Video Tutorial: Peace Taming Greater Dragons (without Honor)

I've received a few questions on why I don't cast invisibility to break the gdrag's aggro once I get the tame attempt off. I use that approach with cu sidhes, but they are not spellcasters. I find that with the frequency of spellcasting from the greater dragon, more often than not, the invis spell I'm trying to cast is interrupted, and the couple seconds of standing still (even with max Faster Casting) is enough for the dragon to swipe a claw into me. That's 50-ish hp in damage plus the potential for a bleed attack.

I admit that I am a clumsy macro-masher, so this could just be a matter of ill-timed keystrokes on my part, but I gave up the invis approach for greater dragons (and rune beetles, coincidentally - though I use direct peace on them, so they usually remain quiet throughout the tame attempt).

These are just examples of how I happen to do things - most useful for people who've never tried it before and want to see one way of approaching it. Your mileage may vary - and there are definitely more ways of accomplishing the same task! I am definitely not saying that my approach is the only way or even the best way. It's just one way :)

(That said, I'd love to see video demos of other approaches that I'm not so good at, if anybody else would like to share! FYI, I'm using the free CamStudio screen recorder software, the same mic/headset I use for Vent, and the Windows Live Movie Maker software that came with Windows... nothing fancy required. The only trick is that video/audio files have a 2GB max, and the raw footage is pretty big - that's why I had to break the dragon video into multiple segments and assemble them in post production. The first recording I did exceeded 2GB and I lost the footage).

Hahah, love your voice commentary!

The invis thing can be a pain vs a nasty dragon, I don't have peace or honor so I tend to get the full flame-thrower ;) But I tend to tame after beating them down so it's that wee bit safer to cast out in front of them. The only time I don't beat a drag down first is when he's healing up so fast that it's pointless, chain healer draggies just give me a battle till they're tame. They're superb at spawning death robes lol.

I found good macros really saved my hide with GDs, having an invis macro that targets myself is a lifesaver, also I have my tame macro set to repeat lots of times in EC, then I just hit it once and it'll keep trying a bunch of times with me free to focus on survival.

I'd also carry heal and cure pots and if you're nervous a bracelet of health is quite handy at keeping you alive. Basically build a suit that's purely designed for defending you from the dragon's attacks. Especially if you plan to tame a lot of them.

Wenchy - I never even thought of doing the multiple-repeat on a macro in EC! *duh* Thanks!!

I am thinking now of building a dragon-taming suit. A guildie was asking why I don't run Protection, and honestly it's because I've been too lazy to re-do my armor suit to accommodate the -15% physical resist. Since gd's do 100% physical damage, I wanted to keep my resist at 70. But now that I'm thinking of it, I may re-do my suit to bump my phys resist up to 85 (so it's 70 after casting protection) and re-do my jewels to include a bracelet of health.

Then maybe I can use the invis option to break aggro (the way I do with cu sidhes). I do wonder if it's worth it, though, as the greater dragons will re-aggro pretty quickly. Cranky beasts. I suppose there's no way to know but to try!

It has also been suggested that I macro in the mini spells for cure and heal to get those off quickly - but my clumsy macro-mashing might negate the benefit there :)

*giggles* Yep, I used to hold down my tame macro in CC but that didn't work so well in EC so I improvised with the repeats.

I've sometimes added in HP increase items and basically anything I can think of to keep me alive for one more puff. Just a case of use what you have to hand. I really need to re-equip my tamers as they could be much stronger with imbued gear etc, but I'd certainly keep a full resists suit and then just add in from there. The ring of elements gives a handy boost of resists if the bracelet takes you down a bit. I used to use it a lot just to finish off resists on luck suits etc lol. Might be a worth waiting till all the armour changes are done before you make any suits up, just in case :D

Also, max out your FC/FCR if you haven't already, then you can be a bit faster casting spells. I dunno if you've got that already though. You won't ever totally get the better of GDs, I still get some that waste me and turn me into a day old rookie again. But it is handy if you can at least try and take the pressure off with an invis. When it works it's almost easy.

You might also want to look at rearranging your macros so they're really easy to get to, I like to line them up in order that I'll use them then it's easy to shuffle my hand over. I'm a touch typist though so that does make me a good macro slapper. But it's funny how you can end up reaching right over the keyboard and suddenly realise you need a better layout.

Working on a new suit tonight! I'm going to put 85 phys on it just in case I run protection, but the more I think about that, the more I don't want my casting speed down to zero. That seems to negate the effect of not getting interrupted. Those milliseconds are precious when a greater is swiping his nasty claws at me!

Is having Resist Spells needed for taming big nasties like these, since they are spell casters? I have a peacemaker mage and then 120 stones for all 3 taming skills. And while I can fit the resist into the template, I was hoping to add herding as it's my new favorite flavor right now!
Anyways, great video Kitiara! Thank you for sharing it with us!

Thanks, Adeka! I tried to keep it real, lol :)

I do not have resist on any of my tamers. The ones that do the actual taming rely on peacemaking (and when all else fails, running away).

I have been playing my bard so much, that I wanted to switch her up a bit, and a peace tamer sounded fun. Real, indeed!

Hehe. That's good to know! I didn't want resist on the template anyways.

This may not be the spot for it, but do you have any recommendations and or vidoe's of herding tamers? Maybe a future vidoe?! Thanks again!

I've never tried herding!! You'd be surprised what you can find on youtube though - people make videos of all kinds of UO things :) I would check there!

Great, informative video kit... Speaking of herding, I use it when taming GD's. I use 2 accounts. One is the Tamer, other is my Stealth/Herder with Animal Lore. The Stealth/Herder stealths around the Temple checking the GD's there and also inside the Temple for the ones in there. She then leads the best one out to the same area you use and my Tamer takes over from there. If none of the GD's look decent, then the Tamer pulls up her 3.9 GD with a Summoning Ball and just kills the current spawn. Then rinse/repeat till she gets a decent one...

Very interesting. I've never tried it with area peace, I use direct peace - near valor, usually not far from the healer hut. I hop on and off my ethy repeatedly :D and eat an orange petal before I start. I've been told you can't tame them with direct peace - don't anyone tell my draggy that please.
When the pet is still agro'd when you tamed it would 'all stop' work?

Good idea with "all stop" Petra - I'll try it! I've never bothered to add a command for all stop. Never use it!

I've tamed them with direct peace before - it just takes longer to get a successful peace attempt, so I get bored and figure... what's a little damage? Bring it, dragon! :)

I started by adding all stop in front of all my follow command macros for my pets, just to ensure the little guys quit fighting long enough to come with me. But stop does seem to work wonders at getting aggro pets to stop chewing your rear. I've accidentally told pets to kill me, then really screwed up and told them to stop then follow me, and been glad that they had the generosity to obey the stop bit and not make me draggy kibble.

If you're poisoned or you get that delayed explosion, you probably want to tell them stop again (and of course cure first!)
