UO Thief Turns 600 \0/

~ News ~
As of today, UO Thief is now host to 600+ total episodes from nearly different thieves across 12 different shards. In 5 1/2 years of existence, these episodes have attracted over 250,000 page views per year. These 600+ episodes can be found in these two sections:

~ Site History ~
Launching on September 1, 2006, I was looking for a place to properly host my original 22 episodes and thus, www.uothief.com was born. Up until that point they were posted on a really cheap free forum (the same forum that I still use today). For the first 3 years, the site doubled as a guild website and a place to host odd UO related side projects. Today, all the fat has been cut and the site exists solely as a place to host UO related stories & information for thieves, by thieves. (This information includes The Thief Forum FAQ.) There are still traces of it being a "guild website," but for the most part it's open to any thief of any guild on any shard.

(As far as the THIEF guild goes, there are still a few heroes out there, flying the THIEF flag, but it has died down a little (leaving room for other thieves to make their marks). Besides Shinobi's guild, cRaZyPoO, there haven't been any other active thief guilds with high membership counts for years. As far as I know, it's only been the two of us running things for a long time. Rico was still very active the entire time I was playing, but I don't think he recruited too many people. In fact, I think a lot of people from S|S, GOR, LuT, Army of Thieves, and a lot of these older thief guilds moved on to do other things just as my guild was starting up.)

~ Guild History ~
Although I've played a thief since T2A, it was only in January 2006 when I retired my PvP mage and did the same with my carpenter and began playing my thief full-time. Beginning as an upstart thief wanting to make a guild, roughly 70 people joined me on Napa Valley at one time or another, with membership as high as 30 people at one time. It was only in February 2008 when Jose Muerto & Bill Brasky contacted me as fans and they formed the 2nd chapter of THIEF on Great Lakes. Soon after in July 2008, Tony Emerald contacted me and formed the 3rd chapter of THIEF on Atlantic. And it's at this time where I shut down everything on Napa Valley and shipped everything across the pond to form the 4th chapter of THIEF on Siege Perilous in July of 2008... but it wouldn't stop there.

  • In August 2008, Nexus contacted me and formed the 5th chapter of THIEF on Chesapeake.
  • After 6 months on Chesapeake, in January 2009, Nexus came to me with an idea and we struck a bargain: With me on Siege Perilous (with no intentions of ever playing on production shards ever again), it was decided that he would be the one to spread THIEF from shard to shard on a World Tour. He would Character Transfer to a shard, establish a guild stone, recruit members, hand the guild over to someone capable & willing, and then transfer to the next--continuing to steal and post stories all along the way. And I told him that if he began this project and dedicated at least 100 episodes to the cause, I would permanently display the World Tour on a stand alone section on the site. From Chesapeake, with a brief stop on Atlantic, he made Legends his first target... This would be the first of three attempts to impregnate Legends with THIEF.
  • In early 2008, THIEF on Legends was first attempted by Rikimaru. Plans fell through, the guild never really got off the ground, and Rikimaru gave up the cause (although he later re-joined the guild on Atlantic and Siege Perilous). In February 2009, Nexus lands on Legends for the second attempt and it doesn't work out. And shortly after that, Lita contacts me with similar plans, but other than a few solo steals it all never fully materialized. (He also later re-joined the guild on Siege Perilous.)
  • Soon after these unsuccessful (but valiant) attempts to form a THIEF presence on Legends, Tony Emerald packs it up on Atlantic and forms the 6th chapter of THIEF on Europa and Rikimaru takes over the guild on Atlantic.
  • In January 2012, after nearly 2 years of inactivity, Johnny Hooker resurrects the guild and founds the 7th chapter of THIEF on Catskills as part a new thief alliance along with Francois Villon ([L^C] The Legion Of Chaos) and The Collector ([T.B] Thieves Of Britannia).
Through it all, it was this time between July 2008 to January 2010 which I consider to be the golden era of THIEF. Imagine four active guilds of thieves operating simultaneously on Great Lakes, Atlantic/Europa, Siege Perilous, and Chesapeake all operating under one flag, because that's what we had going. I was doing my own thing on Siege Perilous, but the others held their own, recruited their own people, and told their own stories on their respective shards--and it's this idea that was the key.

I've always said that it was the stories that made a THIEF guild "THIEF" (as opposed to yet another random thief guild that happened to have the same name). I've (also) said that the thing that thieves hate the most is other people telling them what they can't do. I took my own advice to heart and gave everyone else a free hand to do what they wished and it was only a loose association through stories (and occasional visiting) that held all four guilds together.

As far as Siege Perilous goes, in the year-and-a-half I spent there I guilded nearly 60 members at one time or another. While I enjoyed my time on Napa Valley, it just doesn't compare to the fun I had on Siege Perilous. I had only been training for about a week before I began recording my stories again. With two skills in the low 80's (Hiding & Snooping) and everything else 50 or below, instead of being a hermit--afraid to go outside--I let my skill gain through ROT be part of the story. I was stealing while I was training.

It was also during my time on Siege Perilous that the player town of Barter Town was born:

Through continued stories by members and myself--often times featuring Barter Town--in the year of 2009 we were recruiting more people to Siege Perilous than anyone else, including NEW. I make this statement based on (the few) guild membership reports of NEW made by Shalimar versus our own sightings of fresh faces around town. I saw and talked to an average of 2 people every week who were brand new to the shard. These people were just poking their faces around town or working in the mines wearing hats. In fact, if you take the 50 or so THIEF members not originally from Siege and add that to 2 Visitors x 75 Weeks on Siege, I don't think it's unreasonable to conclude that in a year-and-a-half, through Barter Town, we attracted hundreds of people to Siege Perilous.

~ Guest Content ~
I may not play UO anymore but I still maintain the site. If there any thieves out there that want their exploits to be read by (potentially) tens-of-thousands of people (over the next few decades), let me know. In the meantime, please check out everyone else's websites:

Speaking of Guest Episodes, recently, most notably are the following guests:

I hope you enjoyed my story.

Looks like a bunch of good stuff. Thanks for the pointer to peruse. I never got around to playing a thief in UO but I sure enjoyed the Swords series of books by Fritz Leiber. Maybe I'll play around with it enough to come up with something.

Anyone know what ever became of Slappy McHappy? He was a thorn in my side for half a year on GL. :)

Thanks for reading but wow... I'm getting my THIEF history crossed up. Edited to include information about the World Tour and Legends.

I was about to say the name sounds familiar, but I'm thinking of Squirrel Pope. And I think that guy was on Atlantic.

I'm not sure but I think he may have been the same guy that played Ronald McDonald on GL as well.

By the by, about this time last year a very small group of folks I know were wondering about the possibility of moving off our regular shard to go and do stuff really just for fun. Get away from some of the drama that was breaking out where we were at the time. Anyway, among other shards I mentioned I had just enough to start with on LA and one of the guys said, "Oh no, we don't want to go there. That's where Chad lives."

*chuckles* I understand that a bit more clearly now.

On behalf of all the people that didn't want to be part of your posted "views", on behalf of all the people that don't think its fun that you stand around taunting them after the stealing, on behalf of all the people that tryed to make a start on another shard to be griefed off that same shard, on behalf of people that lost there one of a kind event item thats nothing more than another notch cut on the staff of stealing, on behalf of people that live and STAY on a shard that you only log into during a event, on behalf of those that cannot stomach being a thief because taking something from another person is just that..."STEALING", on behalf of those that understand stealing pixels is still moralisticly stealing (and not justify it simply by saying "Its only a game")....

Absolute fail on the scale of times 600!

A Thief is a Thief... Stealing is Stealing... taking something from someone reguardless of a game or not doesn't justify the action. When you steal FROM ANOTHER PERSON the game excuse goes out the window.

We need thieves to make the game more fun, but bragging about it in open forum is lacking in taste... Keep your bragging somewhere its acceptable.
