Useless Newbie Skills

I remember when I was new, I ran around FOR-EV-ER trying desperately to GM my 'camping'. I can remember making campfire after campfire after campfire...I was made fun of endlessly when I made a friend who had been playing for awhile.

"Nat?"
"Yeah?"
"What in the hell are you doing?"
"Making a campfire."
"I can see you are making a campfire. What I want to know is *why* you are making one."
"So I can skill up in camping."
*pause*
"Nat, what in the hell would you possibly use camping for?"
"I don't know."
"Do you even know what it does?"
"Um. Not really, no."

Thus began the habit of me checking with trusted friends before working any skill, in any game.



Got a skill that you worked hard to gain only to realize later it either sucked, or that you couldn't use it the way you thought you could?

My first character that I ever worked was a lumberjacker. I was raising taming on her as I went around chopping trees. I had my taming up to like 55 or something ridiculous when a friend told me that you could not fit taming and all of the related skills properly on a lumberjacking template and I was crushed.

It took me something like 9 months to GM my lumberjacking. My very first toon in UO was Nataliya, and I worked so long and hard to make her a fearsome jacker warrior! (Oh, the irony).

Anyway-- she's resting right now, as I try to decide what sort of template to make her.
