Greetings All

I played UO right about the time Renaissance came out and enjoyed it above all else - even after Warcraft came out and the last of my guild left UO to play WoW, I have had delusions of coming back to it. I tried briefly once and my experience was hardly fun so I left again. I have recently cancelled my WoW accounts and as I sit here waiting for SW:ToR to come out (and between Crysis 2 engagements), I find myself again toying with the idea of UO - I realize to log in and expect the feeling I had with UO back in days of old is expecting too much, but something compels me to try once more.

My question is, do y'all think I should even bother or just wait for SW:ToR in December? I will be starting all over in a game where the only familiarity left to me is the landscape within a dream of nostalgia......

I'm a PvM'er & I find most mid to upper level creatures challanging when i play solo. I like collecting gold, treasure, and magic items.

for the most part, I enjoy the game. Sometimes though, comming to Stratics forums has a way of bringing me down (arguing and such). If you come back, i would suggest getting involved with a guild that suits your play style.

Happy gaming!

Do you have any shard/guild suggestions?

It is fun to come back and there is still a great deal that makes UO unique. If your looking for a shard with a population that will match the good ole days you need Atlantic. Other then that its really a matter of what’s close to you. I myself play Chesapeake and would be happy to give you a run down of that shard if you would like.

I just came back about a month ago, and I have had alot of fun with it.. Lots of new content, and new rules as well have changed the game some since I played last about 4 yrs ago.. Hell, its only like 14$ or something, try it for a month. I play on Great Lakes and it has a good population of active people.

I personally returned to the game about 3 months ago after 6 years of being away from the game. I also started playing in Ren, personally I felt a bit forced out of the game when I left due to RL circumstances, I sold all of my belongings in game and decided it wasn't worth it at the time to try and earn all those things I had collected over the years all over again, and so I sold my main account, for a measly $25... that account was almost 5 years old at the time. Had I kept it going I would now have access to some nice veteran rewards... but that's not the point.
I did end up starting over almost completely. I was fortunate enough though to have left myself enough gold on my 2nd account (which will be 3yrs old @ the end of this month) to put together an LRC suit so I could work on magery on a brand new character.
It did not take me too long to build up a discord tamer to the point where I could control a rune beetle to farm balrons and then eventually was able to tame a greater dragon and begin farming other creatures.
After only 3 months back to the game I am now in a place where I can do pretty much anything I want (i have my tamer, a fully skilled mule, a thief, and a red pvper geared up), and have the ability to (within a little time) be able to purchase most if not everything that I had on my other account before I quit.

You are right that the game has changed quite a bit and that you may not get the same feeling stepping into it now like you did when you first started. But there are many people who still play the game that started around the time we did or even before trammel. One of the great things about Ultima Online is that the game is what you make it to be for yourself. This is something that cannot be said about many other similar games like World of Warcraft, which have a very linear path.
One of the things I enjoy the most about Ultima Online is not only experiencing new things but reminiscing with other players about things that took place in the past in the game... Things like the server down wars @ the brit graveyard on great lakes, sitting in Bucc's den before reds were allowed to enter any city they wanted, when certain major events took place that reshaped the game as we know it and so on.

Ultimately only you can decide whether you seriously want to play this game again... I hear alot of great expectations for SW:TOR, but I also hear bad news about it and know the history of Star Wars games... if that is a game you are really looking forward to playing, I would have to suggest saving your money and waiting for it to come out, and then if things with that game don't pan out, I am sure you can find a way to enjoy yourself playing Ultima Online again... as I said, it is what you make it.
And there is a whole community waiting for you should you choose to return, many helpful people & guilds still around, many enemies to fight.

Whatever you decide, I wish you luck.

You're gonna get fairly biased views by asking this type of question in a forum frequented mostly by UO die-hards who'll never quit the game regardless of how bad it is, mostly due to their attachment to virtual items which they think are meaningful or simply to validate to themselves the time investment they've put into the same game over the years. Just something to keep in mind.

I'm not one of those people. After UO I've played various MMOs casually and, after experiencing any modern MMO, I feel it would be hard to return to UO and still enjoy it. UO will be vastly different to how you remember it. A lot of shards' activity has declined significantly and the gameplay hasn't withstood the test of time too well imo. As you're coming from WoW, you'll be used to comprehensive client add-ons, macro systems, diverse and challenging group PvM, easily accessible and active PvP which you can casually jump into quickly, dungeon finder systems, achievements to give you incentives to do new stuff, tons of quests where you progress your character by actually playing, etc. which just aren't replicated in this game. UO, quite literally, hasn't moved very far from its fundamental basics: largely unstructured PvM and a sandbox which lacks content compared to any modern game yet still has a monthly cost comparable to one.

UO's PvM is still tuned for dial-up and the AI is woeful. "Challenging" mobs in UO aren't challenging due to their AI skill and aptitude, but the sheer number of hitpoints they're given to give the illusion of difficulty. This is probably my biggest gripe with UO actually, since the majority who still play the game are PvMers yet nothing has really been adapted to make this experience challenging or fun imo; most normal stuff dies in a few hits and even the bosses can be solo'd with the right skills. If this doesn't fundamentally show the problem I don't know what does.

If you were a PvPer, PvP in UO is largely dead now due to there being no real incentives and a playerbase who seems predisposed to being against competing with others and perhaps losing, despite not having to lose anything in the process anymore. In some ways I don't blame them due to the various exploits which have gone unchecked for years and how inaccessible joining in has become. It's far removed from WoW battlegrounds which are well populated with people who largely don't care too much about dying.

Finally, I'll say character progression in UO is tedious. The random nature of skill gains make playing normally for gains frustrating with the only viable alternative just macroing a character's skills which, while effective, is hardly entertaining. After all, we're looking for entertainment when playing games, right? Then comes the question when you have maxed your skills what, exactly, was the point? The end-game of UO is hardly in a good state right now for the reasons I mentioned above.

While I've been quite critical of UO here, these are genuinely my opinions after experiencing other games and exactly the reasons I fundamentally just cannot enjoy UO again. I have returned in the past only to login... run around for a bit and just logout again after realising that investing time into a character to reach an end-game state would be tedious as much as pointless. If you're anything like me, that will happen when you return too.

With all the above said, I do recommend you perhaps create a trial account or re-sub for a month and run around a bit as I know personally that reading other people's opinions on the game will never fully quench your underlying desire to experience UO again and the only way to gauge your potential enjoyment of it would be to play yourself. Perhaps after doing so you could return to this thread, or start a new one, detailing your thoughts as a returning player. It'd be interesting to read the opinions of someone who is unjaded and unbiased on the current state of UO for a change. >.>

I don't understand why some people think you can not train up skills in UO while playing the game. I've always done it that way , and find it the most fun way to play. When I get to a certain point, I start over, maybe even on a new shard. I also find plenty of the PVM quite challenging, but maybe that has something to do with my play style. I'm quite casual about it.

I'm a returning player and I have to admit that there is a lot of content that is contained in a 'modern' MMORPG that is not present in UO. That being said, there is a lot of crap in the 'modern' MMORPG that is unnecessary and designed to lead you along by the nose and direct your development every step of the way.

UO is not the game for you if you need something to validate the existence of your character. You have to want to play this game in order to play it, because it's not going to play you.

Some interesting opinions you have there.
I have to counter some of them though with some very harsh facts.
First off, I will say that I played World of Warcraft for 5 years during my time away from UO and have spent time lots of time pvping, raiding, and doing 5mans, etc. I can say that I have completed far more quests in that game than any person should. I leveled 3 shamans, one to 60, one to 70, one to 80, a priest to 80, a mage to 80, a deathknight to 80, a warrior to about 65 I think, and a warlock to around 60 or 70... i cant remember.

With that out of the way... in PvM in WoW not only do you have to wait for the right amount of other people to go into a dungeon, but you have to have the right classes, whereas in UO, you can just get up & go whenever you want for the most part.

If you are interested in reading paragraph after paragraph, looking at screen shot after screenshot or watching a video tutorial on how to defeat a boss and then spend at least 4 hours in a row at least once (for some guilds up to 7 times) a week learning a single boss in a dungeon before you can actually kill it, then UO is not the place for you. Oh yeah, and then don't forget you have to compete with other people for equipment, so even after 3 months of learning the boss, if an item drops that you need, you aren't guaranteed to get it... maybe next week, or the week after...

That kind of challenging I don't personally need, though I know many enjoy it for some reason, and they are welcome to that. It's true that most of the monsters in UO are soloable, and that's actually part of the reason UO is better than other games... it doesn't force you to be social for one, it doesn't suck up all your time, and you don't have to compete with other players for specific items you need from a monster.

As far as PvP in WoW goes, sure there's plenty of it, but it's really not very different from just loading up call of duty or battlefield or any other game like that... what I mean is that there is no risk whatsoever in WoW, and that is why people aren't afraid to PvP in it. In UO there is some risk, not nearly as much as there used to be (which is sad imo) but that is what really makes the PvP really exciting in UO. You are right that many of the pvpers have left. The majority of my former guild in UO (Black Company) moved over to WoW years ago, shortly after I did.

You called character progression in UO tedious... Honestly, what is more tedious? Raising magery from 0 - 100 in a day and then going out an traveling the world being able to defend yourself from most threats, or spending a month or more grinding up through the levels and not being able to travel where you want when you want or being able to defend yourself from most threats until you're a high level? I personally think the month+ long grind is far more tedious. And then of course when a new expansion come out, you get to grind up some more levels.

It is really sad that you think spending time reaching an endgame state in UO is tedious and pointless when it doesn't take very long to get to that point compared to WoW.

To the OP: I'm sure you already have alot of your own comparisons and don't need mine or Spiritless's opinions to make up your mind on whether you want to play UO or not. Don't let someone talk you out of experiencing a game again just because they are sour on the game and have become addicted to a pixel-crack time sink like WoW or some other similar game.
There are many of us who still enjoy UO and MANY people returning to the game lately.

Well guys thanks for the feedback. I succumbed to temptation and not only started a new account, found information on 2 of my old accounts and started those back up to see what was on them. Sadly, no houses left, but there some gold at least and I won't have to start from scratch on a character.

I did make a new character (gargoyle ninja lol) and he's in the starting area for gargoyles. I made one on Atlantic and one on Pacific. I attacked a grizzly bear and was pwnt so it's not gotten off to a great start but I will stick it out for at least a month and see how it goes.

I hope you find it entertaining! that's all you can ask for right?

I got talked into starting a character on Siege last night.... I got killed by a wolf, a greater mongbat and a pig.... Maybe I should take up crafting! ;)

One big gangbang huh? Sounds like my gargoyle is headed down that same road. Incidentally, I took my tamer (the WW I had is gone) to some rune I had labeled "WW" in hopes of taming another one but died like 20 times - not by the WW but by the damn rat mages. ONE mage...killed me 3 times lol

I can't help but think I really suck at this game haha

Hey thanks, did they take that fun out of the game? lol I seem to remember that was a good way to work up swordsmanship/fencing?

Most of Chesy doesn't RP and it makes no difference to me. I personally know that there are still malas 18x 18 spots that can be placed on. Housing isn't to bad although most of the really super prime locations have been taken. The real trouble is if your looking for a spot in a player town or near a moongate.
