Same company (EA), same studio (Bioware Mythic).

So why not make the UO client use the same engine as Dragon Age II?

UO can reuse much of the world and character art from Dragon Age, and whatever is created for UO can also be 'reused' in the next Dragon Age.

Which engine do we currently use, the one for FIFA isn't it?

The Legacy client is proprietary, the EC is Gamebryo (same as Civ 4, Oblivion, etc).

I wasn't sure if Wombat was client, server, or both. I knew it was involved, just wasn't sure exactly where.

cant/wont happen.

EVER.

UO prides itself on remaining just above a MUD from a technical standpoint.

"..our fans have stuck with us all these years while every other game has lapped us technically, and we are not about to abandon them. We will continue to support the '84 commodore 64 client and all the people who depend on it." -EA Mythic

"...we're commited to bringing games within about 85% of completion, and then abandoning them. It's an old tradition that our founding fathers held deeply and that we will continue proudly. That being said, the EC... well..." -EA

Wombat is a scripting language, and only used on the server for things like whether a monster casts a flamestrike or does a melee attack.

No. Doesn't matter how good whatever non-2D client is, most of the playerbase won't use it.

UO I think needs to stay isometric, but that doesn't mean it has to stay tethered to 1997 technology.

Besides, Ultima and 3d have not exactly had the best of relationship in the past 12 or so years what with the nightmare that was Ascension 2 3d titles that were started and canned after a LOT of PR, and at cleast a couple more behind the scenes done more as "proof of concept".

Agreed, I think a Lot of people are attracted to graphics based on a 60 degree x 120 degree iso grid

Even on other game forums, many have mentioned they like this style best. It seems extremely popular

UO will not grow as long as it has to support two clients, and even if the game is brought under a single client it needs to be quite a few levels above the current enchanced client.

In a very rare occurrence I am going to agree with HD.

That is the one ray of hope I still have that *this* game will enter the current decade. You never truly fail until you stop trying.

I do sympathize with the OP tho. It seems every modern game I play, and a few not so modern games, I imagine what it would look like if it were UO.

I do think a lot of the feel dragon age has would fit nicely into UO. It gives you a great sense of impending doom and challenges you through the story line to prepare for it. UO is lacking in that.

EC will do fine till they pull mobile phone trick. Sign up for extended plan with penalties for quiting. Get a box in the mail with new vid goggles. Point of view of the UO world. Having to have a group with a member to watch your back. A world where you never know when a critter or murder may get first strike from behind. Able to Ebolt someone and step behind a tree while they turn to see the Earth Elis already sicked on them.

Never happen till the boondocks gets a gas station so they can park their buggy and put the horse to pasture.

"...wtf... good graphics? A 20th century MMO "engine" ? EEEEWWWWW!!! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!! Gimmme my old 12th century UO client!! I *HATE* good graphics and modern UI elements! UO would be better off as a MUD!" -Stratics Posters

You know what's sad? My grandma's father was involved in WW1.. in the trenches. Him and his buddies played UO and laughed at the graphics. They had all kinds of time on their hands to screw around with in between german attacks. Nobody dared make an advance. Welcome to the stalemate of trench warfare. But my great grandpy passed the time by playing UO with his trenchmates.. and he used to tell me, "ahh we had some fun with UO... but that was a lifetime ago.. things must've changed drastically by now-- err.. wait... it doesn't look like things have changed a bit! You're using that same old client we used to use back in the trenches!" -my grandpa

"damn straight! The day that UO evolves beyond a 1993 high school graphics project client, is the DAY I QUIT UO! MAY UO LIVE IN THE DARK AGES AS IT HAS FOR THE LAST 11 years!" -everyone on stratics
