In my next message, there will be an example of the fact that I can be an anal-retentive b*stard when it comes to data collection. For example, I think that it is nice to know that a certain combination of things can produce a certain result... but actually, in this game, it can produce several DIFFERENT results and I want to know at what percentage each of those can occur. For that reason, I ran a test growing 20 lvl 1 Prickly Goldweed Seeds. It isn't necessary to do 20 in a row to do meaningful data collection when there are a LOT of people contributing data, but for this test it is just me and 20 is a good proxy for "a lot".

What I discovered, as a level 64 cultivator (I didn't skill up once, no suprise) was:
85% of the time, only 1 Prickly Goldweed resulted
5% of the time, a Wilted Wild Weed resulted (critical failure)
5% of the time, a Glinting Goldweed and a Glinting Goldweed Seed resulted (critical success)
5% of the time, a Glinting Goldweed and a Prickly Goldweed Seed resulted (critical success option #2?).

That is far more meaningful to me then only knowing the particular ingredients I used could produce Prickly Goldweed Seed, Wilted Wild Weed, Glinting Goldweed, and Glinting Goldweed Seed.

The basic format I chose for cultivation looks like this:

Where Rarity (gWGBP) refers to grey, White, Green, Blue, Purple) and I hope everything else is self-explanatory. Some cultivation results can have up to 3 outputs, which is why I have 3 result entries. Sorry for the periods, I will explain why below.

Something similar could be done for Talismans (though with Talismans, I thought I came to the conclusion that there can never be more than one result per combination) and Alchemy (though I think there the max is 2, but I am not high enough level yet to be sure).

The biggest problem I have with doing this here on stratics is when posting you can't write in a fixed-width font (like courier), so I did all of my data accumulation in notepad and just cut and paste it over. Then I noticed that even if you choose to DISPLAY the data in a fixed-width font (like courier), the website software here gleefully removes all the white spaces that made everything line up nicely. Grrrrr. Now I am not sure I even want to post the results of my 20 tests. Having to put periods in as white-space place holders is insane, given that it will have to change for every different recipe

BTW, I think this would be pretty easy to write up into a java-application or even just with HTML (I don't write either, so don't ask me to do it ;-). Have entries for each item in the recipe with drop-downs to select from every known item (updating would be required when new items are found, obviously), and either give the ability to select from possible known results (which in turn would permit you to just track the percentage results that each recipe returns what results), or let people just enter it in and suck the data into a database for further number crunching.

If anyone at stratics wants to write such a web application, or anyone wants to volunteer to do it for stratics, it would make this web site an exceedingly useful resource for crafters, well beyond its' current level for typical players.

Ok, so that last list was 20 of the same recipe, here are some different recipes (though using the same base ingredients as a baseline). I learned that "critical successes" produce 2-3 items, including the plant you desired plus a seed and sometimes one other item. "Special Moments" produce a seed and a pigment item that can be used in dye creation.

A problem is that both cultivation level and seed type/ql seems to also play a part in how frequently your get a critical success (item + seed of the same type) or special moment (basically higher quality and/or different items are created, a seed (same or higher ql) is always returned)(for note: it's not always dyes. Sometimes, it's just the higher ql component matching the higher ql seed, sometimes it's a improve stability component).

Essentially, the upgraded seed sometimes created in a special moment appears to have a higher chance of critical success, though I suspect a lower chance of special moment (has anyone got one from such seeds?). The item they create also appears to have the QL of the next level item (e.g. upgraded sk 25 seeds creates uncommon components instead of meager ones), though for special moments, I'm not sure how those count in terms of QL (e.g. I've a level 1 green/uncommon dye component).

In my opinion though, it may be more benificial to simply ignore adding soil/water/fertilizer. Not only does it require to maintain 3 (or more) slots to keep said items, but they also distract from killing stuff (and hence getting more seeds).

Actually, I have never tried doing cultivation without adding soil/water/fertilizer, since the one time I didn't pay attention and forgot to add something resulted in a critical failure. I figured it would always do that if you forgot to put stuff in. Knowing that it won't takes a load off my mind. However, for my purposes, I will probably continue to put in at least the lvl 1 stuff just as a baseline. You are welcome to contribute data with none, however, which would be a good data set, also.

I thought about including the level of the crafter as part of the data maintained, but realized that including that information would result in too many relatively unique data points that make it really hard to develop good correlations. I would rather hope that enough people of both high and low level contribute data to have "level" mostly average out and the data still be worthwhile.

I have never ever used an extra ingredient in cultivating..the worst that happens is sometimes i get a weed, and sometimes i get the seed back again in my bag.

My failure rate may be slightly higher than yours...in 20 weeds, i tend to get 2failures (the weed ones not the giving back my seed ones).

I tend to get 3 crits per 20.

the weird thing is that i've found absolutely no market for grown plants..and i'd think there would be as scavangers would want grown plants not seeds.

How to actually DO a profession?
Ngille: Hit the V button on keyboard to bring up your actions. Click on General Tab and scroll down until you find Cultivate Icon (mushroom). Click and drag it to hotbar. This will bring up a window with 4 boxes in it representing plots, you will only have one plot available. Click and drag the items you want to use from your inventory (bank won't work has to be inventory).

Beele: When you hit 50/100/150 skill level, another plot opens up.

So far I could not confirm that water, nutrients and other stuff have any influence on the outcome but they definately speed up the cultivation process.

The better seeds from a *Special Moment* generally can be used 4-5 times, and I got a *Special Moment* from those once. The result was some resin.

I can say that I also FEEL that having tried about 50 seeds without using any soil/water/food that I THINK the odds of getting a weed are ~10% instead of the 5% from using lvl 1 of each, but the only thing I can say for 100% certain is it takes longer.

This is why entering data for each and every transaction becomes essential. Meaningful information isn't about feeling what results are, it is about KNOWING what the results are. Minimizing all of the data to the point of knowing what CAN result doesn't provide any information about what the chances are that such results occur. Without the percentages, you are playing poker without the benefit of knowing which hands could even be winners.

As a self-centered, power-hungered Ninja who just need a recipe for my own selfish reference, I don't really care about the percentages. With my stupidity and low IQ for common sense in basic gardening, I am happily risking the chances and levelling up with Gohl's findings. Eventually I DID found another website with extensive recipes close to Gohl's format. So continue embracing your dedicated passion for your precise statistics and percentages of your proud experiments and trials. I KNOW I am 100% applauding you!

I'd go for the statistics too - if there was a way to collect enough pionts for it.

But as I generally have less than 5 seeds of a type, and often just single pieces, it is pointless, not to mention the insecure supply of better components like water, bottles, soil, etc.

With that low number of comparable tries, statistics are not viable.

Hey first off id like to say thank you all for taking the time to being the first and only people to really help out with the crafting, however, is there a way you could simplify another post about how to get the resources, and how to work the skill the fastest using buyable or lootable resources, for example: (this seed) can be gotten from (this)
(Skill level) (make this intill) (skill level) im having a very hard time getting gains from anything provided by vendors. and I have not found any way to gather resources since they screwed scavanging.
