EA developing mystery MMO MMO News - Page 1 | Eurogamer.net

Or not? It's really a "UO2 MIGHT be in development!

EA's Redwood Shores HQ is working on an as yet unannounced MMO title, according to a new job listing.

A recruitment call that recently popped up on Gamasutra states that the publisher is looking for an MMO Web Architect to work on the title.

No further details are explicitly offered as to what the game might be but judging by the accompanying blurb it seems EA is setting its sights high.

"Let's be clear. We're not looking for just anybody. We're looking for a web ninja that is well-versed in all web technologies and has extensive experience scaling server-side systems.

"If web technologies were made up on 5 key building blocks (components, data tier, business tier, presentation, integration), you would be Voltron – Defender of the Web Universe.

"What we have in store is a challenge for you," the post continued. "It will be huge. It will be monumental and the technical challenges from the size, volume, and touch points will be awesome.

"You'll love it and be eager to get to work each day. You'll get to try out new technologies, build things on the cloud and work on systems that touch the boundaries of both the game systems and web services layers."

EA's Redwood Shores currently house a number of internal studios including The Sims team and Dead Space developer Visceral Games.

The EA MMO that we do know about – the BioWare-developed Star Wars: The Old Republic – is due for launch in the second half of the year.

If EA comes out with a badass game you will buy it, you will play it, and you will happily pay for it monthly if asked.

You play DragonAge? DeadSpace? Madden? BattleField? Crysis? Fight Night? Tiger Woods PGA? MassEffect? Lord of the Rings(Strategy not MMO)?

Fact is EA publishes alot of great, amazing even, games. If they come out with one that suits your fancy you'll be all over it just like you would if LB walked in the room and said he was here to save you.

Since it's Redwood, more than likely they are wanting to really expand the Sims onto Facebook or the web in general, since they have already made a huge push on the iPhone/iPad and have branched out with Sims Medieval. Plus there is a Sims movie supposedly coming out next year.

A full Sims MMO on Facebook would be insanely popular. The Sims Online was 10 years too early and lacking Facebook. I'm actually surprised they haven't done it before now. Facebook and a Sims MMO would lead me to pretty much stop checking Facebook every now and then. I hated all of the Farmville/Cityville chat as it was among people I knew, even after I turned off updates, etc.

It is indeed a SOE :) but how funny would it be if EA somehow bought the rights to make a next gen EQ before a next gen UO? Hehe, that's what was on my mind ;P. It would be as weird as Sega making games for Nintendo :).

The Eurogamer article contains a link to this Gamasutra job offering:

And the Gamasutra job post contains the link to the official EA application form:

Which says explicitely:

The studio that brought you The SimsTM is looking for Web Engineers to help build a new experience in The Sims legacy.

But didn't the Sims online already fail? I never played it but from what I heard it was basically just a bunch of body slams and cyber sex (for some reason they had a piledriver or some sort of professional wrestling animation that you could do to anyone you wanted, from what I recall). And Second Life pretty much covers everything the Sims online could ever do, if Second Life is still running.

I was one of the beta testers for sims online. During the beta there wasn't much problem with cyber sex or body slams. It was mainly people getting together to socialize and play mini games to earn credits to upgrade their homes. It was a neat concept, and I enjoyed it during the beta, but once it went live I decided not to continue playing. To me it felt like a gloried chat room, and I wasn't about to pay for that. I doubt we'll ever see another incarnation of sims online.

I think in the grand scheme it was some sort of grand social experiment that just happened to make some people a bit of money for a short while.

secondlife still turns over $1,000,000 a day and growing. Its the Sims on crack. Not only does it cover all the same things as the Sims, it adds on 50x more.

I haven't played Secondlife since the FBI shut down the casinos in game, but I still keep an eye on it.

I wish we could get DEV's from SIMS on UO. Start working on fixing art... Let me design my character like they do in the SIMS... That would be cool.

Facebook, iPhone/iPad, and mobile connectivity wasn't around for TSO like they are these days. A web-based Sims could be played anywhere - iPhone, iPad, Android, etc. and combine with the obsessive-compulsive types on Facebook and you have a license to print money. Like I said, Sims Online was about 10 years too early and lacking Facebook.
And Second Life pretty much covers everything the Sims online could ever do, if Second Life is still running.
It is still running, but things aren't looking too hot. Linden Labs had to lay off a lot of people. Because of the economy and budgets, a lot of companies and educational institutions are either pulling out or looking at open-source alternatives, and on top of that, they put in some changes that really screwed over educational customers, and it had to have been done deliberately. As of a month or two ago, they do have the former head of EA's Sims unit as their CEO, which is kind of funny. They also have a lot of people complaining about teenagers. Sounds like UO

ArcheAge isn't being hyped at all, why would you think that? Also if you mean fail games like Darkfall and Mortal they SAID they built their games based on UO. Archeage never claimed that. But their homes, plants, house vendors ect mimi UO exactly, but then go more into depth.

Also, who said anything about Portalarium? So because he owns a company that does facebook games you think his other company that's going to work on the new MMO is crap? Actually, hopefully it's like UO, but it's Dragon Age Online. That would rock. :)

If anyone likes UO you'll probably like the original single player Dragon Age. It's an amazing game. Need a good computer to run it though :/. But because of that, the game looks amazing. And the character builder is incredible. It's a 3D isometric RPG in which your char levels and you acquire items specific to your char, like Diablo. But then it's a (cpu) party game, so you acquire teammates too as you go along, and you micromanage everyone in real time during battle sequences. The game is rather open-ended so you don't always have to defeat A before B (but you usually have to due to the level of difficulty B represents) which is also neat, but the twist to Dragon Age is relationships with your teammates. The in-game politics are incredible, so you can lose one teammate (say a chivalry dexxer) if you are too nice to another (say a necro), because their viewpoints are so different. So at times the way you finish a level will depend on who fights and who leaves, but if you are careful with your choices you can keep everyone relatively happy :).

really? you're going to rely on mmorpgs hpyed list? Everyone knows that means nothing. As you mentioned Rift... Remember the drama around the hype rating on that? lol.

Yeah Garriott did Rasa, but do you forget they scrapped the first Rasa and made the second one? first one was going to be more his style, but he had to change it.

So because he made a nonUO game you think when he says "I'm going back to my roots" and "bringing Lord British back in a new game" you assume he means in a WoW setting?

EA is known for it's sports game, and 6 sports games is more than one use to be sandbox game. If you can lose all hope in Garriott because he made rasa and ignore all the Ultimas, and claim he will make a nother WoW clone. then why can't I use that as a leg to stand on with 6v1 with EA?

either way, if you depend on a "hype" system that even mmorpg admitted was not working, and because Garriott worked on a nonUO project therefore you assume he's a liar. Nothing I say will make you understand how silly you sound.

The thing people are missing is that the current "social media" games on Facebook and elsewhere are not where that is going to end. It's new and been used on a very small scale.

What people like about it is that it's got no barriers. You go somewhere (like Facebook) and you can instantly play one of these games, streamed to you. There's no downloads, no discs, nothing in your way. Instant play.

The tech isn't there yet, and maybe not the infrastructure. I'm not an expert on it. But I can see that a full scale MMORPG like any of them on the market now, delivered by streaming video, with no barriers, offers some really big benefits.

  • Instant access, as said. Want to try a free trial? Just try it out...right now.
  • Word of mouth? Try it...right now. All you need is a link.
  • Huge game? Long download time? CDs? Nope, it can be any size that money to make allows, and you can play it ...right now.
  • Huge battles with thousands of players in one place at the same time? I don't know, but the limits are not on the gamers comp. They're on the game's systems and the internet's capabilities. I think there's a big difference here, and it'll get bigger.
  • Dupes? I don't think so.
  • Scripts that read what is sent to the player to react to? I think this may be made impossible, not sure.

I could be wrong, of course. But I think this is the idea. Not only for Facebook like games of today, but a much bigger future for games we play. I think the biggest problem will be what the internet providers will be capable of handling. And that's getting close, with laser technology and other new developments. Right now, I think everyone's trying to get their foot in the door for a big explosion that is coming. It's where the future is going.

Just my opinion.

This is a very expensive part of the problem though if you get into complex games, and not many companies want to tackle it, otherwise we'd see more MMOs attempting to have just one universe rather than splitting players up across multiple shards/servers.

EVE Online has been fighting the technical problems of all players sharing one universe from the beginning and they still run into serious issues when thousands of spaceships start fighting it out. They are getting better at it and better and cheaper networking hardware is helping them out, but it's still a problem, and they just keep adding more and more players, plus they have another MMO that is going to be contained within EVE Online that is launching next year.

It is also very taxing on gamers internet connections. Internet connections should be getting better, but see my point below.

I think the biggest problem will be what the internet providers will be capable of handling.
The biggest problem for gamers is what the internet providers will allow us to do and play. Right now in Canada and the US, major ISPs are putting limits in place that are going to seriously restrict what people do.

They claim to be going after "power" users, but the normal users of today will be tomorrow's "power" user in their eyes unless they are willing to increase the bandwidth caps every year as more people do more stuff online. My guess is they are working up to offering special add-on packages for people who watch Netflix or people who game a lot. They'll probably charge $20 or $30 a month for a gamer's package and any downloads/bandwidth associated with gaming won't count against your overall cap and it could have a better ping or some other advantages they could work in. Same with some kind of movie package, where you pay an extra $20 or so and your Netflix and iTunes streaming won't count against your overall cap.

They've been trying to figure out how to nickel-and-dime us on the internet side and get a piece of the gaming and internet video pie and how they can implement the same types of packages they have on the TV side, and they've finally started figuring it out.

Guess you missed this whole part of the article:
Portalarium is dedicated to social gaming. An grand era of gaming that also is marked by low cost or free titles, he said.

"Single player, multiplayer, with each of these eras the market has gone up dramatically," he said. "Social media games are about to pass a threshold to the hundreds of millions of players

Or the fact that its been stated more than once in multiple places on his facebook that the game you are referring to is Lord Brits New Britannia. Which has also been stated in multiple places to be a social network game.

Its cool Derium, I'll wait . Rage more kiddo. Still waiting on this link to some "other company"

And yes I'll use MMORPG's hype list. Broke or not, if you want to say a game right up there with Rift and Guildwars2 is not hyped your nuts. ArcheAge has been hyped in multiple other places as well. I've got a doc appt to get too. I'll shove links down your throat when I get back.

:coco:
I've seen zero commercials for the game, and never actually heard about it outside of mmorpg. Hard to Hype a game when they are not spending money on marketing it hardcore.

As for Garriott, seperate yourself from his next work with Portalarium and listen to what he said about his next company for an MMO. I'll settle it this way... Ask him for yourself.

Yeah, I know what you mean on the internet provider business. I don't know where that's going to end up. But the demand will be there. I think we'll start hitting some bumps in the road soon, everywhere just like Canada, though.

In my mind, as far as streaming video, if we get a video full of changing colors, that's no different than getting one full of characters running around in a lush environment. I don't know what this means as far as the possibilities for gaming, entirely. I just think that it'll have a lot of promise. There would obviously be a greater need for expensive hardware on the game company's end, if they were to make this in a massive world with all the frills. I think it'd be worth it though, on both ends.

So I guess all the news on sites like Massively, MMOSite, MMOFront, and the already dedicated fan sites like ArcheAge Source, and ArcheAge Online are just in my imagination. ok.

As for Garriott, seperate yourself from his next work with Portalarium and listen to what he said about his next company for an MMO. I'll settle it this way... Ask him for yourself.
That would be easy to do except there is not talk of another company. Anywhere. Period. And there are only two games anywhere that are talked about. One: a game that goes along with some Television show hosted by Garriot, and the Second: Lord Brits New Britannia which is most definitely going to be a Social Network game.

See Derium, I do my research. And though I might not put it all out there in the post. I hold my cards back so when people come spitting off at the handle I already have my answers waiting. I read that article, and many other articles when this was first posted. And I've somewhat kept an eye on Garriott's plans.

So you tell me Derium....where is this "other company" and where is this new MMO that he will be making with said company?

It's in your head.
