Ok so I ran across this template and I am tempted to mess with it, but wanted some advice and see which way to take it...

Original template is

106 magery (shouldnt fail at 7th circle spells)
120 eval
100 med
120 swords
120 bushido
120 resist
34 chiv +whatever you can get on jewels

While this isnt a bad idea, its missing tactics and parry.. so do you go with

106 magery
120 eval
100 med
120 swords
120 bushido
90 tactics
64 chiv

and for go parry all together? If only we had another 100 skill points this would be easier to figure out :(

In my "anyone playing tank mage?" thread, I propose a "tankier" template:

120: Swords, Parry, Resisting Spells
100: Tactics, Magery,
80: Eval Int, Meditate

The main differences are that it substitutes Parry for Bushido and stresses the warrior instead of the mage. If you need the 106 Magery, Resist could be dropped to 114.

Perhaps I'm blind to the possibilities, but as I'm thinking right now, Bushido without Parry is like icing without cake. Sure folks do it, but you're going to rot your teeth (assuming you have any left after the fight ;) ). Sure Lightning Strike and Perfection are great for increasing damage, put I like getting hit less often (eg, Parry).

Sorry, I didnt read through all the threads before I posted :(

you are right, theres no point in having bushido without parry....

your template works too, if not better than what I have come up with so far ... I would just switch out resist for bushido because honestly, theres no point in having resist. You can trap box out of paralize, eat apples to remove curses.. bushido would be used for counter attack, evade and confidence.
hmmm the more I think about it the more I like your template... I would just change it to -

120 Swords
120 Parry
120 Bushido
80 Med
90 Tactics
110 Magery
80 Eval

or

120 Magery
120 Eval
120 Swords
120 Bushido
100 Med
90 Tactics
50 Chiv

now I dont know which one I want to do ... I've already started the second one cause I had 120 eval, 120 swords, 120 magery and 110 bushido stoned lol but the more I think about it.. I will be fighting a lot of dexxers and the parry would be great to have

I just started a new char. and was thinking along the lines of:

Magery
Med
Eval
Resist
Tact
Archery

any thoughts on that?

just an fyi, 120 bush and 60 parry is 20% parry chance and evade still works well.

No room for Chiv on this type of template right?

Also does parry require a shield? Or can you parry with a 1-handed weap (to chug) or bow..

How viable is a tactics mage?

Thanks

when considering dexxer/mage templates the big barrier for me is stats not skills, getting dex and str high enough to be an effective tank and having enough mana to do specials and cast any decent spells..well the math just doesn't work for me. I could be wrong...not something I have spent a lot of time on really.

In my experience with tactics mages, you have to run faction to get it to work. I've run several variations, but the main piece for one is a spirit of the totem in my opinion, the 20 stat along with 15 hci is huge. If you chug then you can get the stats to work more in your favor, 50 enhance pots is a +31 str and agility, which when combined with 20 str off your hat adds in 82 stat points helping to boost the dex up a lot for faster swings/better hits and possibly max block (depending on how you do it). However you do it tho there will be a weakness, and I always feel no resist on a mage is horrible. One mana vampire and your in rough shape, also spell plauge is scaled vs resist, so not having it will make pixie plaugers really tough.

My favorite one was a scribe macer mage, I was blue and human so I could use some chiv without skill points (remove curse). Basically tho it was a combo killer, curse/explode/flamestrike/ai. If it hit it would usually kill someone, if it missed you had to try again. I think mace is the way to go for "hybrid" templates because of its higher damage (easier to hit 35s on ai's) and its slower swing speed can be used to your advantage (cast inbetween hits). Besides what is nastier then a war axe?

I tried all this pre imbue and before mystic was out, so the suits people ran were not perfect. I think that imbue helps templates like this out more, it is easier to get armor pieces that have huge stat increases and such, but at the same time not many people will die from an explode/fs combo anymore.

A parry tactics mage I don't think is viable, you either can't chug or you have no resist or no med both of which are very hard to not have. I would look more at a necro parry warrior for a hybrid caster/meelee since you can use 4/6 chiv to heal better w/ a shield. If you do the evader, you will survive a few ganks perhaps, but if you get disarmed it will be very tough to live, and in my experience there is a lot of disarm archers running around who are designed to kill evaders and mages w/ mage weapons.

I think bloodoath beats evade in most cases.

For a parry mage I like to run anat/eval and parry, then run the open hand w/ a shield to counter most disarming templates and to help block the archers. This leaves the offense weaker, so I like to try to fight scribe onto my parry mage templates. To do this requires a lot of skill increases, but it is doable, and of course 50 ep.

However you do a tactics mage you will have a weakness, so depending on the shard you play on, you can design the template to have a weakness that is least likely to be discovered. Some shards are heavy on mystic mages, so no resist would be bad, and evade would be very helpful. Some shards are dexxer heavy and that means you need parry or a non disarmable approach to mage play. Tank Mages got hurt badly by the tactics patch, and that is why you see so many mages running mage weapons now. If you find a successful one tho please let us know, I always love to smash **** with a war axe while slinging spells around.

I'm working on a bushido tank mage with a little bit of necro.

I used to use this template before the tactics nerf:

120 Mage
120 Resist
120 Eval
120 Bushido
120 Swords
60 Necro
60 Spirit

I used to exp/corpse/eo and toggle the nerve to connect after, followed by fs/omen/pain.

Used to work really well because most suits weren't corpse proof and most people had < 120 HP. After tactics nerf, I scrapped the build completely.

I'm sure theres a way to make it work again, but why would you not go mystic?

I've pretty much rebuilt all of my mages across all shards to be mystic. Cleansing winds / hail storm are superior for group fights. In 1 v 1 scenarios spell plague is still the best if you use it right.

Right. I find it hard to buy into any warrior template, hybrid or not, that doesn't use Healing. If you're fighting stuff you're probably using the majority of your mana on heals unless you have healing. So with Healing you can get by with less mana......not to mention you can heal and cure on the run.

I think the term here is Bok Mage and not tank or tactics mage, but I guess that is dependent on the circles you run with.

I would go with this

1. Mage stats

120 Magery
120 Eval
120 Swords
120 Tactics
120 resist
120 Bushido

You definitely want a large mana pool, max LMC, and stack MR 12 minimum.
