeah I have to see the stats on that beast.

I wish Cu's weren't so strong ingame though - I really hate the look/etc of them. I'd much rather have dragons and the like. :D

I like CU's and the color variations. Though sadly my best CU is a plain colored one! None of the colored ones I've tamed have matched up in power!

I'd actually like GD's to have varied colors also like Cu/Hiryu. It's ******** we all have to walk around with the same, red dragon.

Ah, I see the problem with my Cu's now.

A somewhat trained one:

558 HP - 602/78/287 stats - 57/36/77/46/81 resists - 84.1 wres - 81.4 tac - 70.7 resist - 75.7 anatomy - 85.8 healing.

A fresh tame one I was waiting on bonding for (released it though):

580 HP - 603/81/288 stats - 65/26/71/36/73 - 71.2/69.8/56.4/50.5/76.7.

I need to find better ones. :D
